    2. Can anyone tell me when the monument closes for the season? Thanks Dan Vass. Dan, the Jeff Davis monument? It closes in September, I believe. However, it is closed for repairs and has been for two years. Supposed to open the first of May next year. It sure is looking much better. The new gift shop is open. A much nicer one than the tiny one that had for a long time. Have you ever traveled to the top of the monument? It's not bad at all. I was so afraid to ride the elevator for years, but got up the nerve after I married. I had been to the park many times as a child but would never go up. It's ten miles to Hopkinsville but you can see the town from the top of the monument. And Pilot Rock, if you are familiar with any of the area. Jean ~~

    3. We brought our Austic son, Phillip, into that small, tiny gift shop when he was around three (1974). He did not yet speak and rarely responded to our verbal "warnings" - it took only about ten seconds to realize that we had made a mistake bringing him inside that tiny "easy-to-reach-the-expensive-stuff" shop! Time to go, he balked and refused to leave -- I had to grab him and carry him out while he screamed bloody murder and everyone stared at the cruel man (me) with Phillip kicking and screaming. I am confident we have not yet returned. With a bigger shop and a 34 year old Phillip, maybe we can stop by next year! I would like to ask the more experienced Christian County "explorers" if the JD Monument can be seen from the top of Pilot Rock on a clear day? Can you see Hopkinsville? I have climbed Pilot Rock, but with my fear of heights combined with a very windy & hazy day I did not see much! Thank goodness my research efforts in Christian County have always been very rewarding and successful! <grining> John G.
