    1. [KYDAVIES-L] BLEEDING A HORSE
    2. Juanita Berly
    3. I would think they bled horses in those older days much as physicians bled their human patients. It was probably an attempt to rid the horse of an infection. Just a guess of course, since I am not quite that old.

    2. I found the reason that Davis Douthitt "bled" Mr Richmond's Colt. I Contacted Dr Donald Barnes, A local Veterinarian and he stated that it was a common practice for people to Drain some blood out of a horse if the horse was sickly or not feeling well back during that time peroid .They believed that the horse had bad blood and when the blood was drained that the horses body would replace it with new Good blood. The little Tool that I discribed earlier that was triangular shaped was called a "Lancet". I also learned that Bleeding was also used on humans and may have been a contributing cause of the death of President George Washington. Bob Norris

    3. My step father used to tell me that as a young man he spent about a year as a jockey, and that "bleeding" served pretty much the same purpose as it did for humans - to reduce the quantity of blood in hopes of correcting related cardiovascular ailments. Perhaps it was a practice to help control blood pressure and bloating or water retention - now controlled with diuretics. I do know that I once saw an unusual device that was a triangular shaped and was used to cut a horse right below and behind the horses ancle in order to make the horse Bleed. The man that owned that device knew what it was used for but did not know why it was necessary to make the horse bleed. Does anyone out there know why this was done?
