Content-Type: text/plain; charset="Windows-1252" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit I have a letter dated May 13, 1847, from a son (Alex J. Bourgoin) to his father, Joseph Bourgoin. Alex says he is writing from Bon harbor and father lives in Cincinnati. Alex says he is sick with dysentery and is leaving this place, so father should direct replies to Owensboro, Kentucky. I am unsuccessful in locating any place called Bon harbor. Alex's handwriting is very precise, so I do not think he means Bar Harbor. I have tried the 1895 atlas site for locations along the Ohio/Mississippi river and have tried USGS GNIS with no joy. Any ideas? SSDI UPDATE WITH NEW "MIDDLE NAME/INITIAL" DATA. Due to the resolution of a mix-up at the supplier end with an Ancestry.com and RootsWeb.com standing order, our Web sites are once again posting monthly updates to the Social Security Death Index after a brief interruption. The new SSDI update, current to September 2001, contains roughly 500,000 more entries than the version it replaces, bringing the grand total close to 66.7 million names. The new database is also notable in that it contains new fields: middle names and name suffixes. In fact, the new file contains middle name information on some 21 million people, almost one-third of the entire index. The vast majority of these entries are middle initials only. The benefit to genealogists is to see extra information about an ancestor that allows one to discriminate between two potential records. The updated data also contains name suffixes such as "JR" and "SR," which can be valuable in determining the identity of fathers or sons. SCIFRES was a storekeeper and miller there. If you'll remember, I wrote before because my gg-grandfather, William C. SCIFRES, son of David, and Davis DOUTHITT's first cousin, James Harvey DOUTHITT, were proprietors of DeGonia Springs Resort in Warrick Co., IN in the late 1880's. These families probably knew each other back as early as 1857, according to this entry! Come to think of it--David SCIFRES' 2nd wife was Delila MCDANIEL, d/o Joseph MCDANIEL. Don't know enough about the MCDANIEL line but I would be willing to bet that Davis' friend, Reason MCDANIEL, was somehow related. Don't know why I hadn't thought of that before! The SCIFRES/MCDANIEL marriage was 15 Oct 1824, 177 years ago today. Thanks again for continuing to post these journal entries! This sort of information adds much more to the picture than just barebones dates and places. Regards, Terri McDonald Hauk thauk@home.com

Since they had to be carded I'm guessing now that it was wool from his sheep. Who knew wool was such a big part of their life? I thought they kept sheep because they taste so good BBQed !
