Surnames: Holsapple, Holtsapfel, Van Meter Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/jAB.2ACI/1842 Message Board Post: In the past I have made reference to the following article con- cerning the source of the Hesse-Darmstadt issue. Finally I have found the article. Went over to Reed College Library in Portland,OR and it was there. Robert V. Woods Woodland, WA William and Mary College Quarterly Historical Magazine Published by William and Mary College Vol. VII second series. January, 1928 No. 1 pgs. 58-59 Van Meter, Holtsapfel Wanted, the names of the father and mother of Catherine Van Meter, who in 1783 married Jacob Holtsapfel( German form of the name, now usually written Holsapple)probably in Pennsylvania. Data: (1) Jacob Holtsapfel came from Hesse-Darmstadt. The father of a well-to-do man and provided Jacob's education in law. Jacob came to America with the Hessian soldiers to aid the English to their efforts to subjugate the colonies. He probably left Germany in the late fall of 1777. He is supposed to have served three years. He refused to return home, consequently his property was confiscated. He married "a Dutch women by the name of Van Meter in Pennsylvania1783." N.B.--Jacob Holsapple of Lancaster County, Pa., is not the right party. Data: (2) The Van Meter family (Dutch) came to America about the 1660; lived in and around New York, New Jersey (especially Salem county), eventually in S.E.Pennsylvania, S.W. Pennsylvania and the Valley of Virginia. Jacob met and married a Van Meter, who immediatre family I do not know. She was probably born between 1760-65. Jacob and Catherine lived in Pennsylvania until about 1798, six of their ten children were born in that state. They then moved near Abington, Washington county, Va., where (between 1810-1812) Jacob died. (Their daughter, Catherine married Henry Gabbert, August 29, 1811.) His widow and part of her children moved to Washington county, Ind., and after a few years to Clinton county, Ky., where Catherine H. died in 1825. A.H. Yoder.
