Dickenson, was born in 1922; and they went to Little River Church of Christ in Christian Co. He would probably know whether there was a Church of Christ in Hopkinsville at the time. I'm relatively sure there was; the one there has been around for a very long time; and the Reformation, which established many Churches of Christ in the area of VA/Ky/TN happened before the Civil War. I'll ask whether he's heard of your grandfather, and whether he knows the start date of that congregation.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/mAB.2ACE/2440 Message Board Post: Proverbs 1:17 "Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird" Allow me to speak freely here. The secret to catching a bird is to set a trap and using materials that will cause the bird to blindly walk in without knowing the danger all around him. As a kid growing up on the farm I remember once making a crude trap by using an old wooden apple box. It was simple yet deadly, however the key to my trap was not so much in the materials but the food. I put out the grain in such a way that the bird was enticed into its trap. The key was to know the nature of the bird and use any and all means to lure it forward. The rest was history. When we lack discernment and wisdom and turn a deaf ear to sound doctrine and godly counsel we as the bird in my story runs with both feet to the net. Men lay snares daily to catch some one who is impulsive and lacking in understanding. If the truth was to be known our own hearts are our worst enemies. When we lack discernment and wisdom we are as the bird that see's not the trap being set. When the need of our heart is used against us and we follow after grain particles then it is only a matter of time before we find ourselves ensnared into a situation that will bring heart ache and grief. But it does not have to be that way. I know there are those on the internet who invade community chat rooms and promise much in line of liberating freedom but yet they are mere tares among the wheat. They so identify by appearances that from all outward indications things look fine but in spiritual reality it is a carefully set trap. The key is to not be impulsive and reactionary but inste! ad to know the Word and have Truth firmly in place as ones safety net. Jesus made reference to the Holy Spirit as being the comforter and the one who leads and guides us in all truth. Jesus also said that He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. So the comforter (Holy Spirit) is given to us to be our discerning eyes in sight of them who spread nets before us. If we have been taught to reject truth then how can we ever hope to avoid nets? Our own hearts will so direct us that we walk blindly right into the nets and laugh all the way as if it is no big deal. But afterwards when our world comes crashing down and the exits are shut off then what will you do? God has given us brothers and sisters for our own good in the body of Christ. To turn a deaf ear to counsel and advice is another example of running full speed ahead to the trap. Will we ever learn the lesson here in proverbs or will we go from net to net until we are so burnt out that we can no longer see for the night has ta! ken away our vision? Spend time in the Word and pray for truth and protection. Be not unwise but wise in knowing the Will of God in Christ Jesus. Messenger/servant (William)

Modern-day creation scientists are divided into many sub-groups according to their interpretation of the word "day" in Genesis, chapter 1. 1. Young Earth Creationists: Interpret the Genesis account of creation literally, the "day" in Genesis 1 is a standard 24 hour day. 2. Old Earth Creationists: Do not assign a specific length to a Genesis 1 "day" but believe god created earth and all its life forms millions of years ago. 3. Gap Theory Creationists: They believe a very long time interval elapsed between the first and second days of creation. They believe that the second to sixth days proceeded as told in the bible. 4. Day-Age Creationists: They define each of the "days" in Genesis 1 as referring to a specific time interval: 1000 years is a common interval. RE: Peter 3:8 ".........one day with the lord as a thousand years." As described above, creationists hold different interpretations of the passages in Genesis 1. They use the creation story and the great flood as the foundations for their beliefs. Most are evangelical or fundamentalist Christians who believe in the literal truth of the book of Genesis. Some are followers of other faiths who believe that their sacred texts of creation are literally true. Most look at evolution as denying their gods rightful roles as creator. If they abandon their faith in the accuracy of their sacred texts, than many of their traditional beliefs would be threatened. Is it Science? Absolutely not! Scientific creationism is not science because it is not based on observation and testing. Rather it is based on religious dogma. Examples of human civilizations are not found with dinosaurs and other ancient forms of life. This perhaps is the best indicator that life evolved over a period of time, rather than 6 days. Some of the many indicators that show contradiction and inconsistency in the Genesis story are: 1. Some plants depend on birds and ants for propagation. If plants were created on day 3 and birds and plants on day 5 and 6 and if each day is equal to 1000 years, then some plants would have had to survived without propagation for thousands of years. 2. Fossil record clearly shows that land animals developed before birds. In Genesis that account claims the opposite. 3. According to scientific data, stars existed long before earth came into existence, while in Genesis 1:16 asserts stars were created after the earth. 