Does anyone know if this Eliz. Roberts is the same Elizabeth who was married to Benjamin Muffett prior to marrying Henry Roberts? I could make the assumption because of the Yelvington location. If so how is she Davis aunt? Sena, can you tell me if the Winfield Winkler that you said married Mary J. [McDaniel] is the same as my gg-grandfather, Winfield Scott Winkler, who was the Minister of Mt. Zion Church in the vicinity of Knotsville, Daviess Co., KY. I believe that Winfield Scott Winkler married Florence Ann Walters, who is buried with my grandparents, Benjamin Cleveland and Edith Catherine (Winkler) Vowels, at the Mt. Hope Cemetery, Topeka, Shawnee Co., KS. I am not aware that Winfield Scott was married prior to his marriage to Florence, but I would enjoy knowing if that might be the case. Thanks.

I want to throw out one of my brickwalls again. I'm looking for the BALSER family who lived in Owensboro, KY around 1900. Cordie BALSER was my great grandfather's sister. I do not know her husband's name. I have a picture of her sons that was sent in the early 1900's and they look to be in their teens or early twenties. Their names were: John BALSER Robert BALSER Jamey Cenus BALSER If anyone has information on this family, please let me know. I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks,
Carol, A big thank you for all of the Douthitt Journal entries which I enjoy so much, but this week's recording solved a long standing mystery for me. I finally found out when Harden McDaniel died. Harden, also known as Henson Harden and H.H., was the father of Sarah Elizabeth who married Minor Winkler and of Mary J. who married Winfield Winkler. Sarah and Minor are my great-grandparents. There are some family stories connected to Harden and his wife, Ann Caroline Payne. Caroline died on April 15, 1857 and was buried in the St. Lawrence Cemetery. I'm told that her gravestone is no longer there, but I saw it in the late 1970's. She was buried on the first row of graves next to the road. On each side of her grave there were two small stones with no inscriptions which appeared to be marking graves. I have no proof that Harden was buried at St. Lawrence, but I suspect that the two small stones may mark his grave and that of a child who appears in no other records besides the St. Lawrence Baptismal Records. The surviving children were ages 2 through 8 when Harden died in 1858. Before her death (of scarlet fever ), Caroline requested that her children be raised by her friends in the Mt. Zion community. In the 1860 and 1870 censuses, the children are with families who were members of the Mt. Zion Church. The youngest, Victoria married Edward Soper of Breckinridge County and the remainder married a member of the Mt. Zion community. Thanks again for the journal. You have the only written proof of my great-great gradfather's death. I am very, very glad that you chose to share this wonderful piece of history. I hope that others are as fortunate as I and find some of their relatives. Sena Muffett Schaefer
May 1858 Sun 23 I came home from Ohio by way of panther creek church to a funeral of S Phillips ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Mo 24 We helped William Winkler replant corn and commenced planting in the evening ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Tue 25 I had to stay with Harden McDaniel until he died ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Wed 26 I went to Knottsville after a coffin and helped bury Harden ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Thu 27 We helped William Winkler plant corn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Fri 28 I worked the road it rained a hard rain ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Sat 29 We went a fishing caught 1( or 7 ) fish ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Davis's grandmother was Mary "Polly" Phillips who married W J Black. I have several S. Phillips in my files but none who died in May 1858. the closest is Soloman her brother who died in Jan 1858. I couldn't find a burial for Hardin in my books but the "History of Daviess Co" says that Hardin's son was an elder at Mt Zion so the chances are good that that is where he is buried.
May 1858 Sun 16 We went to J W Barnett in the evening ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Mo 17 We planted corn assisted by Wm Winkler J W Barnett and his wife. It commenced raining before night and made the ground wet ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Tu 18 We cleaned up ground for William Winkler ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- We 19 We helped James Richmond plant corn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Thu 20 We laid off and planted corn assisted by James Richmond and Emily Campbell We finished planting ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Frid 21 We helped Jas W Barnett plant corn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Sat 22 We helped J W Barnett plant corn finished at 2 or 3 oclock and in the evening I went to Ohio ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- J W Barnett was probably Davis's first cousin James Wesley Barnett, son of Reason Barnett & Elizabeth Douthitt. J W is listed in the Hancock Co 1860 census. A close family since # 671-674 account for J W , his mother , 2 married sisters and another Douthitt cousin living with his mother. I couldn't find a Emily Campbell in the census.
