Maybe you can help correct some of my information. I do not have a death date on Dulcina WRAY. All I have is her birth date of 12/29/1858 found in the Clinton County Birth Records. Here are some questions for you: 1) 1880 census lists James Gist and his wife, Elsenia, living with Elizia Gist (James' mother). I assumed Elsenia was Dulcina. Would you agree? 2) I didn't know James' second wife was Mary Bell FERGUSON. Plus, thanks for the full name of Catherine "Cassie" MALONE as his third wife. I only had "Cassie" from the 1900 census. 3) You mentioned James had 3 children with Mary Bell FERGUSON. Are they Eva, Thomas L and Clayton? I had listed them as the children of Dulcina since in Gary Norris' book Rock of Ages, it lists Thomas L GIST as the son of James and Elsenia GIST (plus I assumed Elsenia is Dulcina). Is this incorrect? 4) I'm guessing you are from the EVA GIST line. I only have she married a BERTRAM (I do not have the first name). Do you have his info? Thanks again for your help in correcting this info. Dennis Wray Corbett

Her husband, James GIST was my gg grandfather. To my knowledge, they did not have children. I assume she died soon after she married James. James then married Mary Bell FERGUSON, with whom he had 3 children before she died. He then marrie Catherine "Cassie" MALONE, and had one more child with her. Robert GIST who married Martha WRAY was a brother of James GIST.

Forwarding FYI - I have no other information, but knowing there are a lot of McWhorter connections in Clinton County, thought some of you might recognize the name and be able to help. ~Sherri In the January/February 2006 edition of the Camp Chase Gazette magazine for Civil War Reenactors, the following query was printed. Family Sought to Place MOH Marker on Grave Salem, W. Va.--A Civil War roundtable is looking for descendants of a Medal of Honor recipient to give them permission to place a special marker at his grave. Walter McWhorter received the Medal for his actions capturing the Sixth Tennessee Infantry's Flag at Saylor's Creek, Virg. on April 6, 1865. He died at the age of 40 and was buried in Greenbrier Cemetery near the city of Salem. The roundtable needs the permission of the family before it can place the marker on his gravesite. It does not give any contact information. But I'm sure it could be had by contacting the Camp Chase Gazette, 800-624-0281 or 423-581-5630 or www.campchase.com. Not only is this my maiden name but the old spelling before my G. Grandfather Abner McWhortor changed it after moving from Jennings Co., IN. to Clark Co., MO. I still reside here. I'm sure we are all related even tho spellings differ. Another interest is that I have not found a direct descendent of a Union Veteran through my McWhortor name. I will be searching through my genealogy gleaning what I can soon. I will be elected the Nat'l President of the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, 1861-1865 next August. I hold membership through my Dixon, Bales, DeFord and Calvert lines. The Calverts and DeFords married into the McWhortor line. If you can find time, please help this soldier and his descendents out by helping me get this query posted. In gratitude, Patricia McWhortor Mullenix, Nat'l Sr. Vice Pres. Data: (1) Jacob Holtsapfel came from Hesse-Darmstadt. The father of a well-to-do man and provided Jacob's education in law. Jacob came to America with the Hessian soldiers to aid the English to their efforts to subjugate the colonies. He probably left Germany in the late fall of 1777. He is supposed to have served three years. He refused to return home, consequently his property was confiscated. He married "a Dutch women by the name of Van Meter in Pennsylvania1783." Pennsylvania and the Valley of Virginia. Jacob met and married a Van Meter, who immediatre family I do not know. She was probably born between 1760-65. Jacob and Catherine lived in Pennsylvania until about 1798, six of their ten children were born in that state. They then moved near Abington, Washington county, Va., where (between 1810-1812) Jacob died. (Their daughter, Catherine married Henry Gabbert, August 29, 1811.)
