In the September 12, 1968 edition of the Casey County News, this picture appeared with the following caption: "Way back yonder in 1931 Liberty had a pretty good 8th grade basketball team which was duly photographed for posterity. Posterity has arrived. Presented here from the left are: Paul Wesley, Coy Zachary, Dan Rich, Louis Combest, Aubrey Wesley, Bud Carigan. Paul Wesley is part owner of Wesley Drug Store in Liberty; Coy Zachary is a district soil conservation public relations man in Mississippi; Dan Rich owns Hopkins Drug Store at Carlisle; Louis Combest is an attorney working for the City of Toledo, Ohio; Aubrey Wesley is county health officer in Casey; and Bud Carigan is Col. Bud Carigan, retired, and for the last two years instructor of English at the University of Utah after having estabished a name for himself as a writer while still in service. All of which would not be bad for any quintet of 8th graders in anybody's class." This news clip came from the collections of Gertrude Cundiff Carigan, who was the mother of Col. William E. "Bud" Carigan, Jr. I am the nephew of Bud. I would appreciate hearing from anyone on the list who can fill in more about the young men in this photo. BTW, there is an error; Professor Carigan taught at Utah State in Logan, UT, not the U. of Utah. His second novel, Staves for Louisville, published after this news item, was a historical work set in Casey County in the Depression years.
