    3. Hi, Patrick and I have the same Roberts, but he is the best researcher by far! Please give me some dates and I'll look in the Daviess Co. census 1850-1870-1880 for them. There is a Little Flock Church Cem. in Daviess Co., near the McLean Co. line. Seems yours is a different line of Robards/Roberts.

    1. [KYDAVIES-L] 1800 Ohio Co Census
    2. Nena Smothers
    3. Hello, can anyone tell me who this Jacob and John are in the 1800 Ohio Co census?? Its a Tax List and no township listed for any of them. Odd thing is there are 2 listings with different KYS1a numbers for John and for James. I don't understand ... why are they listed twice?? I also have James and William and I believe those to be my Wm and his brother James Smeathers... Not a clue who John is..its not Wm's son, we have him b abt 1790 and he would only be 10y old. Someone once said they though the Jacob was our Archibald Jacob but no way, he was not b until 1795... I sure wish I could figure this out...stumped again! thanks, NSmothers "Life ain't in holding a good hand, but playing a good hand well." 3. Oh, you have run upon some interesting problems. James Adams and his wife Margaret were associated through several deeds in Jefferson and Nelson Cos, with Benjamin (1841-aft 1810) and Ann Duncan Roberts and Charles (d 1820 Daviess Co.) and Mary (Roberts???) Duncan (NOTE: Charles and Ann are at best cousins, if not more distantly related, they are absolutely NOT brother and sister, Benjamin and Mary may be brother and sister, which would explain a lot, but nobody can prove it!). Charles and Mary Duncan were the parents of Benjamin Duncan (abt 1767-1824) who was the administrator of this estate. Now here is the wierd part. John D. Bates (1800-aft 1860), who may or may not be related to James Bates was married to a woman named Eliza Duncan (d. bef 1847) in 1828 in Daviess Co. Eliza Duncan was the daughter of a couple of enigmas named John (d abt 1847) and Nancy Miller Duncan. Although this John Duncan appears to hang out with the same crowd as the Charles Duncan family and the Roberts family in Daviess Co., he just doesn't fit into the puzzle. He is not the son of Charles and Mary Duncan, nor does he work as a grandson or any other descendant. Now, John D. and Eliza Duncan Bates had 3 children, the eldest was apparently Samuel D. Bates. Samuel Duncan (1764-1844, went to Missouri) was Charles and Mary Duncans second sons name (the eldest was John Duncan (1856-1830 stayed in Nelson Co), of course). The other two sons of John D. and Eliza Duncan Bates were William A. and Benjamin H. (both very common Roberts names... for your own sanity, never try to research any Roberts named Benjamin or William... or John for that matter). To make life even more interesting, I am descended from a whole mess of these people (Roberts/Duncan) who apparently intermarried like they were the only people living in the area! If you can figure out these connections, please let me know. So now to my question(s)... 1. What was John D. Bates middle name? Duncan?????? 2. Was John D. Bates a son of James Bates? 3. Were the Bates family from Culpeper Co., VA?? 4. Who is John Duncan (d. abt 1847)? 5. Who are William Roberts (1777-1846, married Margaret Odle), Henry M. Roberts (1782-1856, married 1. Ann Duncan granddaughter of Charles and Mary Duncan and 2. Elizabeth B. Duncan, daughter of John and Nancy Miller Duncan!), Willis Roberts (1786-1841, married 1. Rosanna Duncan, granddaughter of Charles and Mary Duncan and 2. Nancy Walker) and Wesley Roberts(1790-1862, married to Mary Ann Smeathers) Roberts, all early settlers of Daviess Co., and likely somehow related to my branch, and all connected to this mess one way or another??? I'm sure I can think of some others given time... 1. [KYDAVIES-L] DAR Lookups
    2. FORWARDED WITH PERMISSION... Dear All: Some volunteers from the society of the Daughters of the American Revolution ( DAR) have established a wonderful new program for users of Rootsweb. These volunteers will do lookups in their database and records if you think one of your ancestors served in some capacity during the American Revolution. These volunteers have more databases that are available to them than the ones commonly used by the search engines. The process is fairly simple : Go to the DAR message board: There are two ways to do that: > www.rootsweb.com > message boards > topics > organizations and societies > DAR Or if you want the easy way :-) http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=topics.organizations.dar Address your message as follows: subject: DAR Lookup > surname> location > dates In the body of the message put the information regarding the person, Be sure to fill out the surnames box at the bottom since the new search engine will be keying on that item. Leave the email response box checked and you will be notified when the DAR volunteers respond. Give them a week or so to get to your request. We really appreciate their efforts. This info can be key for: a: joining these prestigious organizations ( DAR & SAR) b: sending a request for the copies of the files that were submitted and the information they have available. Many thanks to: Glenda Thompson DAR VIS Volunteer Vice Chrm. Patriot Lookup for organizing this effort and all the many volunteers that are donating their time and effort to us instead of pursuing their own ancestors, Best Regards John A Hansen DAR board admin. BTW: Please forward this message to other lists and boards that each of you are involved in. A word of thanks to each volunteer that does this work and especially the one that responds to your post would probably be highly appreciated.

