Karen, The death certificates are arranged by the year it was filed, then by certificate number. Sometimes they were not filed the same year as the death. If you are using Rootsweb to get the certificate numbers they list the "death volume" which is the year it was filed. Look for last name ....Childs name and mothers name and then fathers. Most times it will not list fathers names when looking up information on the internet. When I looked up mine.....I went by last name, then the childs name.
