    1. [KYDAVIES-L] Ferries across the Ohio River
    2. Dan Garrison
    3. There was indeed, a ferry, which ran across the Ohio River between Cannelton and Hawesville. I remember well traveling that way for many years as we visited family up in Breckinridge County. I remember being somewhat disappointed when the bridge was built between those areas. Oddly enough, I remember, as a child, wanting to be sure I got a small paper cup on the ferry and enjoyed the water they provided. I thought those paper cups were very special and a drink of water tasted better while "crossing the river" ! Even though I am positive that I crossed the river many times, I don't remember the ferry from Rockport area to the Owensboro area, however, I do remember the first time we traveled across the bridge from Spencer County to Owensboro. I was slightly concerned as we got into the middle of the river. It had to be the 8th wonder of the world! Now, I smile when I cross remembering the magnitude of my memory's bridge. >From all the wonderful descriptions of the area, I am getting a better picture of how the ferry crossed the Ohio down in the Newburgh area. Does anyone out there have any knowledge of ferries across the river in the mid-1800s or how one could find out about locations of ferries? Perhaps locations of river travel did not change over those years from the mid-1800s to the 1840s or so as far as crossing the river. I come from a line of river"men" who plied the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, first carrying salt and other goods down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers from Ohio state to New Orleans. Starting in the 1810 to 1820 time frame, they first went by flatboat and then gradually graduated to steamboats. A history of Vanderburgh County, IN states that another ancestor was one of the first operators of a ferry across the Green River..not sure if he crossed the Ohio River..that would have been in the 1820 to 1825 time frame. 3. I appreciate all the information everyone is passing along. I have received some wonderful information on a ferry that ran across to Indiana where the landing was called "Cypress Beach". I have been wondering for years if there was a ferry (in the 1800s) which ran from a point on the Kentucky side across the river to Yankeetown, IN. I have tried queries on the Indiana side;however, I haven't received a definitive response at this time as to points of origin on either side of the river at that time. It is possible that the points changed over the years as access was provided across the river. I have ancestors whose home was in Daviess County; however, he went across the river to Newburgh, IN, to his own tailor shop. I have been told that he, according to family stories, would spend a few weeks in Indiana and then cross into Kentucky to visit his family. However, I do know that most of his children were born in Indiana so I would suspect that they had a home there, also, on t! hat side of the river for awhile at least. From the information received last night, I believe his home would have been on the Kentucky side, across from the Alcoa plant. This would have been in the 1850s and 1860s. Thanks. Marilyn

    2. Dan Garrison
    3. I am wondering where on the Ohio River a particular ferry boat would have crossed back and forth from the Indiana and Kentucky sides of the river. I have heard that there was a ferry that crossed the river, perhaps in the 1800s and early 1900s, from a point on the Kentucky side to the Newburgh, IN, area. Or, perhaps, someone can give me an idea of an avenue to pursue to get the answer to the question. It is possible that the Kentucky side was either near the Henderson County line or over in Henderson County. Would it have been located somewhere in the Reed area? Thanks for any suggestions. 3. My Dad, Thomas Victor Howard, (1909-1943) s/o Francis Allen Howard was first cousin and good boyhood friend of Charles Kevin Howard (b. 2/25/1910) I don't remember Kevin but have heard lots of talk abt him frm aunts & uncles, 4 of whom are still living. My info on him comes frm Anna Hamilton's "Howards of Whitesville". Anna's book has some very serious errors, but I think what she has on Kevin is basically correct. What do you need to know? 3. I want to thank everyone for all of the info sent. I am going through it now and comparing to my notes. I finally located notes on 1880 census where I found Thomas. It is as follows: Daviess Co. Census 1880 Whitesville District pg. 28 Enumerated 26 Jun 1880 HH# 246 Thomas Burris age 26 Wagoner Kentucky Nancy J. 27 Kentucky John Knott 13 Brother in law Kentucky The two most likeliest connections so far are a Nancy Knott born1855 Marion Co.,Ky to James and Sarah (Davis) Knott and a Thomas G. Burris Born 1856 Taylor Co., Ky to a William and Janes S. ( Pratt) Burress My G-Grandfathers name is William Leslie Burris, b: Jan 1881 in Daviess Co. Story has it that he had at least two brothers possibly named Thomas and Ernest and that their parents died when they were young. The kids were placed in an orphanage and William was the eldest, he ran away from the orphanage at the age of 12 and made his way south to Bainbridge, Ga. where he had family. That story is all I know. Anyway THANKS everyone for the help. Katherine
