Thank you, Dorothy, for taking the time to list these names for me! I greatly appreciate it. I don't know if any of those folks are my Porters or not, sadly. I can't seem to find any sure connection between my grandmother, Alice Herndon PORTER (b. 1888), and anyone before her. I have word from living relatives that her parents were John January PORTER and Dolly CARPENTER, but I can't seem to find any records of them (so far). I wonder if one of the two families who have Johns in them might be the one I"m looking for.... However, both Johns would be rather old to be starting a family in 1888. Perhaps one of these families is the next generation back?? I will have to keep searching. Anyway, you've given me a fresh start!
