If your family is of African American descent, then you will not be surprised at the following listings from the Fed. Census. However, if you are surprised, then it may be quite possible your people were either Melungeon or Native American. Anyone with darker skin colors than what were considered the norm, would be listed as either B or M. I am not really seeing either Jane WHITE or James PENNINGTON listed on the 1860.
