    1. [KYDAVIES-L] Martha Carroll-Amos Owensboro 1864
    2. Nena Smothers
    3. Hi....anyone recognize this family. Trying to help locata Martha Carroll after her husband Amos died in Owensboro....any ideas would be helpful, thank you..Nena <<Martha Carroll (maiden name unknown) was born about 1820-1825. Each early census is different. She was born in Germany. She and Amos Carroll moved alot. Taken from the 1860 census, oldest child William was born KY, ended up in IN. (Have his history). Sylvester born OH. Elijah born OH. Joseph born OH., I.A. born IN. Amos JR. b ky. Amos and Martha were living in Owensboro KY. when he died. There is a will on file that someone is trying to obtain for me. It may give some clues. I have checked the censuses for Martha with each of the children that I have been able to find. Sylvester died in the civil war. Joseph went to CA and returned to MO. Joseph settled in MO. I.A. -have not a clue as to her life. She was born abt 1856. Amos Jr. settled in MO. Have not found her with any of them, but have not been able to find the 1870 census for Elijah. In 1870 she should have had the 3 smallest kids with her. Joseph would have been 16 in 1870, I.A. 14, Amos Jr. about 10. She is probably right under my nose, but have been unable to find her. Elijah married in Fayette Co. IL in 1873 to Eliza Dempsey. Hope this helps. I kinda rambled on and on. Thanks for your help.>Arlene>>>>> _________________________________________________________________ The new MSN 8: smart spam protection and 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail

    1. [KYDAVIES-L] George W. Thompson
    2. Doug & Marcy McCammish
    3. Looking for the parents and other family of George Washington Thompson, born in Daviess Co. in about 1831. If living with his family in 1850, he would be about 19. In 1860, he was with his wife and young children in Pike County, Illinois. In 1870, he and his larger family were in Daviess Co. in the Owensboro District. If anyone has access to a Daviess County 1850 Census index, could you please check for George W. Thompson (or G.W. or Washington - he used all those interchangeably in different censuses). I have a death certificate for his oldest daughter, Sallie (Sarah) E. Thompson Finnie, that says George W. Thompson was born in Daviess Co. Thanks, Doug

    1. [KYDAVIES-L] Request for help
    2. Arlene
    3. I am wondering if there is someone who might be able to find the grave of Amos CARRELL in Daviess County, KY? Amos died in 1864 and left a will. One very nice person is in the process of looking up this will for me, but I would like to know where Amos is buried and exactly when he died. I hope this is not a repeat request. I have written everywhere and not received replies, so I do forget where I have written. Thank you for any help you might be able to give. Arlene acrawf@tacnet.missouri.org

While Grissoms Landing is listed several times in the Daviess County History it is not given a location nor is it shown in the Daviess County 1876 Atlas. Can anyone tell me where Grissoms Landing (and Masons Landing) is located? I will list it in my book notes if it can be described or located. Thanks for any help, Harold Bishop Morgan

