    3. After the Indian removal act in the 1840's (not sure of the date), many Indians simply lied about their ethnic background by passing for white or claiming to be "mulatto". Being an Indian was not something that people would admit to because of prejudice and fear. I have found who I believe would be my gggrandfather thanks to some very kind researcher. The confusion is that when I looked them up in the Clay Co. 1880 census on the LDS site it showed their race as "mulatto". My family is caucasian. I know that I have the right family as the dates of birth and names match, as does the area. Does anyone have any info on this family? Were Native Americans referred to as "mulattos"? I am very confused! Nanette
