Dear Becky, My e-mail address is tdmarcum@tetontel.com. Dale
I will be reading the replies to this with interest because several in my family married into the Hensley family also, Bowlings. Lillian
The Scalf family has a genealogy website www.scalf-family.com
Hello Sharon, I've had extreme difficulty with this line too. Wm Hensley and Elizabeth Metcalf were the parents of Mary J. Hensley, born 4/14/1855, my husband's maternal great grandmother. I have no parents listed for Elizabeth, but have considered Wm. to be the son of James Hensley bn ca 1779 VA and Nancy Anderson bn ca 1789 VA. This may be incorrect. I'd appreciate any information about these two lines. Mary J. Hensley married Richard Scalf and their daughter, Martha Jane married Joseph Shorter. Their daughter, Flossie, bn 1916, married John Hubbard, bn 1913. Flossie and John were my husband's parents. Do you have any siblings listed for Mary J Hensley? I am also having difficulty finding the parents of Mary's mother Elizabeth Metcalf b abt 1815 (I am a Metcalf family researcher and their connection, by married, to the Elkins and Hensons of Laurel Co KY). I am thinking Elizabeth Metcalf may be a sister to Susan Ann Metcalf b abt 1820 who married Benjamin Hensley, or to a John Metcalf b abt 1812 who married Sarah Ann Hensley, or to a Lucinda Metcalf b abt 1814 who married a Levi Hensley, or a Jesse Metcalf who married Nancy Hensley b abt 1818. Wonder if there is any connection of Elizabeth Metcalf to any of these other Metcalfs of Clay Co KY who also married into the Hensley family line? Thanks Mary Sue Hubbard, and to anyone else for reading this query, for sharing any knowledge of these family lines. Anybody with confirmed information, please jump in here -- I will send what I have, but it isn"t my research -- I'm hoping I'm not leading anyone astray :) : I show Lucinda Metcalf to be the daughter of Hezekia and Rebecca (Elliott) Metcalf. She married Levi Hensely about 1830 in NC (probably Yancey Co). After Lucinda's death around 1839, Levi married Lucinda's sister, Nancy Ann. William "Sleepy Bill" Hensley married Elizabeth "Betsy" Metcalf about 1843 in TN. I show this Elizabeth to be born around 1827. I'm hoping someone will have some information on this Elizabeth -- This is one of my Hensley lines, and I've had difficulty finding information both on William and on Elizabeth as well (I don't even have parents for Elizabeth, but I don't show her as a daughter of Hezekiah and Rebecca. I don't have the parents of this William, either -- but he lives between Benjamin and Levi Hensley on the 1850 Clay Co, KY census. Levi does have a brother William, but it isn't this one. Would love to hear from others on this line ---- Sharon Robinson Peel Grandview, TX
My mom was born in 1908, and she went to High School at Witherspoon. Her folks lived on Leatherwood, in Perry Co. at that time, making it hard for her to further her education while staying at home. Hi Sharon, Glad to hear from you! I have Sarah Robinsons birth as 1795 in Hawkins Co., TN. This would make her too old to be William Robinson's daughter. This is from her marriage record to Samuel Hensley, so it should be pretty true. Have you read Tom McHone's book on the Barrett Family? He also puts Sarah as the daughter of Wiliam. The ages don't seem to match up, though. I have searched everywhere for a marriage of Sarah and Jobe, with no luck. I think that may give us the answer if we could only find it. I'll look in Madison Co. Thanks, Lorraine

I got this information from my mother, Rosemarie (Sams) White who graduated from Witherspoon in the 40's. She said Witherspoon College was not actually a College but rather a boarding school/children's home. In the early years they called it "college". It was run by the Presbyterian Church and is located in Buckhorn, Perry County. Clay cyt, Perry and Leslie Cty. all meet there close to Buckhorn. It was not uncommon for rural families to send their high schoolers to a boarding school for a better education because transportation was poor and the schools were not that expensive. Sometimes it would be cheaper to send them away to school where at least they would be clothed and feed them try to take care of them at home. Witherspoon had an orphanage where they had a little boys dorm and a big boys dorm, the same with the girls. The older girls had to help with the younger girls. Hope this shed some light on Witherspoon. Good Morning to all: My father, Aster Bowling, went to Witherspoon College. He passed away in 1966 but of course, now I am asking about his childhood. Becky, I have Sarah (Robertson) Robinson as the daughter of William and Catherine Robertson-Robinson, and Julius' sister. This is a very confusing line, and I have a dead-end right smack in the middle of it! :) :) I don't have a marriage license for Jobe and Sarah -- just an approximation of 1823 in Madison Co, NC. I haven't followed up the Madison Co, NC part to see if any of those early marriage records are available. Other possible counties for the Robertsons and Hornsbys are Buncombe and Yancey Counties, also in NC. RESPONSE: You need to return and repost your query providing the dates of births on these folks (even if approximate) . They are too common and there are too many of them to make a determination.
