Surnames: Courtney, Williams Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/mAB.2ACE/2469 Message Board Post: Hi, I have a Nancy Jane Courtney that I need information on. All I know about her is that on 29 Dec 1859 she married in Hopkins Co. to John H. Williams. They had two children a son named Thomas and a daughter named Leana/Leander E. and the family called Leana, Aunt Bet, so she may have gone by her middle name. I found a Nancy j. Courtney in 1850 Christian Co. at the age of 12, making her birth around 1838, which is close to the correct time, for my Nancy Jane. She is in the household of her father Thomas Courtney and mother Hester. I also found in Muhlenberg Co. a Thomas Courtney that married Apr 1836 to Hester Biggerstaff. This one could be pusing it. The parents mentioned above in Christian County., in the census states they had a son at the age of 14 which would make his birth in 1836. I don't know if any of this above information connects to my Nancy Jane Courtney or not. If you should have any idea or can provide some help, I sure would appreciate it. Thank You, Sheila

Surnames: Alexander, Frost, Showers, Lunsford Classification: Biography Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/mAB.2ACE/2466 Message Board Post: J.T. ALEXANDER & CO. This firm was established in the fall of 1883. Mr. ALEXANDER, at that time, opened a small stock of gents' furnishing goods in the small room adjoining the postoffice. Six months afterward, he rented the corner building now occupied by FROST & SHOWERS, and put in a complete stock of dry goods, clothing, etc. The business increased and prospered abundantly, and in 1888 larger quarters became a necessity. J.H. LUNSFORD erected a large, handsome two-story brick store building, especially for Mr. ALEXANDER, and for four years the business has been carried on at this stand. This firm carries a $30,000 stock of dry goods, clothing, boots and shoes, hats, furnishing goods, carpets, etc. Every cent's worth of this stock was paid for in spot cash. It is one of the most complete stocks to be found anywhere, not excepting many of the larger cities. The success of this firm shows what pluck, energy and business acumen will accomplish. Mr. ALEXANDER was born in Christian county. He start! ed in life as errand boy for the Hecla Coal Company and was subsequently made book-keeper and assistant manager of the business. He saved sufficient means out of his salary to enable him to start a small business here in 1883. Mr. ALEXANDER is a firm believer in the efficacy of printer's ink and uses it liberally. His success he attributes greatly to advertising. (Source: Madisonville Hustler, Fri., Feb. 24, 1893)

There was only one edition of the paper that was saved from 1898 that contained only this one obituary below. There were some biographies also in that edition. There are no surviving copies for the year 1899. The Feb. 24, 1893 edition contains dozens of biographies and etched portraits of some of the prominent men in the county. At this time, I will begin posting those and, once that's completed, this project will have come to a close. I appreciate the many thank you notes and words of encouragement I've received from people all over the country. Happy Hunting, Phil - Madisonville, Ky.

Mr. William KISTNER, perhaps the oldest man in this county, died at his residence in North Madisonville, Wednesday night. He was about 86 years of age and had for several years been a citizen of this town. He came from Christian county, where he has a brother living, who is also quite aged. Mr. KISTNER had for years been a member of the Christian church. He was indeed a christian, both in name and practice. The writer had known him for several years and for the now dead man, we always had the very greatest respect. His life was one of the very best, the most pure and blameless that we almost ever knew. He was a man of integrity and was as honest a man as ever lived. He leaves a wife who is well stricken in years. We are under the impression that he left no children. The remains were taken yesterday afternoon to the Odd Fellow's cemetery where they were laid to rest. Her mother Catherine Sims gave consent for the marriage. John B. C. and Amanda's son William married Fannie Hale, a sister to my husband's direct line. That is why I have the info in my data base. The Christian Co marriages also show a Catherine Woodburn marrying William A. Sims 27 Dec 1825. Catherine is in the 1850 Christian Co. Census with several children in her household. Living close is Jas Woodburn and Mary who would be old enough to be her parents. Hope this helps.