4. There is some 10 million species known of insects alone on our planet. There is an enormous number of species of birds, reptiles, and mammals. Can it be reasonably believed that Noah and his family could gather all those millions of animals in their ark? These are just a very small portion of evidence that shows the inconsistencies and contradictions in the bible. Scientists concentrate on what, how, where and when of history. Researchers in many fields from Astronomy to Geology, from Biology to Paleontology have used this method; most agree that the universe, the earth, and the earth's life forms have evolved over billions of years. To believe that evolution is how we got here is to believe that much of the bible does not represent the literal truth. In the minds of religious fundamentalists that cannot even be considered! Also, many find that the idea that our species developed from less complex life forms is repugnant. I think this makes many people less likely to accept evolution as reality, because they don't make a clear distinction between the appeal of an idea and it's authenticity. Another factor is that they find it more difficult to accept ideas that force then to rethink long held beliefs. I believe that the lat! e Carl Sagan said it best, "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence." There is no extraordinary evidence that supports the extraordinary claims in the bible, just folklore and myths of old. The human race no longer needs this. Just as children grow up and learn the truth about the tooth fairy and Santa Clause, the human race needs to mature and learn the truth about the existence of god and the accuracy of the bible. burn in hell cocksucker! aol

WOOTEN is well remembered by many of our people and especially by those at Providence where he used to run a blind tiger. In fact Tom never liked to stay in any town other than where prohibition was supposed to prevail. He has had large experience with the courts on account of his supposed illicit traffic in "red licker." Bill BRAME is the man who a few years ago shot and killed conductor LEMON, of the Hopkinsville accommodation, for which he got only 2 years in the penitentiary at Nashville. About 15 years ago he shot and killed Sheriff BEAUMONT at Clarksville, Tenn., and by some means managed to escape both the pen and the gallows. It is said that he also at one time killed a negro. BRAME and WOOTEN had lately been at outs over some matter, and the shooting was no surprise to the people. BRAME met a son of WOOTEN's the day before the killing and threatened the life of the boy and also sent word that he would kill WOOTEN on sight. On Thursday BRAME rode up to the grocery kept by WOOTEN, with a drawn pistol and at once the shooting began. BRAME was shot twice and died in a few minutes. WOOTEN was not touched. WOOTEN went at once to Hopkinsville and surrendered himself to the authorities. If all reports be true he was certainly justifiable in doing the killing. LACY DEAD THE VENERABLE MINISTER OF THE GOSPEL PASSES AWAY At an Early Hour Sunday Morning After a Brief Illness at His Home Near This City--Had Been a Minister of the Baptist Church for Over Half a Century---The Funeral Yesterday The people of Madisonville were not surprised Sunday morning when they heard the news that the Rev. N. LACY had passed away during the night. He had been seriously ill for about two weeks with grip and pneumonia, and his friends had been warned of the fact that the beloved preacher could not recover, that still death might come at any time. Mr. LACY was born eighty years ago last October in Christian county, this state, where he lived for many years. It was there, if we mistake not, where he was licensed and ordained to preach. He had been engaged in the ministry as a Baptist preacher for more than half a century. He has for many years been a citizen of Hopkins county, and at the time of his death was living at his own home near Madisonville. Some twenty-five or thirty years ago Mr. LACY was well known as a teacher, and for many years he followed this profession in connection with that of the ministry. In all the callings and professions of life in which Mr. LACY engaged he always acquitted himself with honor to that calling and with credit to himself. He was indeed a noble and honest man. He was upright in all his dealings with his fellow man, and had the good will of all who knew him. He led a useful life and at the end of the journey closed his day at peace with all mankind. He was the father of a large family of children. Two sons, Mr. Will LACY, of Evansville, and Dr. John LACY, of Nashville, and three daughters, Mrs. Dr. H.D. BOYLE and Mrs. C.H. YOUNG, of Madisonville and Mrs. L.M. RICE survive him. He also leaves a wife his sacred memory. These are all good people and they sorrow for the demise of a kind father and an affectionate husband. The remains were taken to Odd Fellow's Cemetery yesterday, where they were laid by the side of loved ones gone before. (Source: Madisonville Hustler, Tue. Hello, Would anyone know anything about Daniel Rogers who lived in Christian Co. in 1810? I'm trying to find out who his wife and children were and parents if anyone knows. There is an obituary in the Nashville Christian Advocate for him that states: Daniel Rogers born Granville Co., NC Aug 15, 1755 was a Rev War Veteran. Moved to Chester Co SC but moved on to Christian Co KY in 1809 then to Henry Co TN in 1822 and then to Ripley MS in 1846 when he died in the residence of his son Wiley Rogers, March 1, 1849. Any information would be very helpful. Thank You, Eileen Rogers Mullins nemullins@msn.com
