There may have been multiple migrations from Clinton county KY to Texas. At least one son from the family of Robert C SMITH (b abt 1802, VA) and Cynthia D Ragle (b Jan 1813, VA) relocated to Texas. The widowed Cynthia, my wife's 2nd great grandmother, also went and was still alive and living with her son George SMITH in 1900. George and family were in Fannin county, TX at that time. The pattern of birth states for his children indicates the family relocated from KY to TX before about Sept of 1884. By 1910 the family were in Hunt county, and lived in or around Greenville. Several people have asked me about the wagon train that left the Clinton and Wayne Co., KY area about 1900 bound for Texas so I will write the little I have pieced together about this. I have heard of it for over 40 years from my husband and his relatives. My husband's grandparents were George Washington and Martha Ellot (STINSON) BROWN of Clinton Co., KY. George was born in 1874 in Wayne Co., KY to Elijah and Jane (BERTRAM) BROWN. In 1892 he married Martha E. STINSON in Clinton Co., KY, the daughter of Henry and Lavina (RIGNEY) STINSON of Alpha, Clinton Co., KY. By 1900 George and Martha BROWN were in Justice Precinct #2, Collin Co., Texas. They were there with Constant E.W. and Sophronia (OWENS) DAVIS, as well as General S. and Marion E. or Mary E. _______ DAVIS. The two DAVIS couples were also from Clinton Co., KY and were on the 1880 Clinton Co., KY Census in the Piney Woods. Constant and Sophronia DAVIS were the parents of General S. DAVIS. I did not find a marriage for General S. DAVIS and Mary E. ____ in Clinton Co., KY but I am sure they married before migrating to Texas because their first three children are listed as being born in KY and the next two, Sophia and Garland are listed as being born in Texas. This means ! the DAVIS'S were there by 1893 and sometime after October 1889. I cannot prove it yet but think Mary E. ______ DAVIS was a sister to Martha Ellot (STINSON) BROWN. Since George and Martha BROWN married in 1892 the wagon train may have left KY about the time they married. General S. DAVIS and family remained in Texas but George and Martha returned to Clinton Co., KY sometime after 1900 by railroad train because Martha hated the Texas storms. I have been told that George BROWN'S uncle and aunt, Eli H. and Nancy (SMITH) BROWN, sold all they owned in Clinton Co., KY to go too, but went by William GWINN'S house, who was a brother-in-law, and he talked them out of it. It is well known that George Washington BROWN'S brother, Fount BROWN and his wife, Rhoda (STINSON) BROWN went to Texas and remained there the rest of their lives. I had always assumed they went at the same time as George and Martha but they may have gone a little later. Rhoda was a first cousin to Martha Ellot (STINSON) BROWN, and the daughter of Tilman C. and Artema Willa(WESTMORELAND) STINSON. Fount and Rhoda's first child was born in Clinton Co., KY in 1899 but the next one was born in Texas in 1904. In summary . . . there was at least one wagon train that went to Texas from the Clinton Co., KY area because I have heard several reference to it through the years. There may have been two different groups that went out there. The first one could have gone between 1889-1893 and the second one some time between 1899 and 1904. By Dec. 12, 1904 George and Martha BROWN were back in Clinton Co., KY for the birth of their first child. My husband is of the opinion that George and Martha BROWN were only gone about a year so that makes me think they went out about 1899, were enumerated there in 1900, and then hurried back home to Clinton Co., KY. I am sorry I cannot be more specific. Family researchers know that until recent years major relocations were accomplished by groups of people rather than individuals, usually lots of relatives and friends from the same area migrated together. I was taught early when I began to trace my roots to look at the neighbors for clues. If there is a transcription available of the 1900 Collin Co., TX census it probably will show other people from Clinton Co., KY. Hope this helps someone! Sincerely, Anna Bertram abertram@heartoftn.net
Hello! I am not a DAVIS researcher but found them near my husband's BROWN grandparents in 1900 Collin Co., Texas. All were from Clinton Co., KY. I have heard for years that a wagon train left the Clinton and Wayne Co., KY area for Texas in the early 1900s but it now appears it may have been a little earlier. I have a darling picture of two small children named Sophia and Garland that was taken in Texas and mailed to my husband's great-grandfather, Henry STINSON, in Clinton Co., KY. Now I know who they were. They were children of General S. and Marion E. (UNKNOWN) DAVIS from the Piney Woods of Clinton Co., KY. Sophia was born about 1893 in Texas and her little brother, Garland, was born there in 1897. I'll be glad to share the picture with anyone researching the DAVIS family. Generals' parents, Constant and Sophronia (UNKNOWN) DAVIS, were next door to my husband's grandparents, George Washington and Martha Ellot (STINSON) BROWN in Collin Co., Texas. I believe a relationship exists by blood or marriage between Henry STINSON, Martha's father, and the DAVIS families near them in Texas who were also from Clinton Co., KY. I am looking for the maiden names of Sophronia _____________ DAVIS, wife of Constant DAVIS and also of Marion E. ___________ DAVIS, wife of General S. DAVIS. Thanks for any and all help! I'm always glad to exchange information. Sincerely, Anna Bertram abertram@heartoftn.net

