Dan, I have seen your name on the messages sent to the Christian Co., Ky. list inquiring about various Vass families. My husband`s distant relative, Susie Amelia Fritz (b.March 19,1903 - at Fairview, Ky.) married Edward Bennett Vass and I think they only had one son whose name was James Edward Vass who married Claudine Smith. James Edward and Claudine had four sons named James Edward Vass Jr., Robert Montgomery Vass, Thomas Smith Vass ( about 46 or so, whom I know ) and David Bennett Vass. You may know all of the above, or not looking for information about this particular family. The reason I`m writing you is as follows --- Betty McCorkle called me tonight. She is one of two ladies who are updating and also combining into one book three sectional Christian Co., Ky. cemetery books, plus any other Christian Co. cemetery records not previously published. As you can imagine this has been a huge undertaking. They have worked on this project for two years. Betty asked if I knew anything about any Vasses who were buried in the Woodson Cemetery, which is about 7 1/2 miles east of Hopkinsville, Ky. Directions --- From Hopkinsville at the intersection of old Hwy. 68 East and the entrance to Western State Hospital, go 7 mi. on old Hwy. 68 East , turn left into a lane and go approximately 1/2 mile. The cemetery is on the right of the house. In May, 1966 when Woodson Cemetery tombstones were copied, there were only ten stones. The names found were Eaton 2, Woodson 6, and Vass 2. Mary F. Vass, December 9, 1837 --- July 24, 1928 and Jno. G., son of M. P. and S. A. Vass , April 15, 1896 --- October 8,1896 Betty knows John G`s parents are Mills P. Vass and Sarah A. Woodson Vass. And she knows that when Hwy. 68 East was four-laned in the last few years it went over the Woodson Cemetery, legally. She has spoken to someone who was in charge of part of the project who told her that they moved 39 people and if we could find out the names of the others a nice marker would be put up listing all names we can discover, and dates, if known. Betty found out that a farmer had thrown the other stones in a sinkhole before the original cemetery books were ever published, thus only the ten stones were there to be copied. Betty is not on line, and I told her I`d seen your name on the Christian Co. site and would try and contact you to see if you might know anything about any other Vasses, or ANYONE who could have been buried in that Woodson Cemetery. Of the 10 stones the earliest birth dates are 1820 and 1822, the latest death date--- a WW1 veteran died in 1960. Other death dates are 1862, 1866, 1896, 1904, 1911,1923, and 1928. The big new book is almost ready to go to either the publisher or the printer, I forget which. So if you will, please e-mail me at psfritz@apex.net so ANY information you or anyone you know might have, can get in the book. I`ll take it to Betty as soon as get it !!! And, by the way, do you have any connection to Christian or Todd Co. , or Kentucky ? Hoping to hear from you soon, Peggy P.S. Old two lane Hwy.68 E still goes through Fairview, Ky. but new four-lane 68 E bypasses Fairview, which pretty much sits on the Christian and Todd Co. line.
