    1. Beaty/Beatty info

    3. Hi Nel, My grandmother, Migno Maude 'Beatty' Parker, was a great family record keeper. She kept a record of all births, marriages, and deaths, she preserved many old family photos, and passed on many family stories. My mother, Alberta Maude 'Parker' Johnson, continued the tradition. There was a Parker family Bible that had many of the dates recorded in it. It was passed on to a cousin of mine who passed away a few years ago, and no one knows what happened to the Bible, but some of my dates came from there. Also, as a young woman, (probably 1889-90), my grandmother started a quilt top, and in each square she crocheted the name, birth date, marrage date, and death date of James and Emaline Beaty, his son Alvin Perry Beatty and his descendents, also Parker descendents, and other related families. When a child was born, she added a square, and when someone was married or died, she added the date to their square. The quilt was a work in progress, and was never finished. My si! ster has the quilt top now. I have quite a few old photos of my g-grandfather, Alvin Perry Beatty and his family dating from the 1870's thru the 1950's. I'll be happy to share anything I have. I'm sure your "Dear Sister" letter is probably the same one I have. No, I don't have a copy of the original. I found my copy in a typewitten publication titled "The History of the Beaty Family" by Burlene Hilton, Lincoln, Ark. Tom ============================================================================================================= Hello Tom, Thank you for the info on your Beatty/Beatty line. I'm always interested in Beaty info. I had all the names of your line in the BP2000 L2B Master File -- except we thought Migno Maude was Misno Maude. You do have many dates that I didn't have. Can you tell me your sources? I have a transcription of an 1854 "Dear sister" letter from Jehu I found in SAGA OF THE BEATYS. I suspect that is the same letter you mention. Do you have a copy of the actual letter? The SAGA transcription is sort of confusing and has a few lines/words she couldn't read. Nel

    3. Hi Nel, (again) You had mentioned that you thought Thomas Travis was the father of Catherine, so I did a search for "Catherine Travis, father: Thomas Travis" on "FamilySearch.org" and found the following info on Thomas Travis. Catherine and Elizabeth are listed as the daughters of Thomas Travis, b: 1837 in Baltimore County, MD; m: Hannah Hutchins on Mar. 20, 1774 in Baltimore Co., MD. Hannah Hutchins was born in 1750. Their children were: Elizabeth, b: 1779, Baltimore Co. MD, d: Dec 27, 1863, Clinton Co., KY; Catherine, b: 1779, Baltimore Co., MD, d: 1867, Beaty Valley, Clinton Co., KY; Thomas b: 1782, MD; William, b: abt 1783, MD., d: aft 1860 in Fentress Co. TN; Jeremiah, b: abt 1784, NC, d: 1872, Livingston, IL; Hannah, b; Mar. 2, 1786, Travisville, Overton Co., TN; Nancy, b: 1788, Travisville, Overton Co., TN, d: 1878, Russell, KY. The info I had on Catherine and Elizabeth indicated that they were both born in 1779. The FamilySearch info said one was born abt. 1778 and the other in 1779, however I believe they were probably twins born in 1779. My Travis connection is through both Catherine and Elizabeth Travis. Catherine was married to my ggg-grandfather Alexander Beaty, and Elizabeth was married to my ggg-grandfather Alexander Hays. MY BEATY CONNECTION: ALEXANDER BEATY, b: 1768; d: 1850 in Beaty Valley, Clinton Co., KY. m: Elizabeth Travis on Dec. 1801 in Sullivan County, TN; Elizabeth Travis, b: 1779, Baltimore Co., MD; d: Dec. 27, 1863 in Clinton Co., KY. JAMES P. BEATY, b: Jan. 5, 1811, Clinton Co., KY; d: May 11, 1856; m: Emaline Hays on Sep. 16, 1838 in KY. Emaline Hays, b: Feb. 12, 1821, KY; d: Nov. 7, 1907, Kay Co., OK. ALVIN PERRY BEATY, b: Aug. 14, 1841, Clinton Co., KY; d: Apr. 30, 1922 in Oklahoma City, OK.; m: Zerrildia Atteberry on Oct. 15, 1866 in Macoupin Co., IL; Zerrildia Narciss Atteberry, b: Mar. 24, 1849; d: July 22, 1928 in Oklahoma City, OK. Both are buried in the Atteberry Cemetery, near Rome, Sumner Co., KS. (NOTE: In later life, Alvin changed the spelling of his name from Beaty to Beatty. In his civil war records it is spelled Baty.) MIGNO MAUDE BEATTY, b: Mar. 21, 1870 in Macoupin Co., IL; d: May 2, 1938 in Oklahoma City, OK; m: Albert R. Parker on Sep. 5, 1893, in Johnson Co., NE. Albert Rufus Parker, b: Sep. 12, 1869 in Atchison Co., MO; d: Oct. 7, 1945, in Winfield, KS. Both are buried in Memorial Park Cemetery, Oklahoma City, OK. Hope this isn't too confusing. I have more if you're interested. Do you have a copy of the letter written by Jehu Beaty to his sister-in-law, Nancy Odle Beaty, wife of Thomas P. Beaty? Thomas and Jehu are brothers to my James Beaty, and your Allen Beaty. If you would like to have a copy let me know. Tom ========================================================================================================= Hi Tom and Jim, I don't know for sure about the family of Elizabeth Travis, but this might be a clue for you to follow. My Travis connection is Catherine Travis born 1779 in Baltimore Co., MD. She married Alexander Beaty in Dec 1801 in Sullivan Co., TN and they settled in Clinton Co., KY. They are the parents of James Beaty b. 1810 who married Emaline Hays b. 1821. I have not been too successful documenting Catharine's ancestors, but I'm pretty sure her father is Thomas Travis who died 5 Jun 1837 in Travisville, Overton Co., TN. I know she had a brother William born abt 1783 who died in 1860 in Fentress Co., but suspect there are other siblings. The Revolutionary War Pension application that Thomas Travis submitted in 1833 when he was 96 is a little confusing, but it gives the following info: -- He was born and raised in Baltimore Co., MD. -- after the RevWar, he continued to live there "don't recollect precisely how long and then moved to Wiks County South Carolina some few years [I think this must be Wilkes Co., GA which is very near the SC border] -- He then moved to Washington County Georgia and stayed there ten years [I think this is Washington Co., VA -- Catharine was married at the Beatys farm in a part of Sullivan Co., TN that was thought to be part of Washington Co., VA until the state line was surveyed.] -- He then moved to Green County, TN and lived there about four years. [I think he would have been here about 1799 when your Elizabeth was married there.] -- he then moved to Overton Co., TN to the part that in 1823 became Fentress Co., and in 1833 he had lived there "upward of thirty years" I hope this helps in your research. I would like to share info on these families with you. Nel Rocklein Newnan, GA

