I do not mean to burst anyone's bubble but the John Bakers of Leslie Co. can not be descended from the Simon Baker of England. I spent many hours in our genealogy library on this subject and it just is not so. Nancy

I have it on my video camera. It was originally a large Round Stone with initials carved into it. The cemetery existed before the Church was built in the 1920s. Back in the 1930s, High School also mapped out those buried there. My Mom and Grandmother were also on such teams from Stuart Robinson High School (Letcher County System) that went about documenting cemeteries. The shame of my youth, is that I and my cousins used to play in that cemetery next to the church and school, and none of us knew it was our famous ancestors. It was just an open area with lots of large Round Stones among the groomed grass and when John "Rockhouse" Sizemore and later Roderick McIntosh were laid to rest, large round stones were used for markers. It appears from research that money was a big concern in those days and Round River Bottom Stones were often the choice for markers. I'll look up on my video and see if I can extract a photo. I know that in the Courthouse a document used to exist that recorded those buried there. JOHN in CA

Hi John, Can you, or anyone, be more specific about where John "Rockhouse" is buried in that cementary? I have been there, lot's of markers, but most of them unreadable. Has it been passed down by anyone, exactly which grave is his? I have a Baker in my family tree. Samuel Baker, married Martha Reavis/Reevis, 1911. Martha appears as a widow in the 1930 Leslie Census. Martha was born about 1887. One of their son's, married my dad's cousin. Anyone know anything about this Samuel, or his wife Martha? There will be a cleanup at the Sibert Cemetery on Paw Paw Branch in Clay Co on Sunday June 1st beginning at 11 am. Anyone interested in helping out, either just show up or contact me. The cemetery is about 1/3 finished now and I would love to have enough people show up Sunday to get it finished. There are a lot of old graves there and our ancestors deserve a better resting place than what this has turned into. And when it is all done, pictures of all the legible graves will be placed on Cassy Sommers Tombstone Central Website. William

Nancy died at age 61, with many descents in Kentucky. Roderick remarried twice more. > The home of NANCY BAKER and RODERICK McINTOSH claimed over 15,000 acres before he died in 1879, "Roderick was 104". Their original home site is today (2001), listed on the National Registry of Preserved Homes, owned by the former 1990s Mayor of Hazard, Kentucky, who allows visitors 7 days a week. Tourists Groups are welcome. It is a beautiful home site, that is awesome to see in the mountains of Kentucky. Original buildings remain. All built and carved by hand from the natural resources on the land. > A person can appreciate NANCY BAKER's hard pioneer lifestyle with her children. It is a trip back to the early 1800 era when "wilderness" was a way of life. > In the 1896 year a Great Granddaughter "MARY LEWIS" at her age 25 established with a preacher, the first "Presbyterian Church" in Hyden, the County seat, in memory and respect of RODERICK and she MARY died the same year, after she had reburied RODERICK McINTOSH alongside the new Church with a prominent marker. The Marker was replaced in the 1960's. Other LEWIS & MORGAN & John "Rockhouse" SIZEMORE descents are buried next to Pioneer "RODERICK" where he rests in Peace today, in HYDEN, KY the County seat town of beautiful LESLIE County, formerly CLAY County. JOHN BAKER Pioneers in Southeastern KY. One Capt. John Baker descends from the Boston, MA, Rope Maker family. ( CLAY - PERRY - LESLIE County,KY ) Capt. John Baker, Jr. Another line CAPT. & LONG HUNTER , JOHN Rentie BAKER - Pioneer of KY. Their children descents populated Southeastern Kentucky in the 1800s and continues to dominate all BAKER lineages in the modern era. Researchers will need to dig deep to prove the mothers of both men and DNA testing of BAKER lines are now building a huge database in 2003. I would appreciate hearing from any interested parties and offer any assistance. BAKER's have been among many of the FEUDS in KY and of course the "Capt. John Baker, Jr." I descend from was murdered by two of his own slaves, as reported in the John J. Dickey writings of 1892-1898. His burial site marker can still be read on the original burial stones. Just a small update and correction. I had the Burchett Dailey cemetery in Carter County, listed as the Burchett Plummer cemetery. I have corrected the names and the links are listed below. Please if anyone can help with the UNKNOWNS listed I would love to put a name to the stones. Unfortunately so many of the stones get 'washed away' each year and while someone out there knows who these individuals are, I just can't make out the names. If you come across someone who you know. PLEASE e-mail and I will be more than happy to correct their name. Cassy. Another big update on tombstone Central. Please don't respond to Tombstone Central on the lists, don't want to upset the list moms. :-) Happy Memorial Day everyone. While we are out this week at the cemeteries think of Tombstone Central and send me a few photos to post on the site. Remember we have posting from all over the US not just Kentucky. Kentucky just happens to be my soft spot. Cassy. foe3643@mac.com Follow the links below or look up my main page search for Tombstone Cental on any search engine..... Howdy Cousins, I have been off list for a while to change internet servers and to take a storytelling tour of Appalachia. I traveled through 4 states telling stories about Clay County and the folks that populate my stories. Over 2,000 folks attended 10 events and it was awesome. I called it my Appalachian Jubilee Road Trip. On March 16 I recorded my second CD of stories - live!!!! and some friends played old time music for it so it will be a combination of mountain music and tall tales. I tell several stories about my (imaginary) hometown over on Red Bird River called "Beloved". I actually had a lady who bought one of my CDs try to find it last month as she was visiting in the area. Just a reminder, I am working on the following families: Holland, Arnett, Gilbert, Bowling, Smith, Carpenter.
