Has anyone researched the Thomas Hubbard (b 1755) family? I have done so much research on my other families seems I have completely skipped over this side and would now like to go back and take a closer look at the Hubbard family. Would like to talk with anyone who has done research to compare what little information I have, and see if I am on the right track. My information was gathered from others when I first started so i don't know how accurate it is. Also does anyone know of any good Hubbard Research books that are available? Thanks, Cassy. -- Please check out my new free genealogy site. I am currently looking for others willing to share their photographs as well. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~foe3643/
Yes Cassy, there are many of us researching this line. I have researched it since the mid 1980's, but others have researched it for much longer. In the late 80's and early 90's, I collaborated with Mary K. Hubbard and James Welch on 3 or 4 articles about Thomas and his sons that were published in the Clay Co. Gen. Society's Newsletter. There are actually quite a few of us who are researching this line. About 15 persons formed a networking group in early summer of 2002. I really enjoyed working with the group, but had to put my research on hold when my computer crashed last winter and my husband became ill. Although my computer was repaired earlier this year, I haven't been able to resume my research of this line due to my husband's continued ill health. I have a lot of data on Thomas, his sons, and their descendants, if you have specific questions I'll be happy to help you if I can. Perhaps the highlights of my personal research were when I located the site of Thomas's mill which was in operation in early - mid 1800s and when I found where Thomas, his sons & their families were named in the Cane Springs Baptist Church's records in Madison County, KY. They lived there briefly after leaving Ashe Co NC and before moving to Clay & Knox County. The church is still standing and has recently been deeded to the Madison County Historical Society. It was truly awesome to stand outside the church, on a hilltop overlooking Muddy Creek and know my husband's ancestors stood there almost 200 years before. Regarding reference books, you may be interested to know that Mary K. Hubbard published a book in 1999, "Thomas Hubbard of Virginia and Kentucky: His History and Descendants." It is a very informative & well indexed book. I believe she still has some copies available. Another good source is a series of newsletters published in the early '70s by Leslie Hubbard, "Hubbard Family Genealogical Newsletters." These are probably available in larger genealogy libraries. A note of caution however, the info contained in these newsletters should only be considered as clues as to where to look. It cannot be consider as proof. Someone else made a posting on this list in response to your query, asking about the parents of Thomas Hubbard bn ca 1755. Those of us in the research group I mentioned had as one of our goals to prove who his parents were and who his wife was. We discovered information about this on various genealogy sites and studied several books that have been published about early Hubbard lines. Members of the research group examined the well documented Hubbard lines to see if "our" Thomas could plug into one. One such line is documented by Noland Hubbard Bowling in "Meet Your Ancestors: Some Descendants of Robert Hubbard (ca 1600 - 1663)". Another line is that of Thomas Hubbard of Lancaster Co VA. He was dead by 1717 and some of his line is documented in "Early Settlers" by Saunders and the "Douglas Register" by Wm Douglas. We have attempted to prove a connection with either of these lines, but haven't found it yet. Several genealogy websites do show "our" Thomas as being from one of these lines, but when seeking proof regarding the posting, those who posted the info said it was obtained from someone else's research; they had no supporting proof documentation. So, we are still looking. I believe whoever can prove Thomas's parents and/or wife, will be the hero of a great many Hubbard descendants! I am looking forward to getting back into the search myself.
