Folks, this is a genealogy site for assisting each other with research. Lets not turn it into a political talk show.
Time out! Since we all know there is no such thing as a "Civil" war, lets all be civil and not have a war! There are about 300 people on this list. Everyone be nice and respect others. Please no more comments on the list! Julie
A comment on that War: I attended a Civil War re-eanactment a couple of years ago, and a young kid in front of me asked his dad, Which ones are the bad guys?" I had to speak up . . . I said, "None of them. They were all Americans." On "rehashing" history": Santayana's remark about how if we don't learn from history's mistakes, we're destined to repeat them was wise cousel for all of us. Personally, I don't think finding out about how our ancestors fit into different historical settings can be thought of as just "rehashing". It makes us understand our ancestors better, see them as real people instead of dry names and dates, and shows us our links to those events. It might even make us more tolerable of all ideas and philosophies when we realize none of us--our ancestors OR ourselves--have been isolated islands of humanity in our lives here on earth.

Yes, it is truly a shame that we cannot be adults here and thank Mr. Biggs for his invitation and let this go at that. It would be very nice if we could all attend those sessions we were invited to join and voice our opinions there, but I know it is impossible to do that. So lets let this drop. I have found that politics and religion are not subjects of any peaceful discussions and neither is the Civil War, as it is most often referred to. Let's all try to do this and not continue? The List Administrator is extremely busy at this time of year. Thank you, Jean C.

I hope my opinion does not anger anyone, as it is not meant to, but I see no reason to keep rehashing history. It happened---we were not there--we don't know all the facts of anything that happened in history---we only know the effects from things that occured. All the rehashing does, is make a division in people--family legends, whether right, or misconstrued---has no place in the way people are stuggling to bring peace in our time. We could grieve, or fight over history, or we can lay those *daggers* by the wayside, and learn to live now---in peace. I too descend from southern families and was also born in what was Indian Territory (OK) & is now a part of the south. Some of the older members of my family always said the South will arise again. This has not happened in over a 100 years and will not happen, We are one Nation and United We Stand. In my 40 years of research I have found that I also have northers ancestors. I am from some of the first families that came to the New World and also some of the Native American families. It does not matter where are parents or grandparents were born or even where we were born we are all American. The Civil War was one of the most horrible wars in our history, brother against brother, father against son, there were some terrible things that happened from the Northern Army and some terrible things that happened from the Southern Army, but this is normal for any war. Study what our founding fathers went through to make us the nation that we are. Do we hate England? no, she is our Mother Country. We should not hate the North or the South for what happened so many years ago. Kay

Back in the 1980's, my husband and I visited a 3rd cousin of his in North Carolina. Ruth, our hostess, and her husband took us on a tour of Fayetteville to point out former family homes, etc. The tour included a stop at the Presbyterian Church which had a small museum.