The first Reuben that you have who is the son of Martin is not the husband of Sally Warinner that Reuben is the son of Samuel Washington and is the Reuben who is the father of my great grandfather and who I need to find his stone and his second wife Lou E. Was hoping that they would be buried in the same cemetry and beside each other. But guess that would be to easy. Martin and Samuel are related not sure if they are brothers or Uncle and Nephew they are both decendents of William who fought in the Rev War.. However there seems to be a Samuel and Martin in every generation as well as lots of Reuben's. My grandmother had an Uncle Rube plus a brother Rube. Her father was Sam and she had a brother Sam. So it gets very confusing as to which Sam goes with who and so on. I have Reuben Owens buried in the Sam Owens Cemetery. His dates are April 1, 1843 to April 17, 1898. He was the son of Martin B. Owens and Mary Leveridge. He is listed as the husband of Surilda. I have a Samuel Washington Owens who was born on June 16, 1804 and died on August 3, 1879. He was the son of Reuben Owens and Sarah A. Lockhart. Samuel is also buried in the Sam Owens Cemetery. I have Sally Warinner Owens as the 1st wife of Reuben Owens. Her dates are July 9, 1838 to July 10, 1859. She is buried in the Warinner Cemetery. Robert Owens (1783-1860) and his wife, Elizabeth, (1794-1867) are the oldest Owens I have. Both were buried at Peolia Cemetery. I have a few pictures of the oldest stones in some cemeteries, but not all. I am currently updating all my books to include digital photos and GPS plots. Currently there are 147 Owens listed in the book. Let me know if I can be of further help. Gary D. Gary do you have in your book Ruben Owens and his wives Nancy, Sarah, & Lou E. ( Louisa) ? And does your book have pictures of any stones? I know this is a strange request but am hoping to find something that I can use to prove his wives so I can get the name of his second wife which is Lou E. which I found on census records. He and Candace had a son, then moved to Clinton county, KY late 1849 or early 1850. The 1850 census mistakenly has all born in VA. 1850, Clinton co KY: Mabane (37), Candace (25), John (3), Beaufort (2). 1860, Clinton co KY: Maborn (44,NC), Candis (45,NC), John (14,NC), Bedford (11,NC), James (8,KY), Sarah C (7,KY) John H CHEEK married Francis J BROWN in Clinton county 7 Jan 1865. A John H CHEEK enlisted in the South Cumberland infantry battalion, 10 Jun 1865, and mustered out 23 Oct 1865 in Columbia, KY. There was a James H BROWN enlisted in another company of the same battalion, 24 March 1865. I suspect he was brother to Francis, and a John BROWN does appear as surety for the marriage bond. There is a BROWN family in Clinton county of that era which looks like a good match, as follows: 1850, Washington co, VA: Andrew Brown (36,VA), Mahaley (28,VA), James (6,VA), John W (5,VA), Mary A (3,VA), Francis J (fem,1,VA), Andrew J (1,VA) 1860, Albany, KY: Sally Miller (37,TE) farmer, Rebecca (35,TE), Ester (69,TE) spiner; Andrew Brown (37,VA), Mahala (35,VA), James Z<?> (16,VA), John W (15,VA), Francis J (fem,11,VA), Andrew J (9,VA), George F (7,VA), Elizabeth C (6,VA), Analiza (3,VA), Debey (2,VA) That would make John about 19 and Francis about 16 when they married. If anyone knows more about either of their families, I would like to hear from you. I have been unable to locate John and Francis CHEEK in 1870, and I am wondering if perhaps Francis died during childbirth after she and John CHEEK married. John H CHEEK remarried, 8 Feb 1876 in Clinton county to Gallatia W ALLEN, b. abt 1844, NC, daughter of Hinton J ALLEN and Harriet WELDON, who came from Granville county, NC to Clinton county KY between 1855 and 1860. I suspect that Candace ALLEN, mother of John CHEEK, and Gallatia ALLEN were related. It is possible Gallatia's father, Hinton ALLEN, and Candace ALLEN were siblings, children of Drewry ALLEN and Rebecca CHAMPION, who also came to Clinton county, KY between 1850 and 1860, from Alamance county, NC. John H CHEEK and Gallatia were probably in Barren county, KY in 1880, as: 1880, Hiseville, Barren co KY: J H Cheek (33,NC, NC,NC), G W (36,NC, NC,NC) There were other CHEEK family members in the area. James M CHEEK (son of Mebane and Candace) and Elizabeth Jane SMITH, both born in Clinton county, KY and who married abt 1871, had their 4th child, John M CHEEK, in Glasgow, Barren county, KY, 29 Nov 1881. James and Elizabeth CHEEK moved on to Missouri, where their sixth child, James R CHEEK, was born at Cave Springs, MO, near Springfield in Greene county. Also in Greene county and staying in that area for the remainder of their lives were Thomas SHELLEY and Charity CHEEK, who married in KY about 1873 or earlier and moved to MO between late 1879 and early 1882. According to her death certificate Charity was daughter of Mayburn CHEEK and Candace ALLEN. She might be the child listed as Sarah C CHEEK in 1860, age 7. According to a letter from one of her grandchildren, Thomas SHELLEY and Charity CHEEK eloped when she was 15, and rode 20 miles on a mule to get married. Thus they were probably married in a county adjacent to! Clinton county. I have not yet seen their marriage record, if it still exists. A transcribed 1890 tax list for Greene county, MO shows T W SHELLEY and J H CHEEK, both residing in Cass township. That is either John H CHEEK or James M CHEEK (I have not seen the original handwriting). I have lost the trail for John CHEEK and Gallatia ALLEN after that. They had no children that I am aware. Some of Gallatia's relations lived in northern AR. Kevin Kelly in MO

Gary, Not that I know of at this time. I have your book, "Rock of Ages," and it is a great resource help. Thank you so much. Chris
Chris, I do not have the dates for William Harper. I have twelve different Harpers buried inside Clinton County, but I unfortunately do not have him. Are there any others I might be able to find for you? Always glad to help. Gary D. There are different "Colored" cemeteries in Clinton County. Give me an indication as to where the deceased lived and I will try to match them up with a cemetery. Gary D.
