Joyce, Thank you for the names of Julie Ann's children...I needed those! Yes, that is my Ned you found on that census. I have seen that one before...I do think it says Edd. The Charley on there is my Grandfather. I have been told that Ned's real name might have been Edward, just like you stated in an earlier email. I dont suppose your marriage index sheds any light on Mazie does it? I'm just curious if she died and John remarried to Julie or if Mazie might have remarried herself. If she did remarry, I dont know if she would be listed as Mazie Phipps(her maiden name) or Mazie McDaniel. I read with interest the queries about John McDaniel. I have no information on a John, but I have a Lucy (or Lucinda) McDaniel who married Charles McQuinn in 1815 in Clay Co., KY. Her father was named George. Is this the same McDaniel family? Thank you. Maxine Daly, _mdaly8485@aol.com_ (mailto:mdaly8485@aol.com) .
RESPONSE: Hello, Thank you for your kind words. You may or may not have these census listings from the 1910 Rockcastle. The reason I am passing it on is that on the listing for John McDANIEL and Juley, his wife and several of their children is a 23 year old Jess McDANIEL, listed as a son to the head of the household. That places his birth year around 1887. I also have several births from the KBI to pass on: 1910 Rockcastle Co., KY - Livingston Dwelling 259-270 McDANIEL, John, 48, mar. 2, mar. 11 yrs, b. KY; parents b. KY - farmer . .Juley, 37, wife, mar. 11 yrs, 8 born; 5 living, b. KY . .Arthur, 12, son, b. KY (if he is theirs, he was born outside their marriage parameters) . .Lillie, 8, dau, b. KY . .Rose, 6, dau, b. KY . .John, 3, son, b. KY . .Jim, 1 yr 2 mnths, b. KY McDANIEL, Jess, 23, son, b. KY * * * Next dwelling: Dwelling 260-271 McDANIELL, (very light and difficult to see but could be Ned) looks like __dd, age 31, mar. 1, mar. 3 yrs, b. KY; parents b. KY . .Grace, 21, mar. 3 yrs, 2 born; 2 living, b. KY; parents b. KY . .Charles, son, 3 , b. KY (assume your grandfather) . .Annie, one months, dau, b. KY Other births from the KBI in Rockcastle Co., KY to Grace/Gracie DREW: McDANIEL, Emmitt E., b. 1-17-1919 McDANIEL, Mallie M. b. 4-15-1924 These are probably additional births to Julia/Juley, etc. POINTER McDANIEL in Rockcastle. McDANIEL, Eva b. 9-5-1917 to Jeney POINTER McDANIEL, George b. 5-5-1915 to Juley POINTER McDANIEL, Cathern b. 6-30-1912 to Julie PAINTER I also noticed on the 1880 Rockcastle there is a Julia POINTER, sister, 23, single, b. KY listed with William R., age 23 and a Nancy M., age 22 with a one year old John M. and a one month old Alice C. It appears this is a husband and wife and two children along with his unmarried sister. Marvin would you know of a Martha Bell Gregory from Clay County Ky.? Her Father's name, I am told is Elisha Gregory. Martha Belle married Jasper Wages from either Laurel Co. Ky. or Clay Co., Ky. Hi Joyce, Thank you for a very informative email. It's nice to run into people like yourself who have a passion to help others. Out of all the replies, which wasnt many, you seemed the most interested in trying to help and I just wanted you to know that it did not go unnoticed. Thank you very much. Yes, John & Mazie have been quite the mystery for sometime now. Since I sent this post to rootsweb a few weeks ago, I was fortunate enough to stumble across my Mothers second cousin on ancestry.com. Turns out she had seen some things I had posted to another site and she had been looking for me for a year. She had alot of good information to share with me and even had 2 photos of John McDaniel....and since I had never seen a picture of him or had no idea what he even looked like, needless to say, I was just extremely excited!!! She and alot of other researchers feel the same way you do.....we dont think Celia McDaniel was married and her children were given her last name. I dont know if we will ever solve the mystery. Mazie is another mystery....John remarries in Rockcastle county in 1899 to a Julie Ann Pointer but we cant figure out what happened to Mazie. Anyway, thank you so much for all your efforts. Please keep my email address handy in case you find anything else out. Hello, Here is that 1850 Clay Co. listing I did not give you previously: Dwelling 476-476 McDANIEL, Cela, 32, b. KY . .Elizabeth, 13, b. KY . .Granville __?, 12, b. KY . .John, 8, b. KY * * . .Mary, 6, b. KY . .Nancy, 4, b. KY Joyce Taylor Collins La Palma, CA
