Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/mAB.2ACE/2484.1.1 Message Board Post: Thank you Debbie. Where can I find this book "Cemetery Records of Northern Section of Christian Co., KY"? I live out of state. I too have a lot of family buried there Riley, Reece, Oliver, and other related families like Menser, Croft, Knight, Brown, Parker, Winstead, McCord, Cantrell, Campin, Hart, Simpson, Davenport, Eli, Brummett, in surrounding area cemeteries. My people lived in the Lantrip area before the relocation buy out for the Pennyrile Park. I was born in that area but grew up out of state. I spent many summer vacations with my grandpa in KY. Was Evie listed as Elvie Oliver or was that a type error? Hope to hear from you soon. Viola

Markers are there, but unfortunately it is in a long row of sandstone markers that time has wiped away the info to the point of being unreadable and no one knows which stone is the right one. Anna Hunsaker Meador published the "Cemetery Records of Northern Section of Christian Co., Ky." in 1976, the cemetery was copied Aug. 21, 1966. "Elvie Oliver (no rock) age 80 years and 2 days" is listed. The funeral marker must have still been there at the time the cemetery was copied. The book should be able to at least give you a general idea as to the location of the grave.

    1. Re: [KYCHRIST] Hawkins Cemetery Records info needed !!!!!!!
    2. 417swyers@msn.com writes: Wouldn't the Historical Society or county have to have some kind of records for the burials? No. There was no Historical Society at that time, I'm almost certain. Not many cared or had the time to do genealogy as they were trying to make a living for large families and deal with WW II and rationing of food and necessary supplies to survive. The records would have been kept by the cemetery, maybe. It was not required, except to have the graves marked in order not to bury someone in another's purchased plot, where those persons would have a deed for the lots purchased. It seems that when a grave was marked by a rock or handmade marker, it was assumed that would be there forever, much like the old land deeds that stated the beginning of said property began at the large sycamore tree and continued on to a red oak and so on. It was not the cemetery's place to see that all graves had a marker as it is the same today. The family was responsible for that. Many weren't able to buy a marker and there are thousands of graves in cemeteries all over the country without markers. Granted, some kept records. They sometimes vanished through the years by fire, neglect, water damage...any number of reasons. Many people in the 1930s and 40s could not read or write, but worked as the keeper of small, country cemeteries, keeping up with the burials and doing a fine job of it. When they passed on themselves, so did much of the knowledge they had kept. As for the funeral homes, they were bought and sold often in the 40s and 50s. There was no law that they had to turn over their records to the new owner. Some did, some didn't. I'm fairly certain that there is a notice in the local newspaper of your g g grandmother's obituary, if you can ask someone to be kind enough to look it up for you. However, if you are only searching for the spot in which she is buried, I wish you luck. It is possible that someone might have the records of burial plots. In my cemetery book, it has this: Elvie Oliver, (no rock) Age 80 years and 2 days. The name is listed between a Angeline Jewel and a Mrs. Myrtle Cooper. Mrs. Cooper is listed as having no stone, but she is distant kin of mine and she does now have a marker. Perhaps your g g grandmother is buried between these two people. I rarely get down there but would be happy to check for you when I go again. Regards, Jean ~ ~
