    1. [KYCHRIST] Using Rootsweb
    2. J. Jamison
    3. In regard to the person using Rootsweb to lead people to a link, let me mention that I have recently been getting spam from people who use the same names as the lists I am on. For instance, I am on McCord, Morse, Calvert, lists. I get e-mail from people who are using these names and when I open the letter it is an advertisement and sometimes it is for porn sites. I mentioned this to a friend and he said that it's possible that people who want e-mail addresses for advertising purposes might be getting them from genealogy sites. All I know is that lately I have been getting a lot of spam with my family's names in the "From" column. So, another thing of beware of. Juanita At 09:18 AM 3/27/04 -0500, you wrote: >Diann, > >No! 3. Diann, No! Rootsweb would never send this type of message. The person who sent it probably subscribed to Rootsweb mailing lists and sent the message to all Kentucky counties. Mail list administrators removed the subscriber, but not before the message was posted. You should be cautious about clicking on links in messages unless you are sure they are legitimate. Just one visit to the site can cause a cookie to download to your computer without your knowledge. You might receive unwanted emails, viruses, trojans. If you are in doubt about any message, you should probably check with the list administrator before visiting the site. 3. I wanted everyone to know that we won this round of the fight for vital records in Kentucky. The Senate sent the bill back to committee, effectively killing it. Many thanks to all of you for calling and emailing the Senators. Together we can make a difference. THANKS! Sharon

    3. YES, do not visit the website listed in the email. I have removed it AGAIN from the message board and hopefully Rootsweb will ban his user. Unfortunately they come back with different (fake) email addresses. 1. [KYCHRIST] Orten, Jackson and Sackenfeather 1870-1880
    2. Brett F. Woods
    3. Another researcher sent me the following newspaper article: “In 1873, a wagon train arrived in Christian County. It had come from East Tennessee and was made up of relatives, among whom were Roberts, Whites, Murphys, and Ortens. Young Jimmy Orten, age 16, had ridden his horse all the way. His parents, the James Ortens, were members of this group. James lived on his part most of his long life. In addition to farming, he owned and operated sawmills and threshing machines. He served as magistrate for many years and was know as "Squire" Jim to differentiate him from "Reed" Jim and "Black" Jim - all James Ortens. He was a strong Republican and in his younger days spoke of Democrats as "stinking" Democrats! On April 29, 1880, he married Mary Frances Jackson, daughter of William Jackson and Margaret Sackenfeather.  When they married Jim could not write.  Fannie had some education so their Sundays were spent in her "sitting" him copies until he not only wrote but was a whiz in mathematics.  The county schools were in session for just a few months each year so for several years they hired a teacher to stay with several months so their children could have extra instruction. They were both life-long members of the Christian Church, he becoming a member at Sweetwater, Tennessee, both were members at Macedonia and Ninth Street Church, Hopkinsville. Three children were born to them: James William, Mar. 5, 1881; Ora Mae (Brown), June 24, 1882; and Minnie Margaret (Durham) (Warren), Feb. 17, 1884.  In addition to their three children they reared his nephew, Robert Stephenson, and their granddaughter, Dixie Marie Brown, daughter of Ora and Jarred. After his son Willie died in 1910 (buried at Castleberry) he lost his enthusiasm for farming and retired. About 1912 they moved to Hopkinsville where their home was the gathering place for North Christian farmers who stayed there when delivering tobacco or when hospitalization was needed. Jim died on his birthday, Dec. 3, 1938. Fannie lived with Ora until her death on April 26, 1949. Both were buried at Castleberry." (Kentucky New Era, Christian County Newspaper) William Jackson is first found enumerated on page 509 of the 1870 Caldwell County KY Census, Princetown Township. He is married to Sarah J. Curry (b. Bedford TN, 1839), the daughter of Reuben Curry. Sarah Curry is William's second wife for, in 1870, the family is enumerated as follows: Jackson, W.T. 41 GA (Carpenter) Sarah J. 39 TN (Keeping House) M.F. Female 17 GA (Attending School) ~ this would be the Mary Francis who married James Orten..later enumeration in 1880, 1900, 1910 and 1920 (with James Orten) indicate her birth in GA. A.D. Male 9 GA (Attending School) M.L. Female 1 KY [This child's name is Minnie, as William and Sarah Curry's first known child] I am attempting to locate precisely where in Georgia William Jackson originated and to do so I need to identify what the precise spelling of "Sackenfeather" (his first wife's name) might be, as a Google query under “Sackenfeather” returns absolutely nothing…nor do queries in Ancestry.com or Genealogy.com. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Brett F. Woods Santa Fe, New Mexico

    1. [KYCHRIST] Kentucky Vital Records bill update
    2. Sharon Pike
    3. The Senate did not vote on the vital records bill yesterday. (HB100) They passed it over and did not vote on it. It still could come up for a vote before the sessions ends. To make your feelings known, contact the Senate: Out of State 502-564-8100 In Kentucky: 1-800-372-7181 You can leave a message for ALL Senators. If you do not live in Kentucky tell them that this bill affects your right to information about your family who died in Kentucky. Other states have solved the identity theft issue by issuing certificates that are non-certified and stamped "For Genealogical Use Only - Not For Identification." Bill Status Line: 1-866-301-9004 HB 100

    2. Sharon Pike
    3. I've gotten so many requests that I'd better clarify how to get copies of the non-certified death certificates for 1911 - 1953 from the Kentucky Historical Society. You have to GO to the Kentucky Historical Society in Frankfort to copy them yourself for .30. You can also request a library reference person to copy it for you by mail or online. The charge is $5 if you are in-state or $12 if you are out-of-state. If you want more than one certificate use the Staff Researcher service which is hourly. $25 per hour (or $15 if you are a member of the Kentucky Historical Society.) They can copy several in an hour. Please us the online index to get the certificate number and year that it was filed. (usually this is the same year as the death.) One of the easiest to use is the Kentucky Vital Records Project of the Kentucky Gen Web. http://www.rootsweb.com/~kygenweb/kvrp/ You can order the certificates online with a credit card from the Kentucky Historical Society. Go to http://history.ky.gov Click on "Shop the 1792 Store" Click on "research" By mail with a check in advance: Kentucky Historical Society Library 100 W. Broadway Frankfort, KY 40601
