Thanks Carol for the Davis Douthitt Journal, I will miss it a lot, I looked forward to reading it every week. Bob Norris
Carol: Thanks for all the hard work you've done in order to bring us a peek into the life of Davis and many of his friends and neighbors. No small task indeed. Davis and the others were a hard working lot, and the manner in which they all traded work is admirable. Especially when we consider the environment in which they had to work at times. It has been particularly interesting since my husbands ancestors lived this same life at this same time in this same general area. It was almost as if I were reading about them. I shall miss my weekly dose of Davis. Thanks again. Pat James Searching...JAMES, WHITE, MCKINLEY, WESTERFIELD

Carol...... Thank you for all the hours you spent deciphering the journal and giving us an interesting look at life in Daviess County. It was especially interesting to me as my family lived in the county from the time it was created. Jim Winkler Descendent of Adam Winkler
I have followed Mr Douthatt's journal, and am sorry that there isn't any more to be posted. We tend to think of a journal as a privately set down collection of thoughts. This is not so much a journal as a record of accounts to be settled. A merchant would list how much he paid for coal oil, clerk's fees and pen nibs. He would also list anything owed him by customers. This is, of course, what we have been lucky enough to get a view of. Farming was Davis Douthatt's business, before he apparently branched out into masonry (all of those chimneys) and arbitration (the lawsuit mentioned recently). If you look at the images on US Genweb for the 1840 Daviess County Ky Federal Census project, you'll find at the very bottom of the image list an index of the folks appearing on the census. I happen to know that a whole lot of hours were spent deciphering those names - I did that index myself. This is not to brag, but to tell you that finding not only names of my Tucker relatives, but those of Reason McDaniel (the enumerator spelled it Resen) and William Winkler really brought it home that these were real people. I felt like I had found old friends. Thanks, Carol, for all of your hard work.
Carol, Thanks for sharing the journal. Didn't recognize any of the names but read them all anyway! It has been enjoyable reading and also some insight into the life of manual labor of all or ancestors! Lona
I am a direct descendant of the William Winker named often in your journal transcriptions, and I truly appreciate it. I am also a direct descendant of Winfield Scott Winkler, who was pastor at Mt. Carol, I appreciate your sharing this journal with the list! Thank you so much for all your time and patience! I always looked forward to the next installment and will be sorry to see it go. Thank you so much, Carol, for sharing this. I really appreciate your time and effort in giving us a day to day insight to life back then. I'm going to miss it. Sally Kasey Emily desc. of Duncan, Head, Brashear, Avitt, etc., etc. of the Maceo/Yelvington area.
Dear Carol, I am sorry to learn Davis' journal is ended. I have enjoyed and have looked forward to each post these many months we have been blessed with their posting to the list. It is an insight to how life was lived in those times. Thank you for sharing the journal with the list. Regards, Virginia
Carol, I also enjoyed this journal. I was wondering if any of the list members had any information on the Obryan listed on the last page of the journal? (who was his wife, parents, or children were) Thanks Patrick O`Bryan.

Would it be possible for you to send this to people on your mail list or to people you know that do genealogy in Indiana? I would really appreciate it. Thanks, Darlene Anderson IGS East Central District Director Henry County INGENWEB ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There is proposed legislation to prohibit public access to vital records for the state of Indiana! House Bill (HB) 1540 can be read online at http://www.in.gov/legislative/bills/2003/IN/IN1540.1.html Some of the language in HB 1540 is: "h. When one hundred (100) years has elapsed after the date of birth, the records of those events in the custody of the state or local registrar shall become available to the public....." There is much more to read concerning HB 1540. Have I gotten your attention yet? I sure hope so and I hope that each and every one of us contacts our legislators about this. We've got to contact our legistatures immediately telling them of our opposition regarding HB 1540 as genealogists and family historians. Please read on: In this morning's Indianapolis Star in Section B City & State on page 3, House Bill 1540 is listed for Hearing on Wednesday morning at 10:30 from the Public Health Committee. Our emails and phone calls to legislators will need to start immediately with follow up letters in the mail on Monday! Express your opposition to proposed HB 1540 adopting new privacy standards for Indiana's public vital records! Even if you live outside the state of Indiana you may be affected by this HB. This applies to all of us - If we, at some point, wish to become a member of an organization that requires us to prove our lineage and HB 1540 becomes a law we will not have access to birth or death records to do this. Our desire to become a members of any organization that requires us to prove our lineage may be in jeopardy! Please contact the persons that have authored this proposed legislature. The site where you can find email address for IN Representatives is http://www.in.gov/cgi-bin/legislative/contact/contact.pl We are all concerned about identity theft. The state of Indiana requires information from us that should safeguard the issues of theft identity. Please contact your representatives by email, phone and follow-up with a letter.
