I.too. would like to add my name to those who have enjoyed Davis' journal. I also want to thank you again for your dedication and for your generosity in sharing it with us. I shall miss "dear old boring Davis" even though "boring" is not "our" Davis. Having lived in Daviess County for the first 10 years of my married life I am aquatinted with the names mentioned in the journal and that makes the writings even more meaningful. It's a true window to the past. It was true dedication on his part to maintain this journal in the midst of all that had to be attended to. If only I were as dedicated with my journal. If you do decide to continue with the remainder in one form or another, I'd like to be included. Many thanks to you and to Davis. Wishing everyone on the list a Great New Year and many more to follow. Oh my Carol, I for one am going to miss the Davis Journal . My Ancesters were within 3 miles of where most of the people in the Journal were and it was during the same time peroid. Thanks for sharing it with us. Bob Norris
I have enjoyed reading the journal very much. It has helped me remember that most of our ancestors were hard working farmers who were scraping by. They made, grew or raised most of the things they needed and what they couldn't make themselves, they bartered from neighbors. It was a very different world. I would be happy to read the journal whenever you can send it. Thanks, Dana Christian
Carol, I, for one, would like to Thank You for your dedication in 1999 in transcribing this journal!! I know it isn't always easy to read the writing, much less to write it all out for the rest of us to enjoy. THANKS SO MUCH!!! A Happy 2000 to everyone, Susan Johnny Arrington wrote: > > The end of 1999 also brings us to the end of 1855 and a year in the life of > a Ky farmer. Davis's book continues through the end of 1859. The end of 1999 also brings us to the end of 1855 and a year in the life of a Ky farmer. Davis's book continues through the end of 1859. I want to thank the list for keeping me focused on transcribing. I had read through it but never taken the trouble to write it out. Thank you also for the positive feedback that I have received and the interesting on-line discussions. If any one wants a complete transcript they can e-mail me privately and I can send it by reply. I am discontinueing the daily post but would be willing to continue sending entries from his journal on a weekly or bi-monthly schedule if the members of the list are still interested. I have had one negative message and don't want to be a nuisance. If only a few are still interested I can make up a cc list of those who haven't had enough of dear old boring Davis. I will probably never stay disciplined enough to transcribe the rest of it any other way. I want to wish everyone on the list a happy and prosperous new year. Carol Arrington

1855 Dec Mon 24 It is very cold we staid in Ohio - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- - -------------------------------------------------- Dec Tues 25 It is no better yet I helped W S Tucker hunt his cattle - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- - -------------------------------------------------- Dec We 26 Still worse than before I hunted birds awhile As usual Davis doesn't say much about what is going on in the house. We'll just have to read between the lines and make up a happy Christmas for them. They went to Ohio County to visit his wife's family. I hope they had a nice visit and a good dinner to celebrate. Davis's daughter was about 3 and the Tucker's had a baby in Feb. so he was probably getting into everything by then. Maybe Grandma Black made little Amanda a rag doll or Grandpa whittled something for them. At least we can hope so, otherwise being crammed into a little log cabin in the bitter cold probably was no fun at all. Let's all count our blessings and give thanks for the important stuff tonight. Merry Christmas to the list. Carol

Sheryl, I got one of these messages too, with the title that I gave it to the KYDAVIES list, and yes, it had an attachment called Monica.exe. However, I noticed that both the To and From addresses were both mine (it did not go out to the list). I'll bet the one you got also said To and From yourself. Bottom line is that this indicates that someone on this list has a remailer virus. The virus is being sent to everyone that person receives email from. DO NOT OPEN AN ATTACHMENT THAT ENDS IN .EXE. That's the only way to make sure you are safe from executable viruses. So, for all of us, if you get an email both To and From yourself, with an attachement, NEVER EVER OPEN IT, DELETE IT IMMEDIATELY. Dear List, I have just opened my e-mail this a.m. and found this message that I supposedly had sent dated Tues. Dec. 21 1999 at 09:20:53. I did not send it. I do not know what it is. Don't open it. I will run a virus scan on it asap but at this present time delete this message. I have called my server and they do not know anything about it either. Appreciate your help, thanks sheryl
James Washington VAN HOOSIER (b. abt 1842 in Crawford County, Indiana, d. Dec 1881 in Daviess County, Kentucky). I'm trying to find where he is buried (my g-grandfather). My family and I have exhausted all the normal searches of looking through known cemetery listings and church records (thanks to all who have helped), my kin and other volunteers have walked all the local cemeteries, and I've posted pleas for 4 years asking for help, and we still can't find his grave. But, we also realize he was probably buried in an unmarked grave. What I'd like to know is how to get access to look in newspapers for December 1881, for Owensboro. We are thinking that perhaps our last hope is finding some mention of his death in the newspaper. Our family stories say there was a snow on at the time of his death, so perhaps even if we could find something in the newspaper about a day in Dec. 1881 with a snow on, that might give us a more pinpointed day and some other leads to follow. To make matters worse, the spelling of his name could be off quite a bit, as in various documents, we have found his last name spelled as VAN HOOSER, VAN HOOZER, VAH HEEZER, and sometimes any of these without the VAN. Also, in the 1880 Daviess County census, his name is given as G.W. VAN HOOSIER. If any of you know a reputable Daviess County researcher for hire that I could get to help me, I would greatly appreciate it, as I am not in the area. Thanks so much and happy holidays, Janet Snyder

Anyone have any information on the Rev. Owen Barbee who was a minister in the Presbyterian church in Owensboro in 1920s? Amelia Kelly mbpkelly@aol.com
I am looking for information on my gg-grandparents, John W. THOMSON (THOMPSON) and wife Sarah. They are found on the Daviess County, KY 1850 census on page 359, Dist.1. They also have a Robert A. WILLIAMS living with them. If anyone on the list has access to a KY marriage book, I would like a look-up on this couple. They may not have been married in Daviess Co. The marriage date would probably have been 1840-1845. ANY information will be appreciated. Faye in Texas cnfb@flash.net
