    1. [KYDAVIES-L] McCormicks
    2. I am looking for info on the Emmett Bassett McCormick family. Specifically I am looking for the name of his first wife. Emmett was born in 1854 in Daviess Co., KY. He and his first wife had three children. Rodman D., Sarah Daly (my great grandmother) and Emmett A. I believe Sarah was born in 1892 and her mother died when she was approx. three years old. I believe after childbirth (Emmett A.) I have no info on the mothers name. I know Sarah was sent to live with her Aunt Sallie Daly/Doly, who ran a boarding house in Lexington. In 1910 I have Emmett B. married to Lena L., but this has to be his second wife. If anyone can help I would be greatly appreciative. You can email me at laj1009@aol.com

    1. [KYDAVIES-L] ASHBY's in Daviess county about 1830's & 40's
    2. Tina Hall
    3. Hi everybody. It's a new year, and I am hoping there are new listmembers who might be able to assist me. I am looking for either the parents or a prior marriage for my Nancy E. Ashby b. May 9th, 1822 in KY. She married James Aaron Thomas on Feb. 25th, 1840 in Daviess Co. then moved to Webster county with her husband. She is my GG-grandmother. She was 18 when she married, so I figure that Ashby MUST be her maiden name, although she could have married and become a widow too soon. A suggestion was made concerning Peter Ashby and Cynthia Hancock, but I believe Peter was about the same age as my Nancy. I also found an IGI record that shows a Nancy L. Ashby born abt 1822 in Hopkins co. to a Daniel Ashby and Cassandra Leeper, but can't be sure as there are no documents that I can locate to prove it is the same Nancy that I have. Any assistance would be appreciated. thanks, Tina Hall res00waz@gte.net Tina's Family Genealogy Page: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~thall Steve's and Tina's Home pages: http://home1.gte.net/~res00waz/ +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ "If you cannot get rid of the family skeleton, make it dance!" ~ George Bernard Shaw +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    1. [KYDAVIES-L] One Hundred Years Ago In 1901
    2. Susan Elliott
    3. As one interested in Genealogy I found this quite interesting. I hope you do too! Susan >In 1901: The average life expectancy in the United States was forty-seven....... Only 14 percent of the homes in the United States had a bathtub......... Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone. A three minute call from Denver to New York City cost eleven dollars.......... There were only 8,000 cars in the US and only 144 miles of paved roads........ The maximum speed limit in most cities was ten mph....... Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa, and Tennessee were each more heavily populated than California. With a mere 1.4 million residents, California was only the twenty-first most populous state in the Union......... The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower......... The average wage in the U.S. was twenty-two cents an hour. The average U.S. worker made between $200 and $400 per year...... A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, a dentist $2500 per year, a veterinarian between $1500 and $4000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5000 per year......... More than 95 percent of all births in the United States took place at home....... Ninety percent of all U.S. physicians had no college education. Instead, they attended medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press and by the government as "substandard." ........ Sugar cost four cents a pound. Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen. Coffee cost fifteen cents a pound......... Most women only washed their hair once a month and used borax or egg yolks for shampoo......... Canada passed a law prohibiting poor people from entering the country for any reason, either as travelers or immigrants........ The five leading causes of death in the U.S. were: 1. Pneumonia and influenza 2. Tuberculosis 3. Diarrhea 4. Heart disease 5. Stroke The American flag had 45 stars. Arizona, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Hawaii and Alaska hadn't been admitted to the Union yet...... Drive-by-shootings -- in which teenage boys galloped down the street on horses and started randomly shooting at houses, carriages, or anything else that caught their fancy -- were an ongoing problem in Denver and other cities in the West....... The population of Las Vegas, Nevada was thirty. The remote desert community was inhabited by only a handful of ranchers and their families.......... Plutonium, insulin, and antibiotics hadn't been discovered yet. Scotch tape, crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea hadn't been invented........ There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day..... One in ten U.S. adults couldn't read or write...... Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school........ Some medical authorities warned that professional seamstresses were apt to become sexually aroused by the steady rhythm, hour after hour, of the sewing machine's foot pedals. They recommended slipping bromide -- which was thought to diminish sexual desire -- into the women's drinking water...... Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at corner drugstores. According to one pharmacist, "Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach and the bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health." ........ Coca-Cola contained cocaine instead of caffeine........ Punch card data processing had recently been developed, and early predecessors of the modern computer were used for the first time by the government to help compile the 1900 census........ Eighteen percent of households in the United States had at least one full-time servant or domestic....... There were about 230 reported murders in the U.S.annually.......

    3. Carol, you're right the journal is boring. Boring like mine would be, and I absolutely love it. It kinda puts me in the middle of life in the 1850's and makes me realize how hard our ancestors worked and how generous they were with their time. Also the team work it took , with neighbors helping neighbors, to keep dinner on the table and fire wood in the box. Don't stop! It's wonderful. 1. [KYDAVIES-L] New Year Message
    2. Johnny Arrington
    3. Happy new Millenium. The list has beeen awfully quiet lately so maybe you will be happy that Davis Douthitt resumed writing his daily journal on New Years Day 1857 and is as boring as ever. For new list members a quick explanation James Douthitt married Elizabeth Barnett in Daviess County Jan 19,1826, their son Davis, was born Dec 19, 1826. He lived all his life on the family farm near Knottsville in an area known as Scythia. My mother was born in 1914 in the same house he lived in. Davis kept a daily log of his activities from 1855 through 1859. I have been transcribing this from his original manuscript and posting it to the list on a weekly basis for the last two years. It is slow work. I try to be as accurate as possible but those of you who have struggled to read old documents know how didfficult this can be. His handwriting is usually readable and his spelling isn't bad but he wasn't too concerned about punctuation or capital letters. The people he names are all either neighbors or relatives and I have attempted to identify as many as possible. If you draw a circle on a map with Owensboro, Hawesville, Hartford and Hardinsburg in the perimeter you would probably include every place he ever visited.. His grandfather, Solomaon Barnett and in-laws Willis & Mary Black lived in Ohio County, some of his Douthitt relations lived in Hancock county. For those who came in late and want a copy of 1855 and 1856 please e-mail me. Carol Elliott Arrington
