For several years he had been in failing health, and for the last year has been in a dangerous state. All that skilled physicians could suggest and loving hands could do to stay the course of his disease, but in vain. In disposition, he was quiet, modest, unassuming and gentle, ever kind and courteous in his manner, he bound his friends to him by bands of steel. He was quite a devoted servant of the Lord and loved by all who knew him. In all the relations of life he filled his part well. He leaves a wife and several children to mourn his death. Let us be patient These severe allictions not from the ground arise, But oftimes celestial benedictions Assume this dark disguise. (Source: Earlington Bee, Thur., Aug. 30, 1894)

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/mAB.2ACE/2550.1.1.2.1 Message Board Post: In the 1850 Christian Co. Census Joseph Cordier is listed as a merchant, born in France. His wife is Serena A. Brasher, married March 1847. I do not know of any direct connection to the Cavanaughs except they lived in the same general vicinity as the Whites and the Canavaughs. In the 1870 Christian Co. census Joseph Cavanaugh, age 22, single, is living in the Cordier home and listed as a blacksmith. In the 1880 Christian Co. census Joseph Cavanaugh, a blacksmith, is married to Martha A. White and they have four children. Six houses away is Martha White, widow of William M. White, and mother-in-law of Joseph Cavanaugh. As stated in a prior post, Joseph Cavanaugh and his brother William are both buried in the White Cemetery near Kelly, KY. Both of these men married daughters of William M. White and Martha Long White. William M. White (1803-1855)is also buried there. Both Martha A. Whte Cavanaugh (died 1933) and her mother Martha Long White. are buried in Hopkinsville in the Riverside Cemetery. --I don't know why, except perhaps after they became widows they moved into town. Martha Long White is listed as a "midwife" in the 1880 census. I have more information on the White line if you are interested.

Accordiing to what you found, her husband was buried in the White Cemetery near Kelly. Was that a family cemetery(White) and if so why would Joseph be there and Martha, who was originally a White, be in Riverside? I am very excited to get this info, thank you for all your help!

Cavanaugh who married Martha White on 4 April 1873. He is buried in the White Cem. near Kelly, Christian Co. KY, and this is what Mrs. Medor listed in the North Christian Co. Cemetery Book. J. W. Cavanaugh, born 29 May 1847, died 1 March 1891. This is more than likely a typo, or Mrs. Medor could not read the stone and put 1891 instead of 1894. William Cavanaugh (1835-1877) is also buried there. He was a brother of J. W. and married Nancy White, sister of Martha White, wife of Joseph W. Cavanaugh.
