W Churches of Casey County W Mt.Calvary Baptist Church The Middlesburg Baptist Church was the mother of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church. Two Spirits filled the Baptist evangelists, John Sallee and Thos. Coleman [not related to the Casey County Colemans] came to Calvary Ridge and held a revival in the old log school house about 1873.It was attended largely and remembered.They kept having church until the weatherboarded church was built in 1912. It was the first church dedicated there. Later two other church houses were built there.A cement block one in 1943 was built by Herbert "Hub" Carman and crew. It got to leaning and in 1958 and 1959 they tore it down to the foundation and built another one. It is the present brick there now. Of course they dedicated each church that was built. Herbert Creech Carman, Hub Carman's son, is a present deacon. The present teachers are: Men, Gary Anderson;Women,Linda Gosser;Young Married, Bro. Gale Durham; Intermediate,Jeff Bastin; Juniors, Twyla Goforth;Primary,Donna Carman;Beginners,Jenna Carman. The Sunday school superintendent is Dwight Black. They have had all-day Sunday gatherings at the church, singing, preaching on the grounds about once a year. Mt. Calvary will celebrate its 125th anniversary with a homecoming on Sunday,Sept.13. The pastors have been,E.L. Carman, Joe Echenroth, Duane Smallwood, A.G. Coker, Rev. Comstock. K.G. Martin, Melvin Minitor, Rev. Witt, George Lay, Hershel Luttrell, Lester Phelps, Robert Lanham, George Brown, Ralph Boots, Lonnie Hayes, T.M. Browning, Gerney York, George Anderson, Leonard Williams, Shirley H. Carman, Wayne Stephens, and Robert Bullock. Gale Durham is the present pastor.
