    1. [KYCLAY] Seeking Help - Dezarn Ancestors
    2. Donald DeZarn
    3. As a longtime subscriber and monitor of this wonderful mailing list, I'm hoping someone can fill in some blanks for me regarding a few of my Clay Co. KY Dezarn Ancestors. My 2nd great grand uncle Simion "Sim" Dezarn first married Sally Bowling on 31 Jan. 1878 in Clay Co. According to the 1880 census, they had at least 3 three children named Eli (born about 1876), James W. (born 1 Nov. 1878), and Brack (born about 1880). Recently, I've been researching Lea Dezarn Gentile. The California Death Index lists her mother's name as Boleyn (most likely Bowling) and father as Dezarn. An IGI record found on the LDS site for Lea Dezarn Gentile lists her mother as Sally Bowling and father as Sim Dezarn. Lea Dezarn was born 28 January 1894 in Clay Co. KY, and she died 28 May 1981 in Los Angeles, CA. Now here's where I'm having trouble sorting things out. Sim supposedly married his second wife Bettie Davis between 1890 to 1891. I'be been unable to locate an exact date of marriage. Bettie and Sim had at least 5 children named Louis Howard (born Jan. 1892), Margaret "Maggie" (born March 1895), Robert C. (born 29 Dec. 1897), Hannah (born March 1899), and William Isaac (born Nov. 1901). However, the Clay Co. KY school census taken on 20 April 1894 lists Saley Dezarn as the mother of James, age 15; Brack, age 13, and Sophia, age 6. Lea would have been about 3 months old at the time. This is the only record I've found that mentions Sophia, and I've been recently informed that Lea and Sophia were sisters. According to these birth dates, Lea would have been born to Sally Bowling Dezarn after Sim had married Bettie Davis. In addition, I believe, but have not proven, that Sally Bowling (born about 1856 in Clay Co., KY) was a daughter of William Bowling and Winnie Sizemore. Thus far, I have not found Lea or Sophia listed on any censuses. I'd greatly apppreciate any help and insight that can be provided regarding this Dezarn family. Another ancestor who continues to confound me is Woodson Dezarn. I've collected several pieces of information on Woodson, but I've been unable to determine his parent's names. The California Death Index lists Woodson Dezarn born 5 Nov. 1891 in KY and his mother's names is Lyttle. Woodson died 15 June 1960 in Los Angeles, CA. The 1900 Clay Co. KY census lists Woodson Dezarn, age 8, born Nov 1891 as a nephew in the household Harvey and Lily White Dezarn along with Harvey's mother and father Caleb and Elizabeth Davidson Dezarn, my 2nd great grandparents. This implies that Woodson is a child of a brother to Harvey, but I cannot determine which one it might be. In addition, the 1910 Madison Co., KY census lists Woodson Dezarn, age 18, as a servant in the household of William M. Webb. In the 1920 Franklin Co. KY census, Woodson Dezarn, age 29, is listed as a prisoner in the Kentucky State Reformatory. And, the 1930 Montgomery Co., OH census lists Woodson Dezarn, age 39, as residing in the National Military Home in that county. I recently discovered an old newpaper article from the Zaneville, Ohio Times Recorder dated 11 April 1950. The article contains a photo and a marriage annoucement of David J. DeZarn and Iris Finley, further stating that David's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Woodson DeZarn of Dayton. Lastly, a Woodson Dezarn applied for a Civil War pension on 3 July 1917, having served from KY. I think this is another Woodson Dezarn that also continues to confound me. Again, any help on Woodson Dezarn will be greatly appreciated. I know that I've been a bit "long winded", but I felt it important to state what I know thus far. 3. There were several families that moved from Clay, Laurel, Knox Counties KY to Vermilion Co IL. My Setser, Murray, Philpot, and Lewis families were part of the many that went there in the early 1920's. You may want to check out my Vermilion County website and follow some of the burial links and obits to see if any DeZarn are found. The main ones I can find are: Wiley DeZarn b. Dec 8, 1917 London, KY to Emory DeZarn and Maggie Burns, died Sept 24, 1983 and is buried Pence, IN. Robert Franklin DeZarn b. 1887 d. Oct 5, 1938 buried Sunset Cemetery, Danville Vermilion Co IL Robert DeZarn born June 1915 KY son of Frank DeZarn. Robert died June 13, 1922 at the age of 7 from a fractured skull. He is buried in Williamsport IN. Thelia Whites DeZarn born June 28, 1885 in Kentland, IN to John Whites and Martha Garland. Wife of Frank DeZarn. Died Oct 5, 1939 buried Sunset Cemetery. Maxine DeZarn born 1925 died 2002 at the age of 77 buried in West Lebanon IN. Bert DeZarn born March 20, 1926 son of Frank DeZarn and Delia Whites (I believe this is Thelia Whitis mentiond in the obit above) married Julia Sept 16, 1951. Bert died Nov 8, 1958 buried in Floral Hill Cemetery, Vermilion Co IL. Green DeZarn born Sept 30, 1895 Manchester, KY to Wiley DeZarn and Mary Crook. He married Daisy Farmer Aug 28, 1920. Green died July 28, 1960 buried Pence, IN Leonard DeZarn born Dec 23, 1906 Laurel Co KY to Wiley DeZarn and Mary Crook. He married Mae Hofer. 