Joyce, you are so right about the different spellings of certain family names. My mother`s maiden name was Pigg, also spelled Pyg, Pigue, Pique, Pegg and Pig. A genealogist writing on this subject offered thirty spellings of the common name Reynolds. My list add three additional spellings. In 1850, give a year or two, Richard Rennels made an affdavit that he was a brother to Pleasant Reynolds. RESPONSE: Leta, You are so correct about spellings. I've seen people get locked into the notion that someone is not their relative because the spelling is not exactly correct. Reality is that there could be 4 or 5 or even more sometimes of one spelling of a name. As for your DUCK family, I recall I did see a John DUK in Burke Co., NC as of 1790 records who could perhaps be connected to your Nathan. Again, I am not related to your family so far as I know. Joyce Thank you so much for you're help regarding Nathan Duck, I am in contact with Capt. Nicol regarding the Bales family and hope we can tie up some loose ends in the Duck family. On a side note, I have a copy of the marriage application for William Settle and Elizabeth Mariah Duck as well as the permission letter signed by her father Nathan. RESPONSE: Adding to the first bit of information regarding Nathan DUCK in Laurel Co., here is: MARRIAGE RECORD: SETTLES, Mark to DUCK, Permelia on Jan 14, 1839 SETTLES, William to DUCK, Elizabeth Monah on Nov 10, 1841 No doubt these are two dau's of Nathan DUCK, I would assume. Also, you might contact: Capt. Robert G. NICOL, USN retired at: captnicol@comcast.net who has some descendancy work on Ancestry.com regarding Permelia DUCK who he thinks is connected to your Nathan DUCK. I don't see a Nathan DUCK in NC early on. There are several Nathan DUCKS in Virginia. I am not related so far as I know. Edith, My father and mother lived there when they were first married. I remember dad talking about so many copperheads and rattlesnakes being there. Mom used to laugh and say that dad was scared to death all the time they lived there. Guess that is where I get my fear of snakes. I HATE THEM. Love Ruby
Hi List, I am looking for Willie and or Martila Coomer. If anyone knows anything about this family, please let me know. I believe that Martila was called Tillie or Tilly. Thank you in advance. Bertha Gilbert Warner --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