    3. Hi Nel, Thanks sooooo much for all the info. I also came across a bit of additional info which just adds to the confusion. I did a search for Alexander Hays on "FamilySearch" (the LDS site) and found a research entry that says Alexander Hays was born in 1777 and his ancestry was James Hays Jr. (1760-1828), James Hays (abt 1745 to 5-31-1816, Ireland) and John Hays Jr. (1726 to 12-26-1801, England), and John Hays (1704 to 11-16-1689, Ireland). If you would like to check it out go to http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp the search criteria that I used was: Name: Alexander Hays Wife: Elizabeth Travis Event: Birth/Christening Date Range: + or - 10 years 1769 Country: United States It will bring up 2 entries, check the second one. I don't know what information is correct, but I lean towards the info you found in the book. Do you know when it was originally published? I guess it just means more research. I have some more info that I will send in another e-mail. Thanks again, Tom Johnson, Oklahoma City I came across this little bit of additional info. Hope it helps. Nel from EARLY TIMES IN CLINTON COUNTY, Vol. 1, Rev, Ed., by Jack Ferguson page 420 Alexander Hayes (footnote) 23 "The name of this individual is variously spelled "Hayes" and "Hays". A son of Nicholas (ca 1730 - 1803) and Alse (Hunter) Hayes (ca 1730), he was born in Virginia around 1769. He came to Clinton County fairly early; he had 200 acres surveyed on Spring Creek on June 27, 1799. His wife was Elizabeth Travis, born in Maryland in 1779, who was a sister of the Hannah Travis, born in Georgia in 1786, who married Soloman Long. Their children were: Thomas; Lewis; James; Nancy (1802) who married Abner Wright; Mahala (Carson); Matilda (Smith); Malinda (Sandusky); Sarah (Westrope); and Emmaline who married James Beaty. Both Alexander Hayes and his wife died the same day, December 27, 1863. He died first and she died later that night."