3. Kristie, Thank you very much for your detailed response. I definitely will check out all the data on your Vermilion Co. IL site. I glanced at it a moment ago. All of the folks you mention in your response are my immediate ancestors, all descending from my great grandfather Wiley DeZarn and Mary Elizabeth Crook DeZarn. As you mentioned, several are buried in the Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Danville, IL. I last visited the cemetery in Sep. 2000 in the company of Pearl "Jim" DeZarn, a son of Frank DeZarn and Delia Whitis DeZarn. Jim lives in Decatur, IL and turned 83 this past Feb. One thing that catches my eye is your use of the name "Robert Franklin DeZarn." This obviously is Frank DeZarn, husband of Delia. However, I've never seen a middle name of "Franklin" before. Can you please tell me how you found it?? Wiley, my great grandfather, was a son of Caleb and Elizabeth Davidson DeZarn of Clay Co., KY. Wiley, Mary, and the youngest of their children left KY and moved to Warren Co., IN about 1926 or 1927. Frank, Delia, and their family along with my grandfather Green DeZarn and my grandmother Daisy Farmer DeZarn were already living in Vermilion Co. IL, having moved there about 1920 to 1921 or so. During the early 1920s, Frank, Delia, and family lived near Allerton while Frank worked on a nearby farm. Green, Daisy, and my father Donald DeZarn (born Oct. 1923 near Rossville, IL) lived on a small farm outside Rossville, IL just across the stateline from Pence, Warren Co., IN. After Wiley, Mary, and children arrived from KY in 1926 or so, all members of this family lived in or near Pence, Warren Co., IN. I was born in Pence on 12 June 1943 in the house that was once the home of Wiley and Mary, and later the home of Green and Daisy when I was born. Wiley, Mary, Green, Daisy, and several other family members are buried in the Jordan Township Cemetery located less than one mile down the road from where their home once stood. If you'll click on the link below my signature in this email, you can go to my personal website (last updated August 2002). The opening page photo showing the Wiley DeZarn family was taken in Clay Co., KY in Sep. 1913. Again, thank you very much for your response. 3. Robert Franklin DeZarn was a name used for his obit or burial records. As to who provided the name on the death information I am not sure. It could have been a name used on someone else's obit. Pape Funeral home gathers their information from obituaries. I will surely check out your website and if you don't mind link to it on the Vermilion County site for other DeZarn researchers. I went to school with a Dianna (if I remember her first name correctly) DeZarn in Danville. She would be about 34. From: "Donald DeZarn" Subject: RE: [KYCLAY] Seeking Help - Dezarn Ancestors Donald, I just caught the middle of this thread, so don't know if the little bit of information I have will help you, but might provide some clues. One of my distant Rogers-descended cousins sent me her data. It includes a John Dezarn, born 1858, as third husband of Elizabeth "Lizzie" Hyden, born 1860 in Madison Co., KY. Lizzie was daughter of John Hyden and Sophia W. Hacker, who was born 21 Dec. 1838, Clay Co., died 2 May 1914, Clay Co. Sophia was daughter of Elizabeth Wilson, and granddaughter of Christenor Rogers, sister of my Bartlett Rogers. Lizzie Hyden was married to 1. Elijah Spurlock 2. Jim Webb 3. John Dezarn At least that's what my cousin tells me. Lizzie's brother John married Mary Baker, brother William married another Mary Baker, and brother Thomas Hyden married Polly Melton. 3. Konnie, According to my findings, Elizabeth "Lizzie" Hyden married in the following order: James "Jim" Webb about 1879, Clay Co., KY John DeZarn, 24 June 1883, Clay Co., KY Elijah Spurlock, 21 November 1893, Clay Co., KY The 1880 Clay Co., KY census list James Webb, age 22; Elizabeth Webb, age 20; male Webb, son, age 1 (this is mostly Floyd born Dec. 1879); Bayard R. Webb, son, age 5 months. Also in household are James sister and brother, Sophia and Julis. Living next door is Elizabeth parents and family. If interested, the 1880 census is available at www.familysearch.org. Lizzie and John DeZarn has at least two children named Sophia Dezarn (b. July 1889, Clay Co., KY) and Hallie E. DeZarn (b. November 1891, Clay Co. KY). Based on census data only, John was born about 1860 in Clay Co., KY, and Lizzie was born June 1860 in Madison Co., KY. Hallie married George Washington Thompson on 9 November 1910, Clay Co., KY, and they had at least one child named Joe Thompson (1928 - 1996) Sophia married William Gilbert (date unknown) and they had at least one child name Perlina Gilbert (b. 9 November 1908, Clay Co., KY).
