    3. I thought this article may be of interest to someone and there are pictures of the gentlemen in this news article. Four honorees added to Hall of Fame The second awards ceremony for Hall of Fame inductees was the highlight of the 11th reunion of the Casey County Alumni Association/Friends of Casey County at Lure Lodge on May 17. To be eligilable to the Hall of Fame, persons had to have met one or more of the following; demonstrated out-standing success in acadimics,athletics or leadership while enrolled in a high school in Casey County or after graduation; demonstrated a recognizable degree of proficiency in civic leadership,buisness or professional accomplishments;and/or made an outstanding contribution to the students and staff of a high school in Casey County as a teacher,coach,administer or supportive member of the community. Potraits of these and all Hall of Fame inductees who have brought honor to Casey County will hang in the hallway of Casey County High School. This year's four honorees were: Patrick H Carigan was U.S.Navy veteran of World War II. As a UK graduate in civil engineering he has held many responsible positions around the world. When he retired after 34 years of federal service, he held the Chief,Construction-Operations for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Ohio River Division. His area of responibility included parts of 14 states and 2,800 miles of navigation channels.Perhaps the most unique project done under his supervision was the rehabilitation of Wolf Creek Dam when it started leaking in the 1970's. At retirement he carried a civilian grade equivalent in rank to a Brigadier General in the Army. Pat was a founder of Friends of Casey County and served as president three times. Dr. Vulus Raymond Dowell, Jr. [deceased],graduated from Liberty High School in 1945.World War II was raging and he entered the Army on his 18th birthday,serving as a surgical technician. First hand experience stimulated him to enter the field of clinical and public health micobiology.Dr. Dowell,leader in the field of anaerobic bacteriology,was recognized internationally.One week before his death in 1990, he retired as head of the Anaerobic Bacteriology Department at the National Center for Disease Control in Atlanta, Ga. His pioneering discoveries and techniques have advanced health care around the world. William M Watkins [deceased], maintained a high academic standing in high school while playing baseball. He attended Western Kentucky University, the University of Kentucky, and graduated from East-ern Kentucky University, where his portrait hangs in their Hall of Fame. As an advocate of education,he was a teacher,high school principal and for 24 years the Casey County Superintendent of Schools.He was an editorial writer for the Courier-Journal,advocating better schools, better trained teachers and higher teacher's salaries. He was a featured writer for the Green River Sprite. In 1939 he published "The Men,Women,Events,Institutions and Lore of Casey County", which contained histories of most schools,communities and families in Casey Co. Charles E. Wesley [deceased], graduated from school in 1929.He attneded Lindsey Wilson Colege,Central College and graduated from Western Kentucky University.As an advocate of eduaction,he taught in one-and-two-room schools,was Liberty High sCHOOL mathematics teacher,vice principal and principal. As Casey County Schools Superintendent,after World War II, he introduced free public school bus transportation and built five consolidated elementary schools that replaced the many one - two-room schools.
