    3. Forwarded FYI - The Library of Congress' Serial & Government Publications Division is pleased to announce the release of a new addition to the National Digital Library - the online collection The Stars and Stripes: The American Soldiers' Newspaper of World War I, 1918-1919, available on the American Memory website at: http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/sgphtml/sashtml/. At the direction of General John J. Pershing, The Stars and Stripes newspaper was published in France by the United States Army from February 8, 1918 to June 13, 1919. By early 1918, American forces were dispersed throughout the western front, often mixed at the unit level with British, French and Italian forces. The primary mission of The Stars and Stripes was to provide these scattered troops with a sense of unity and an understanding of their part in the overall war effort. The eight-page weekly featured news from home, poetry, cartoons and sports news, with a staff that included journalists Alexander Woollcott, Harold Wallace Ross and Grantland Rice. On borrowed printing presses, using a delivery network that combined trains, automobiles (including three Cadillacs) and one motorcycle, the staff produced a newspaper with a circulation that peaked at 526,000 copies. This new online collection presents the complete run - 71 weeks - of the World War I edition. The collection also includes special presentations that discuss the newspaper's content: its illustrations and advertising, its publication of soldiers' poetry, its coverage of women. Brief biographies of editorial staff members and their later careers hint at the level of journalistic talent within The Stars and Stripes. A timeline and map place the newspaper within the greater historical and geographical context of the war. The collection was processed with optical character recognition (OCR) software to allow users to search the full text of the newspaper for a word or phrase. This feature expands the collection's usefulness to historians and genealogists researching names and details that do not appear in the headlines. The Stars and Stripes collection served as a pilot project in the development of search and display capabilities to be utilized on future releases of historic newspapers. Please direct all general inquiries to: http://www.loc.gov/rr/askalib/ask-contactus2.html

The very best time to see anything from Pilot Rock is in the fall when the trees have all turned colors and the wisps of smoke from tobacco barns, scattered across the surrounding land, is rising here and there and the air is brisk and the sun warm to your face. Sitting up there with the earth in view, you feel like you are atop the world and the patches of farmland remind one of being up in a small plane, but with the windows open and you can see the Jeff Davis monument very well. Can you tell I speak from experience? Please come back and visit the gift shop, Pilot Rock and Christian County again. Jean ~~

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/mAB.2ACE/2228.1.1 Message Board Post: I have often thought that my Harrison was connected to the family you mention, except MY Harrison’s birthdate does not match the birthdate of YOUR Harrison. In the 1850 census, Harrison is listed as being ‘28’, in the 1860 census, Harrison is listed as being ‘41’. So, he was either born about 1822 or 1819. I realize that using the census as a gauge to age is not always the best, but his birth date is way off from that of the Harrison you mention. Also, his tombstone says he died ‘aged 47’. If he were born in 1806, then he wouldn’t be alive in 1860 if he was YOUR Harrison and MY Harrison WAS alive in 1860. Something that makes me think that this family is connected to your family is that Harrison’s widow, Nancy Monday Puckett, has a ‘Matthew Puckett’ living with her in 1870. I find elsewhere that this Matthew is supposed to be the son of your Isaac Puckett. So, whether or not MY Harrison and YOUR Harrison are the same person, I do think that the families’ are connected.

    3. Do you Puckett surname researchers have any information on the ancestry of Susannah PUCKETT? Susannah was born ca 1762-64 [in Maryland according to the 1850 census]. She married James CALVIN as his 2nd wife on 26 Mar 1788 in Mercer Co., KY although they resided in Nelson Co., KY until about 1801 when they removed to Christian Co., KY where James died in 1803. Susannah continued to reside in Christian Co., KY and married 2nd there on 30 Nov 1830 to James Stuart. She and James Stuart removed to Wayne Co., IL where James Stuart died in 1845. Before 1850, Susannah had returned to Christian Co., KY and was living with her son, James Calvin [Jr.]. She died between 1854 and 1860, probably in Christian Co. although I've not found a record of her death/burial. Susannah had 9 Calvin children by her marriage to James CALVIN. Any help/clues would be greatly appreciated. Marilyn R. 3. We brought our Austic son, Phillip, into that small, tiny gift shop when he was around three (1974). He did not yet speak and rarely responded to our verbal "warnings" - it took only about ten seconds to realize that we had made a mistake bringing him inside that tiny "easy-to-reach-the-expensive-stuff" shop! Time to go, he balked and refused to leave -- I had to grab him and carry him out while he screamed bloody murder and everyone stared at the cruel man (me) with Phillip kicking and screaming. I am confident we have not yet returned. With a bigger shop and a 34 year old Phillip, maybe we can stop by next year! I would like to ask the more experienced Christian County "explorers" if the JD Monument can be seen from the top of Pilot Rock on a clear day? Can you see Hopkinsville? I have climbed Pilot Rock, but with my fear of heights combined with a very windy & hazy day I did not see much! Thank goodness my research efforts in Christian County have always been very rewarding and successful! <grining> John G. West, descendent of the Thomas West, Jr. (born before 1744, died 1821) who came to Christian Co., KY no later than 1810. Thomas, Sr.>Thomas, Jr.>Charles H.>Jesse>William Ellis (wife: Cincinnati O. A much nicer one than the tiny one that had for a long time. Have you ever traveled to the top of the monument? It's not bad at all.