    2. Nena Smothers
    3. Dodie-As Bob Norris said earlier, this is my lucky day! He happened to be going to Hartford this am and was going to ck up on the info I was searching. I live in Wa state. Now on Valentine "Felty" Husk...no doubt he was my gggg grandfather's best friend. I run across his name intertwined all the time with Smeathers. I know they both came from 'somewhere' in Va...maybe the Holston River area, or Wash Co, but somewhere where they knew each other and were together and went to Ky. Have you seen this at all..its from the Owensboro Daviess Co Ky History "the first settlers were William Smeathers at Yellowbanks, now Owensoboro, in 1797 and Valentine Husk. There were Indian trails here inc the Elizabethtown-Shawneetown Trail." pg 797 says "he lived in Yellowbanks [where my gggg grandfather did too] a few yrs then moved to Daviess Co at a point on the Ohio river at the mouth of Pup Creek. He had a family of 8 children. Came to Ky fr Va an d 1826. His wife was Elizabeth Hacker, dau of Wm Hacker who came to the co abt the same time and was a soldier in the Rev War. Hacker fought at Braddock's defeat and was personally acquainted with Geo Washington. He was a member of the Va Blues, Washington's command. A note by a Mrs. Emma D. Mastins: "I have a memorandum that Valentine Husk is buried on the Frank Duncan Farm in Daviess Co near the Old Camp Group." This info provided to me by another descendant of Valentine Husk-Gloria Powers Husk of Carrabelle, Fl. http://www.gloryway.com http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/h/u/s/Gloria-J-Husk I had searched for descendants of Valentine to try to figure out exactly where he came fr in Va. Gloria did not know for sure. But she listed his 8 children: George m Charlotte Kelley d/o Garrett Kelley; James m Cynthia Lancaster, Frank, Mary Catherine m Wm Helm, Valentine W[Wm James] sr m 1)unk 2)Malinda Kelley Kellam; Washington, Deliah m Wm Gabbert; Elizabeth m James Kellam. I am sure she would be pleased to correspond with you gjhusk@gloryway.com I also have another descendant-searching for info-Berniece Lemmons blemmons@ionet.net Valentine was her ggg grandfather She did not know for sure where Valentine was born or fr in Va either. Maybe I will be lucky and YOU will know...smile!! The only discrepancy I find is Gloria says he was b 1740-1750 and Berniece say 1775. I don't have a clue unless I go by the 1810 census. I did find them both on the 1810 Census for Ohio Co Ky along with other pals I have found them with: John and Wm Huston, Thomas Posey, Anthony Thompson [who was the JP for the county], Gabriel and Mason Jones, Eli Bell, John Duncan, Joshua Griffiths and my Wm Smeathers brother, James Smeathers [except its spelled Smethers-both of them, but its them]. Now on this census it says Valentine was checked in the 26-45 range, big range so guess that gives him a dob fr 1765-1784, which really makes more sense than 1740-50, as we believe our Wm was b around 1763-67. Valentine d 1826 and our Wm went to Tx in 1820 and d in 1837 at 71y so the newspaper obit said...does this help, hope you know where he was born...thanks, Nena From: BDCamp6900@aol.com Date: Wed, 14 Nov 2001 10:00:01 EST Hi NenaI just read your email about your grandfather WM Smeathers and a James Gentry. 3. I have a question if anyone know. My gggg grandfather Wm Smeathers had a friend name James Gentry he played jokes on a lot. I am wondering if anyone knows which one of these might have been him?? thanks, Nena 1. James b.1767/1768 Louisa Co., Vir d.1833 Winchester Co., Kentucky (family#10) 2. James b,1782 Albemarle Co., Vir d.1809 Madison Co., Kentucky Both had a wife named Elizabeth. One was Elizabeth Lyons the other was just Elizabeth. Both had several children. James Gentry was with my gggg grandfather, Wm Smeathers in the Ky Cornstalk Militia in abt 1794...do you have anything on him? In the book Law of the Heart written by Dorothy Gentry [which I have another question on], he is mentioned on pg 148...which says, "Abt 5yrs ago, 1808 to be exact James Gentry and I joined the Cornstalk Militia. Gentry was an Ensign, same as me. I must go see abt him as soon as I get Felty [Valentine] Husk to go with as I may need some protection!...Bill laughed...yeah, that trip that me and Husk played on Gentry when he was scouting acorns for his hogs has never been mentioned since but I will remember the look on his face as long as I live..ha ha!" I have this story what my Bill and his pal Felty did to Gentry. Just from what I have read I guess my grandfather xxxx was well known for playing jokes on his friends! I am wondering if Dorothy Gentry was a Gentry by marriage or if Gentry was her maiden name. I had asked her some questions when I wrote to her in Hartford where she still lives, and she wrote me back in 2000 and said she was 80 yrs old and her husband had died and she had retired from being a newspaper editor of the local newspaper in Harford, I assume. So she never answered my questions except to say she was not kin to the Smeathers. But my Wm Smeathers dau, Betsy Smeathers m John Berry and his 2nd wife Nancy Frazier [Gentry] was widow of Wm Gentry, son of Raleigh Gentry. So I have always been real curious if Dorothy was kin to this Raleigh Gentry line. I can't figure out why she wrote a book on my gggg grandfather if she had no relation to anyone in the book. Then I wonder where she got all the info she has in the book. Much of it she does claim came from the Thomas McCreery story he wrote of my grandfather in 1866 in the Life and Time of William Smothers. If anyone knows info please email me, I would also like to know what newspaper in Hartford she might have been the editor of, there is an article they printed on Wm Smeathers I would like to get a copy of, thanks so much. 1. [KYDAVIES-L] Big Thanks
    2. Joyce & Jim Kelly
    3. I am leaving the list now as my family only paused in your area. I thank all the fine list members who helped me locate Bon Harbor and provided some history and identification of local leaders in the late 1800's. Best wishes to you all. Jim Kelly Austin, Texas
