In regard to the person using Rootsweb to lead people to a link, let me mention that I have recently been getting spam from people who use the same names as the lists I am on. For instance, I am on McCord, Morse, Calvert, lists. I get e-mail from people who are using these names and when I open the letter it is an advertisement and sometimes it is for porn sites. I mentioned this to a friend and he said that it's possible that people who want e-mail addresses for advertising purposes might be getting them from genealogy sites. All I know is that lately I have been getting a lot of spam with my family's names in the "From" column. So, another thing of beware of. Juanita At 09:18 AM 3/27/04 -0500, you wrote: >Diann, > >No! There is a way for people to "harvest" emails from message boards, web sites etc. Those names are then put on mailing lists and sold to people who sell porn, junk etc. Hence your email full of spam emails. So think before you allow your email to go on a web site or message board. Sometimes its better to imbed it in your message, makes it just a bit harder for them to harvest. Lots of dishonest people out there doing their best to get your money - any way they can. So don't hesitate to use that delete key. Never respond to emails that come in offering this junk - not even to ask them to take you off. It just confirms that this is a live email. Sometimes you can forward it to the ISP from which it originated. Although they want to see the "actual" sender and not the person you see on the header in your email. Use the delete KEY alot and just NEVER open an email or click on URL's in the email if you don't know the sender. Sad state of our society when dishonesty is so out of hand that honest people have to put up with this garbage! I have a suggestion as well. I use Incredimail as my email program (instead of outlook express), it's a lot like outlook express but it offers a block and bounce back to sender option. I have found I get a lot less junk email by using this program for my email. Once you block then bounce the emails back to them they believe it's a bad email address, therefor they stop sending it email. I am not sure where you can download it for those who would like to try this but you can look up incredimail in any search engine and get the site, it's free and they also have a pay version, but I only use the free one and it's great. For those who read the list via the web, your best bet is to just not click on links.