    1. [KYDAVIES-L] Oxley-Bell-Houghton
    2. Nena Smothers
    3. Didnt someone have some Oxley research..wondering if this family sounds familiar at all..... also the Bell family or Houghton's...any help is appreciate, thank you kindly...Nena <<<We have two mysteries on my side of the family (probably more). There is a grandfather we do not know on the OXLEY side of the family. Jenkins OXLEY was a base-born son of Hannah OXLEY some time around the Revolutionary War. He is my ancestor. He may have been adopted by Everett OXLEY. Still checking on this. He inherited land, learned farming and turned out to be a stable member of the community. Secondly, my maternal grandmother had been told she was a Bell all of her life. She used the Bell name in school. When my mother was a teen, my ggrandmother wrote to grandma Grace and told her she was not a Bell. My mother found her weeping about this. Of course, nobody really cared at that time. Everybody else in the family was happy-go-lucky. The letter was put up on a shelf and forgotten. My ggrandmother in WV knew nothing about sex as a young girl and was taken advantage of and perhaps raped. This produced a daughter. Her parents tolerated that and tried to help raise the daughter. My ggrandmother then, fell madly in love with someone who had red hair and who worked on the railroads. Because she got pregnant, she was kicked out of her parents home with her first child and had to go to Indiana to have the baby. That baby was my grandmother, Grace. Later, my ggrandmother returned to WV and worked in a home to support herself. Her parents had kept back all of the letters this young man had written. My ggrandmother ended up meeting someone who was almost 20 years her senior. His wife had died and left children. They got married and had children together. It was a marriage of convenience. My ggrandmother called her husband, Mr. Bell. He was to be obeyed. Not too long after she was married, the railroad man came back to get her...but alas...it was too late...she was married. A romantic, but sad love story of missed connections. We have never found my ggrandfather, the railroad man with red hair. According to my aunt, the letter said, Wheatley was his name. A Bell half-cousin said she heard it was Houghton or Haughington. His first name was Otto. H anyone out there heard of a red headed Otto??? Oddly enough, my mother married a red-haired German, whose family rejected her because she was from WV and might be a hillbilly. My mother still winces with pain sometimes. >>>>>> _________________________________________________________________ The new MSN 8: smart spam protection and 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail

    1. [KYDAVIES-L] MY - MY - MY
    2. A FAMILY HISTORIANS LAMENT AUTHOR UNKNOWN I've been doing family history for nearly 30 years, Diligently tracing my illustrious forebears, >From Pigeon Lake to Peterborough, Penrith to Penzance, My merry band of ancestors has led me quite a dance. There's cooks from Kent and guards from Gwent and chimney sweeps from Chester. There's even one daft fisherman lived all his life in Leicester, There's no- one rich or famous, no not even well-to-do, Though a second cousin twice removed once played in goal for Crewe. I've haunted record offices from Gillingham to Jarrow, The little grey cells of my mind would humble Hercule Poirot. I've deciphered bad handwriting that would shame a three year old, And brought the black sheep of the family back to the fold. My bride of just three minutes, I left standing in the church, As I nipped into the graveyard for a spot of quick research. Eventually I found an uncle, sixty years deceased. That was far more satisfying than a silly wedding feast, After three weeks of wedded bliss, my wife became despondent She named the public records office as the co-respondent. I didn't even notice when she packed her bags and went I was looking for a great granddad's will who'd died in Stoke on Trent But now my 30 year obsession's lying in the bin Last Tuesday week, I heard some news that made me pack it in. Twas then my darling mother, who is not long for this earth, Casually informed me they'd adopted me at birth!

    2. Am interested in corresponding with anyone researching Zachariah Briant and wife Tabitha Stinnett who resided in Davies/Ohio Counties from 1818 til 1843 when they moved across the border to Spencer Indiana. Zachariah and Tabitha's daughter was Elizabeth Steerman widow of Thomas Steerman who died in Davies County, KY before 1827. I know that he was dead then because Zachariah Briant sued the estate ( his daughter and grandchildren) for the the house and lands that they lived on. Great insight into this family Huh? Maybe if I sued my family I would move out of town too. :) Thank you for taking the time to read this-- Candee Hoff

    2. I have been away from the research area for sometime and thought I would post my inquiry to see if anybody is interested in the Sinnett /Stinnett families. My ancestor is Richard Sinnett a pioneer of the Davies/ Ohio Counties of Kentucky. He was born in the 1760's. He married Mary CATES in Lincoln County, VA now KY on September 20, 1786. They were active members in the Baptist Church-- the Old Panther Baptist Church. They moved around from Lincoln -to Mercer to Ohio Counties and then Davies. From Davies, it is rumored that they left the Old Panther Baptist Church to move to Illinois. Where in Illinois, I don't know. Any help out there would be really appreciated. Candee Hoff