RESPONSE: Hello, I have been away on vacation for a good part of October and am now just catching up on some older queries. The very first thing you need to do is to order your gg-grandparents' marriage record from the court clerk in Clay Co., KY. Check the main website for Clay Co. and there should be a link directing you there. In the marriage index this marriage appears as follows (transcribed): McDANIEL, John to MOSEY, Phipps Alabama mar. Sept 1866 - File 13 NOTE: So you can see that it is messed up too. With little or no education, one is about to find all sorts of different spellings and errors in the census and public records. Hopefully the marriage record will provide you confirmation of their parental and/or other age, etc. information. I believe I have found your Mazie PHIPPS and John McDANIEL. You can be the final judge on that. 1850 Clay Co., KY Dwelling 625 PHIPPS, Saml, 46, b. VA - farmer . .Mary, 41, b. VA . .Julena, 23, b. kY . .Julia, 18, b. KY . .Almeda, 17, b. KY . .Cintha, 14, b. KY . .Rebecca, 12, b. KY . . Rachel, 10, b. KY . .Irah/Izah??, 6, b. KY, male . .Mazy, 3, female, b. KY * * * . .Tennessee, 1, female, b. KY Now compare to the 1860 Clay Co., KY Dwelling 865 PHIPS, Samuel, 54, b. Va - farmer . .Mary, 51, b. VA . .Izeah W., 15, b. Clay - farm labor . .(in my transcribed census, the next name appears as Maga A., 13, b. Clay; however, I went in and viewed the actual microfilm and knowing that it should be Mazie or something similiar, I could see that what was written or appears to be written is: Maza A. ; however, I would be the first to say it looks more like Margret A. When you look very closely, you can see the census enumerator crossed off the bottom of what appears to be a "g" so one is left with some other letter such as a "z" or "s". . . Mary T., 10, b. Clay . .Josephine P., 7, b. Clay MORRIS, Julia, 31, b. VA (John MORRIS mar. Julana PHIPPS in Clay Co. on 11-5-1853) . .Mary, 6, b. Madison Co., KY . .Julia A., 4, b. Madison Co. KY I am simply assuming this is the correct John McDANIEL since I have NO AGES to go by: 1860 Clay Co., KY Dwelling 616 McDANIEL, Sela, 42, b. Perry Co. - farmer . .William, 25, b. Clay Co. . .Franklin, 20, b. Clay Co. . .John, 16, b. Clay Co. * * * . .Mary, 15, b. Clay Co. . .Wina, 12, b. Clay Co. . .Jesse, 7, b. Clay Co. I am missing that particular page from my 1850 and am not readily seeing this family. However, in the Vital Stats Book I have, there is this birth: McDANIEL, Jesse birthdate: 2-28-1852 Birthplace: Clay Co. Father: ___________ Mother: Seely McDaniel Res: Clay Co., KY NOTE: While I have no proof of this, it may well be that Seely/Selia/Sela McDANIEL was NOT MARRIED!! Sometimes when you order the marriage records of the children, it will actual list who the father was because often they knew who their father was even if the parents were not married. It simply takes some searching to locate this from available records. Often the true missing parent will be listed on the death cert, I have found in my own TAYLOR and associated family. >From the Clay Co. Vital Stats: PHIPPS, Josahina birthdate: 7-6-1852 birthplace: Clay Co. Father: Saml PHIPPS Mother: Mary PHIPPS res: Clay Co., KY I am not really seeing this Ned McDANIEL listed in Clay Co. Do you know where he grew up or did he go by some other given name. Sometimes Ned is used for Edward. Anyway, I cannot go any further until I get some more family particulars from you on where John and Mazie McDANIEL were in later years.
