Cyrus M. BROWN, Christian county's representative in the Kentucky Legislature, died at 11 o'clock Sunday night from dysentery at this room on Court street. The community was shocked and grieved, for the end was not expected. There was not a more popular man in the county. In North Christian, his name was a household word. As a stump speaker, he had few peers in the South. He was a very talented man, and a poet and writer of no mean ability. He was born near Crofton in 1848. His father was the Rev. Enoch S. BROWN, a prominent Christian minister. He was graduated at the Princeton, Ky., college, and for a number of years taught school. He served four years as sheriff and six years as circuit clerk of Christian county, and was elected representative last year. He was considered the finest orator in the House. Surnames: Croft, Gillum Classification: Biography Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/mAB.2ACE/2623 Message Board Post: Moscow M. Croft Our subject was born in Christian county, Kentucky, July 20th, 1846, and has one brother, and one sister. His father was a farmer, and his early days were spent in the duties incidental to ordinary farm life. At the age of fourteen years he began driving a team, hauling tobacco to Frostburg, on the Green River, Clarksville and Eddyville on the Cumberland. As no railroad facilities then existed, hauling was a good business, and for the interest of our readers, we subjoin the rates of that day. He would take a hogshead of tobacco to Frostburg for $25, or, if the owner could secure him a "backload," would take it for $15. Backloads would pay from $10 to $20. He would deliver tobacco in Clarksville or Eddyville in the winter season for $30 per hogshead. The freight rate from Henderson was $1.00 per hundred pounds, and many time has he hauled coal from the vicinity of Empire to points twenty miles beyond Hopkinsville, and get sixty cents per bushel. The advent of the railroad soon put a quietus to hauling, and he forsook that calling and learned blacksmithing. In July, 1867, he married Miss Sarah E. GILLUM. To them four children have been born, three girls and one boy. Of these the son and one daughter are now living. Shortly after marriage, he settled in Crabtree, where he lived for three years, then he moved to St. Charles in 1874. Here he worked in the mines for two years, and then resumed his trade, working for the St. Bernard Coal Company until 1879. He came to Earlington and worked in the No. 9 shop about a year, when he was transferred to the No. 11 shop, where he still remains. His skill and competency in his trade goes without saying. In many respects, Mr. CROFT is a remarkable man. He was never drunk in his life, though he has always been accustomed to take a dram, never was arrested, never paid a fine, never had a lawsuit, never sat as a juror, never saw inside of a grand jury room, never had a personal difficulty, never made a bet, never played a card, nor never lived a week outside the state. Mr. CROFT is not a member of any church but rather inclines to the Christian denomination. He was for several years an Odd fellow, but has severed his connection with that fraternity. He is a member of the Golden Cross and holds membership in another society. When viewed politically, Mr. CROFT looms up as a Republican of the first magnitude, and believes with all his soul, mind and strength in a single standard, and claims that Uncle Sam should assume paternity to every dollar in the United States. He laughs to scorn the free silver theory, and while he is not an educated man, he reads a vast deal, and draws his own conclusions, and acts according to his own preconceived ideas of right and wrong. BRASHER at the advanced age of ninety years. Mrs. BRASHER was born in South Carolina in 1806. Her maiden name was ARMSTRONG. She came to Kentucky in 1808 in an ox wagon and saw many Indians in her early days. She settled in Christian County, where she married, and raised four children, two girls and two boys. Her memory was good and she retained her faculties to a remarkable degree. Until about a year since, she devoted a great deal of her time to reading, of which she was very fond. She delighted in talking of early times and pioneer life; her grandfather, of whom she often spoke was captured and tortured to death by the Indians. She had for many years been a member of the Universalian Church and died in that faith. She was buried in the cemetery here, followed to the last resting place by a large crowd of relatives and friends. U.S. Military Records Research Outline RECORDS AT THE FAMILY HISTORY LIBRARY -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah, has thousands of microfilms of United States military records from the National Archives. Most of the library’s records have been obtained through an extensive and ongoing acquisition program. This includes indexes to service records, service and pension files, enlistment registers, bounty land warrants, prisoner of war records, soldier home records. The Family History Library’s major collections of United States military records are described in this outline under the war headings. Most records are for the Revolutionary War through World War I. The library has few records for more recent wars. The state research outlines describe major collections or sources of military records for individual states. If you find an ancestor listed in one of the National Archives military indexes and the