Thanks to all who answered my query about the Owensboro name. Now I know, thanks to one of you, that there is an actual place named Owensburg in Shelby County, KY although it is hard to find. I also know by doing a Google search that there are several websites that have made the mistake of listing Owensburg as the town name when they really mean Owensboro. I still don't know for sure where my grandfather was from, but this doesn't rule out Owensboro. There don't appear to be any possible candidates for him in Shelby County based on the 1880 census and there is a possible candidate in Daviess County. Hope I have not confused anyone. Hello, to the lists... One of my gr-gr-grandmothers was Elizabeth McGREW, b. abt. 1824, in Kentucky; m. John CLARK, abt. 1842, in Kentucky; had 10 children, among whom was my gr-grandfather, Elijah CLARK, b. in Grayson, KY in 1853. Elijah moved from Hawesville, KY to Warrick County (Boonville), IN, sometime in the 1870s, and married Martha Jean WILLIS, daughter of Alexander WILLIS and Elizabeth ROUGH, both originally from Rowan County, NC. Back to the beginning - Elizabeth McGREW was the daughter of Reid McGREW and Mary (?). The parents of Reid and Mary McGREW are all "brick walls" for me - any help on any of these lines would be greatly appreciated. Cookie, in Florida < GreystokeB@aol.com >

KY Birth and Death Records from 1911-2000, and marriages from 1973-2000 are indexed online at http://www.vitalsearch-ca.com/gen/ky/ky_.htm. The site is difficult to use at best. I recommend having Javascript turned off, because of the numerous popups they will send at you. On the left hand side of the page, scroll down until you see "For Kentucky Specific Data", and select the type of records you are looking for. After you click goto, another page will come up... Click on the "here" in "All Searchers may enter here." Then on the next page down in the right hand corner of the screen at the bottom it will say "Begin Search/Reset", click on that. That will give you the form to fill out for a search. The form uses the county codes that the state made up, so for County of Birth, if you are looking for Daviess, you will need to enter "daves", for Hancock: "hanck" and for Jefferson: "jeffn", etc. Good luck, you might need it! My father's birth certificate says his father (my grandfather) was born in Owensburg, KY. I am currently assuming that it is a misspelling of Owensboro, but I just wanted to determine if Owensboro was ever Owensburg. I don't find any place in Ky named Owensburg. I lived in my gg great grandfathers house his slaves built in 1856. It had both sleepers and sills under the 4'' white poplar flooring . The 'sleepers' were 20 ft. hewed logs [2 sides of these logs was shaved down flat]. One flat side of the log rested on large sand rocks.[ 4 sand rocks under each log]. The sills were the same size logs , hewed flat on all four sides, the sills rested on the sleepers, and the floor was nailed to the top side of the sills.
> > By the way, what is hew sleepers and sills? > > January-February 1858 > > Fri 5> > I helped James Richmond hew sleepers and sills > > Sa 6> > I helped Allen and Richmond lay the foundations of their houses > -- He is helping James Richmond and Samuel Allen build new houses. I'm not sure why they would do it in the winter except that they would have less other farmwork to keep up with. According to Webster "hew" is to make or shape with blows of an ax. I don't know the function of sleepers in terms of a log cabin. Maybe some of the carpenters on the list can fill us in. Sills I.m guessing would be door & window sills. When you think about it it is pretty amazing. My husband has a fortune in power tools and if I want a shelf I go buy it. . These men are building houses with hand tools and trees. Carol.
Johnny Thank you for sharing. I look forward to reading this journal. Occasionally, I see the McDaniels and my other families mentioned which really brings them to life for me. By the way, what is hew sleepers and sills?