    1. Mitchell and Elizabeth Johnston/Johnson
    2. Jim & Mary Smith
    3. Hi List-recently there has been some traffic about Alexander Hays and Elizabeth Travis. I responded that Matilda Hays, their daughter, married my Palmer Smith. Over the past several years I did a little capture of Alexander Hays and Elizabeth Travis family. After the email mentioned I did a little more. I noticed that Nancy Hays married Abner Wright and had several children. Two of their kids, Hanna and Mahala, married into the Johnston line. Hanna married John G Johnston and Mahala married James J Johnston. So we have two sisters married to two brothers. Further searching reviled that their parents were Mitchell and Elizabeth Johnston. Now some will say Johnson but I am pretty sure it's Johnston. All but two of the census checked on have Johnston. I went back and captured the 1830, 1840, and 1850 census for Mitchell & Elizabeth. 1830 Census, (Cumberland), KY: JOHNSTON, Mitchell, 1m (1800-1810-Mitchell), 1m (1820-1825-John), 1m (1825-1830-James), 1m (1825-1830-William), 1m (1825-1830), 1f 20-30(1800-1810-Elizabeth), 1f (1815-1820-Unknown), 1f (1820-1825-Unknown). 1840 Census, (Clinton), KY: JOHNSTON, Mitchell. 1m (1800-1810-Mitchell), 1m (1820-1825-John), 1m (1825-1830-James), 1m (1825-1830-William) 1m (1835-1840), 1f (1800-1810-Elizabeth), 1f (1820-1825-Unknown), 1f (1820-1825-Unknown) 1f (1835-1840-Elizabeth), 1f (1835-1840-Martha). 26 Aug 1850, (Clinton), KY: 329-329 JOHNSON, Mitchell, m, w, 48(1802), VA, farmer, Elizabeth, f, w, 50(1800), VA, John, m, w, 23(1827), KY, James, m, w, 21(1829), KY, William L, m, w, 19(1831), KY, Elizabeth, f, w, 14(1836), KY, Martha, f, w, 12(1838), KY (Page 2-49). Does anyone know who the two females were that were born between 1815 and 1825? The reason I am asking is that my Palmer Smith was married to a Johnston or Johnson and she was born abt 1820 in KY. Her name was either Icy or Louisa or both. When you look at the 1860 census John G Johnston lived next door to my Palmer Smith. Hope there is a kind sole that has this info. I am willing to share what I have on the Johnston Line. Take Care, Jim Smith Collinsville, IL

    3. To all you nice folks out there that responded to my request of a few days ago, (below), for "Hays & Travis" information. I was gone for a couple of days, and when I returned there were responses from several of you good folks, with some great information. Unfortunately, before I could answer any of your responses, my e-mail program locked up, and when I finally got it working again, my in-box folder was totally deleted. Computers are wonderful gadgets, but they can certainly be a headache sometimes. Anyway, if any of you that responded, still have the messages you sent, before 7-28-05, in your "sent items" folder, I would really like to have them again. If you don't want to post them to the Clinton county list again, you can send them to me directly at: Tomj02@sprynet.com (that's a zero2). One of you had mentioned that you had been to the Hays Cemetery, and that it was being destroyed by the cattle. I was wondering if you had exact directions to the cemetery, and if you might have any photos of the grave markers. It's a long way from Oklahoma City, but I have been thinking about making a trip over that way in the near future. Thanks to you all, Tom Johnson, Oklahoma City Is there anyone out there in Clinton county land that has information on the parents of Alexander Hays (Hay) or the parents of his wife Elizabeth "Travis" Hays? Alexander Hays was born in 1777 in Virginia. Elizabeth Travis was born in 1779, location unknown. They were married on Sep 24, 1799 in Green county, TN The both died on the same date, Dec 27, 1863, and are buried in Hays Cemetery, Clinton County, KY Does anyone have any information on the cause of their deaths? Alexander and Elizabeth are my ggg-grandparents through their daughter Emaline "Hays" Beaty (Beatty) who married James P. Beaty on Sept. 16, 1838 in Clinton Co. Also looking for info on the death and burial location of James P. Beaty who died on May 11, 1856. Any information on the Hays, Travis or Beatty (Beaty) families would be greatly appreciated. I have information on Beaty, Beatty, that moved from Clinton county, to Macoupin County, IL, then to Kansas and Oklahoma. I will be happy to share with anyone interested. 3. The Travis and Beaty Cemeteries are very close to each other. That is probably where the oldest members of each family would be buried. Gary D.