Family History Library does not have the original record, you will usually need to contact the archive for a copy, as explained above. The following set of books describes the contents, availability, and microfilm numbers of some of the federal military records on microfilm at the Family History Library: Deputy, Marilyn Jane, comp. Register of Federal United States Military Records: A Guide to Manuscript Sources Available at the Genealogical Library in Salt Lake City and the National Archives in Washington, D.C., 3 vols. Bowie, Md.: Heritage Books, 1986. (FHL book 973 M2de; fiche 6087927, vol. 1; fiche 6087930–31, vols. 2–3; computer number 405846.) Nelson, Ken, and Marva Blalock, comps. Register of Federal United States Military Records. Vol. 4, supplemental. Rev. ed. Salt Lake City: Family History Library, 1989. (FHL register, U.S./Canada reference areas.) This is a supplement to the above set of volumes. The Family History Library Catalog. The best way to find records in the Family History Library’s collection is using the Family History Library Catalog. The catalog describes each of the library’s records and provides the call numbers. Microfiche copies of the catalog are at the Family History Library and at each Family History Center. You can also use the catalog on FamilySearch™ computers at the library, most Family History Centers, and some public libraries. This outline provides the book, microfilm (if the microfilms are in a single numerical series), and microfiche call numbers for sources found at the Family History Library. The total number of microfilms is given if the numbers are nonsequential. The initials FHL precede the library call number. To find the film numbers for large sets of records, you will need to use the catalog to get specific film numbers for a surname or military unit. On the compact disc version of the Family History Library Catalog, you can use either film number or computer number searches to find a record quickly. The computer numbers in this outline are preceded by the designation computer number. You can easily find National Archives sources in the Family History Library Catalog by knowing the microfilm publication number. Look in the Author/Title section of the microfiche catalog under National Archives Microfilm Publications. The publications are listed sequentially by the “M” and “T” numbers. You can also do a locality search using the Family History Library catalog. Most large sets of microfilmed records mentioned in this outline are found under: UNITED STATES - MILITARY RECORDS - [WAR] The wars are arranged chronologically. The catalog lists the Revolutionary War as “Revolution,” the Mexican War as “War with Mexico,” and the Spanish-American War as “War of 1898.” Other variations found in the catalog include: UNITED STATES - HISTORY - [WAR] UNITED STATES - MILITARY RECORDS UNITED STATES - MILITARY HISTORY - [WAR] UNITED STATES - MILITARY RECORDS - [WAR] - PENSIONS UNITED STATES - MILITARY RECORDS - INDEXES UNITED STATES - PENSION RECORDS UNITED STATES, SOUTHERN STATES - MILITARY RECORDS - CIVIL WAR, 1861-1865 [STATE] - MILITARY RECORDS - [WAR] [STATE] - [COUNTY] - MILITARY RECORDS "Have A Beautiful Day" Connie *In Beautiful Western Kentucky* ¤ø,¸_¸,ø¤°`°¤ø,¸_¸,ø¤°°¤ø,¸_¸,ø¤°`°¤ø Connie's Links http://www.angelfire.com/ky2/connie/Links.html ¤ø,¸_¸,ø¤°`°¤ø,¸_¸,ø¤°°¤ø,¸_¸,ø¤°`°¤ø (\o/) How far that little candle throws his beams! /_\ So shines a good deed in a weary world. ~William Shakespeare~

Welcome to the Department of Veteran's Affairs National Cemetery Administration's Web Site, designed to assist you with information on VA's national cemeteries and other burial benefits. Veterans Benefits and Services http://www.cem.va.gov/ National Cemetery Locator Most of the 120 Department of Veterans Affairs' national cemeteries may be searched for burial locations. There are six cemeteries that have not completed their records. They include: Long Island; Los Angeles; Ft. Rosecrans; Golden Gate; San Francisco; and the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. Some interments, therefore, will not be listed. Arlington National Cemetery records are also available for interments that occurred after 1999. As more records are added to the database, more burial information will become available. Some state veterans cemeteries can also be searched. http://gravelocator.cem.va.gov/j2ee/servlet/NGL_v1 "Have A Beautiful Day" Connie *In Beautiful Western Kentucky* ¤ø,¸_¸,ø¤°`°¤ø,¸_¸,ø¤°°¤ø,¸_¸,ø¤°`°¤ø Connie's Links http://www.angelfire.com/ky2/connie/Links.html ¤ø,¸_¸,ø¤°`°¤ø,¸_¸,ø¤°°¤ø,¸_¸,ø¤°`°¤ø (\o/) How far that little candle throws his beams! /_\ So shines a good deed in a weary world. ~William Shakespeare~

Hi! If you get this twice, you must be on both Hopkins & Christian County list. I am sending to both, as I know someone on one of the two lists uses the Ky Historical Society. Just can't remember which list, so I sent to both. I was wondering if anyone on this list has gone to the Ky Hist. Soc to get death certificates? I am planning a trip there in two weeks and would like to know if the death certificates are arranged by county or otherwise? I need to find out so I know how to sort my spreadsheet. Any helpful advice? Also, which day would be the best to go there? I need to go on a day when there isn't major crowds, I have lots to do. Any help much appreciated! Karen
I have two children for this couple. Charley and Maude. Were there more?
