For the benefit of list members who are not familiar with the particulars of the Journal. Davis Douthit was my gr-gr-grandfather. Douthitts were in Daviess County by 1826 when Davis' parents James Douthitt and Elizabeth Barnett were married. My mother was born in 1914 in the house that they built. The property still belongs to a family member and the house is still standing but not lived in. It is in eastern Daviess Co . If you have a good map follow Hwy 144 to Knottsville and look for Scythia , that is the place. The journal was a daily memoranda kept from 1855-1859. The back pages are in bad shape and I won't be able to get all of that. I have tried to identify every one that Davis mentions. So far most have been found either in census records of Daviess and Hancock County and in the History of Daviess County They were all living in the same area from Yelvington , Spice Knob and Knottsville on over into Hancock County and were either relatives or neighbors. Samuel W Allen was a close neighbor to the Douthitt's. I checked the Daviess Cemetery Volumes but couldn't find any burial information for his family. The children living in 1850 were also in the 1860 census. The youngest child then was 6 so the child that died was probably just a baby. Douthitts were buried at Mt Zion near Ensor and at the Winkler cemetery across the road from Mt Zion. I can provide the complete file of the Journal to date for any one who may want or need it. I can also scan a page occasionally and send it as an attached jpeg file to any one interested in trying to read his handwriting.
