1. [KYDAVIES-L] Re: [kybullitt] Roll Call from LINDA
    2. Linda asked to whom Enoch CLARK belonged. With no date or place given, who knows? CLARK/CLARKE is one of the 50 most common surnames in America. (Click on: http://www.lifesmith.com/comnames,html ) It's number 21. As such, Clarks are everywhere. Every nobleman or man of means had a clerk to keep his books and when surnames were adapted around 1200-1300 it was only natural that many of these clerks assumed the name CLERK or CLARK. The English still pronouce clerk as "clark." CLARKs were everywhere and were not necessarily blood kin. I have been trying to connect my Kentucky CLARK family for 50 years without any luck. my gr-grandfather was Elijah CLARK, son of John CLARK and Elizabeth McGREW. Elijah was b. 1853 in Grayson County, KY. John CLARK was b. abt 1821, prob. in KY. His father was Charles R. CLARK, I've been told - no documentation on this. Can anyone help with this massive brick & stone wall? Cookie, a Hoosier in Florida << GreystokeB@aol.com >>

Daniel Grass, lone survivor of his family, who had been killed in Kentucky, was taken into the home of Dr. William R. Hynes, of Bardstown, Kentucky. He married Jane Smeathers from the settlement of Yellow Banks and tradition tells us that he came here in the interest of Dr. Hynes. This seems to be true because of the various land transactions. On May 9, 1807, Daniel Grass made the first land entry on the territory where Rockport now stands. Sometime later he built a log house south of Rockport and moved his family and became the first permanent settler. He changed the name to Mt. Duvall, in honor of Col Wm Duvall, a Ky friend. On March 11, 1808, William Berry bought land on the river below Grass and lived on his houseboat with is family until a cabin in the woods could be constructed. Daniel Grass later became the first County Agent and Berry became Judge of the Northwest Territory. 3. To prevent any confusion caused by the e-mnail sent out yesterday, the Hancock Co., KY maillist has not gone anywhere and is still at hancock@yahoogroups.com. The KYHANCOC@rootsweb.com list was formed after we started our official Hancock Co. list and I adopted it several years ago to keep exactly what is happening now from happening. I am trying to get the situation worked out. I appreciate you patience. Patrick Hays listowner Hancock Co., KY mail list

    3. Redbird is right about Reynolds Station. Those turtles were probably trying to get to The Black Cat, which was/is just across the Ohio county line on 54 (Leitchfield Road in the ol' days). That was an infamous "watering hole" in the 40's (probably years before & since). The area around Whitesville, just up the road in Daviess county was "dry", and The Black Cat's bad reputation made it a very attractive place. Tony Howard
