    1. [KYDAVIES-L] Another brick wall - BALSER
    2. Leslie Moore
    3. Since Nadine was successful in breaking down her brick wall I'll give mine another try. I'm looking for information on a Cordie BALSER (married name) who was probably born around 1860. She moved to Davies County, KY when she married. She and her husband, name unknown, had the following children: John BALSER Robert BALSER Jamey Cenus BALSER Does anyone have any information on these people who lived in Owensboro, KY during the early 1900's? Thanks, Leslie lmoore@ecsis.net Personal Website: http://www.ecsis.net/~lmoore/ Lake County, TN County Coordinator: http://www.ecsis.net/lakecounty/history/

    2. Thanks for all the congrats on breaking my brick wall. Don't give up on your own. It can be done. I went back and almost started all over. I looked for things that I missed the first time. Looked for relatives and re-questioned them. I found that if you don't say you are researching family history, they can talk all day about the family. If you say family history than they clam up. Good Luck on your search. Nadine

Adams and Eph. Mcdaniel role logs we finished at half past 2 oclock and then I made fence John halled rails all day ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Th 19 I fixed some logs and went to the blacksmith shop to get my plows sharpened and John cut briers and bushes and in the evening John went to Yelvington after Dr Bennett for Mr Gatewoods child ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Fri 20 I started at 12 oclock last night to Yelvington after a catheter and had to go to Owensboro to get it and got back at 8 oclock and then we worked with the child a good while and I got home at 11 oclock and cut some logs and roled out of the fence roe and John halled some rails and I built fence and fire broke out at Allens and Gatewoods and I went and helped fight fire 3 oclock in the evening until about 3 or 4 oclock next morning John watch our fire. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Sat 21 I helped S. W. Allen build fence where it was burned and tore out at dinner we sent after John and oxen to help hall rails after we got done the fence I halled some wood for S. W. Allen and G. Gatewood ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- Sun 15 - The Douthitt he went to see was probably his cousin Martin. Mon 16- Ben Shadwick was a neighbor (#419 in 1860 census age 34 (2nd) wife Elizabeth (Barker) age 20) He was also a brother to Davis's aunt-by-marriage , Catherine Shadwick Douthitt. There are a number of Paynes in the neighborhood. C. H Payne age 33 was # 648 in that census. Davis is #645. Matilda O'Brien age 47 lives with him and his family and may be the "Widow OBryan" Davis sometimes mentions Fri 20 - A medical emergency and a fire! Our boy had an exciting day. Does anyone know what sort of catheter would have been commonly available for sale or how it may have been used? I believe that they frequently cleared land by cutting off all the trees and brush. Rolled it into huge piles and burned them. If they weren't careful the fire could get out of control.

    1. [KYDAVIES-L] Owensboro in 1818 - 1835
    2. Daviess Co. Ky: In 1780, the first white settlers came, via the Ohio River, to what is now Daviess County. Early settlers included Joseph Blackford and William Smeathers. Smeathers came in 1798 and built his cabin on a site near the river, which is now St. Elizabeth Street in Owensboro. From this dwelling constructed by Smeathers, the first settlement began. The city was originally called "Yellow Banks" in reference to the color of the soil along the banks of the Ohio River and was selected as the county seat when the county was formed in 1815. Daviess County, the 58th county to be formed in Kentucky, was named in honor of Colonel Joseph Hamilton Daveiss, a distinguished lawyer and soldier. In 1817, the city's name was changed to Owensborough (later changed to Owensboro) in honor of Colonel Abraham Owen. Owensboro is the industrial and cultural hub of western Kentucky. Located along the southern banks of the Ohio River, Owensboro is the third largest city in terms of population in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Owensboro is located 32 miles southeast of Evansville, Indiana; 123 miles north of Nashville, Tennessee; 109 miles southwest of Louisville, Kentucky; 203 miles southeast of St. Louis, Missouri; and 205 miles southwest of Cincinnati, Ohio.

    3. Kevin, Daviess County was cut from Ohio County on 14 Jan 1815. So during the years you mention Owensboro was already in Daviess County.
