Gainsville, KY Apr 12 - Thomas Murrell, a leading farmer of this county, residing 10 miles east of here, while attending to his stock this morning about daylight, was shot throught the heart twice by his farm hand, Frank Crews. Mrs. Murrell heard her husband's agonizing screams and ran out to the barn to assist him. Crews at once grabbed her around the waist and fired two bulletts into her head, causing her instant death. The double murderer then robbed Murrell's body of a sum of money, mounted ahorse and departed for the home of Edward Murrell, a son of the dead man, residing two miles up the lane, saying he was going there to kill Edward and his family. The cause of the murder was a quarrel over wages. Fifty farmers immediately organized a posse and armed with Winchesters, began a search for the murdered. This is all there was. regards, Colleen Lill

Hi, I have a death record on Tolbert A./A. Tolbert Akins who died Oct 19, 1921 at Christian Co. He lived in Hopkins and is buried in Webster. The death record tells what he died from, but doesn't give parents. Would there be an obit in a local newspaper that someone could hunt down for me? I feel this guy somehow fits into my Eakins clan. Surnames: Laffoon, Parker, Fowler Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/mAB.2ACE/2399 Message Board Post: MRS. LAFFOON DEAD After Six Months of Painful Illness She Passes Away. Though not unexpected, the death of Mrs. Hattie LAFFOON, wife of the Hon Polk LAFFOON, which occurred at 5 o'clock Saturday morning, was a severe shock to the people of Madisonville and Hopkins county, by whom she was generally known and beloved. Some six months ago she was stricken with paralysis, and her cause has been hopeless and pitiable until death ended her sufferings. Her funeral occurred Sunday afternoon, Rev. Sam FOWLER officiating, after which her remains were laid to rest in Odd Fellow's Cemetery. Mrs. LAFFOON was the daughter of Wm. B. PARKER and was born in Christian county October 27, 1844, and was consequently in the fifty-first year of her age. She was united in marriage to Polk LAFFOON on the 15th day of December, 1869. Four children were born to her, two sons and two daughters, namely, Guy, Lena, Emma and Polk. At the time of the sad death of Guy, her condition was so critical that it was thought wise not to impart the knowledge of his death to her and she died ignorant of the fact of his death. The other three children survive her. Up to the time she suffered the paralytic stroke Mrs. LAFFOON was the picture of health and cheeriness. Her disposition was sweet and her ways winnning. She was the life of every circle or gathering in which she moved and had a kind an cheerful word for everyone. She was the especial favorite of the young people, in whom she took so great an interest and whose home was the scene of so many enjoyable gatherings in time past. And in her death nearly everyone who had the pleasure to be well acquainted with her feels a sense of bereavement. In this the crowning period of his misfortunes and bereavement, her husband has the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community, who like unto his lamented partner in life who has just departed, is personally beloved by all who know him and the sense of his great loss and afflictions which have crowded upon him of late is keenly felt by his friends, any one of whom would gladly lift some of the burdens from a friend. After months of suffering he passed into the Great Beyond early last Saturday morning. Mr. COTTON was one of the well known, highly respected and much beloved citizens of Madisonville. He was born and reared on a farm in Christian county, where he had but few natural advantages, but being a man of will and energy he made for himself a name among the people. For a while after reaching his majority he engaged in teaching school and in that profession was quite successful. It was not long, however, before he engaged in buying and putting up tobacco. For several years he has been at the head of the firm of COTTON & RAMSEY as tobacco dealers. In this he has made a comfortable fortune and leaves his wife and son a handsome estate. His money was all made in a legitimate way. No man ever had any dealings with Mr. COTTON who was not impressed with the entire honesty and uprightness of the man. It has been the good fortune of the writer to have had large deali! ngs with the deceased in times past, and we can say that no man ever was more honorable in these dealings than was Mr. COTTON. He was indeed and in truth a christian gentleman. He had for years been a leading member in the Christian church at this place. He aided the cause which he espoused with both time and his money. As a husband, father and neighbor he set an example that might well be imitated by others. The remains were taken Sunday morning to the church in which he had so long and so often worshipped, where a short funeral service was conducted by the Rev. Sam FOWLER, the pastor, after which all that was mortal of this good man was deposited by kind friends in the Odd Fellow's cemetery. Peace to the memory of this good man. Surnames: Cotton, Fowler Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/mAB.2ACE/2395 Message Board Post: Minos R. COTTON Once more has the messenger of mortality given painful proof that the human family is doomed to death--that, there is "one event unto all"--and that exalted virtue, polished by personal accomplishments and crowned with piety, must yield to the common lot. The death of our beloved Brother whose name stands at the head of this notice, is but an additional evidence of this melancholy truth. Brother COTTON was born in Christian county, Ky., June 21st, 1841, and died at his home in Madisonville, Ky., December 28th, 1894, aged fifty-three years and six months. He came to this town in 1875; shortly afterwards he was elected as deacon of the congregation, which office he filled until the year 1888, when he was chosen to the eldership, which office he filled to the satisfaction of those whom he served and with honor to himself up to his death. From the time of his conversion which was in early life, to the close of his life, he adorned his profession by a life ordered aright, and a c! onversation which ever indicated purity of heart. For many years. Bro. COTTON has been in delicate health, and at times suffered intensely, but no word of complaint did he utter--always saying the Lord knew what was best for us. While he was ever diligent in business, he was ever fervent in spirit in serving the Lord. Whatsoever he did prospered. Hence he died surrounded by every comfort that wealth and kind friends and a devoted wife and son could command for his relief. A more devoted family to each other would be hard to find. Truly our sister has lost a devoted husband and the son a most loving father, the church one of its most faithful and liberal supporters, the community one of its most enterprising and honest citizens, but each and all, with one accord, say our loss is his gain.
