    1. [KYCASEY-L] Tips for reading the Casey Co., KY gedcom into your program.
    2. Tom Land
    3. Regarding the Casey Co., KY gedcom project - Thought I would pass on a couple of tips from hard learned lessons after several years of doing computer genealogy work. 1. Larry, You might want to ZIP the file before sending. That will make it smaller and most folks can use ZIP now a days. 2. I create a new folder for the gedcom so I will know where it is. If it is zipped I unzip it into the same folder and when I read it into my program I tell the program to store the files in that same folder. That way if I want to wipe it out it is easy to do so. 3. DO NOT read the gedcom into your existing database. This may cause many duplications and create lots of problems. The first time I read in a couple hundred duplications I learned this lesson! 4. When someone sends me a gedcom I create a new database with the name fo the person who sent it or something descriptive. Then I read the new file into it. that lets me check it out and if there are portions I want to add to my main database I can create a new gedcom of the section I want to add, not the whole thing. 5. Remember the gedcom is just a text file arranged in a special order. You can edit the beginning and end to wipe out special formatting characters if it won't read into your program the first time. Don't use a word processor. Use the basic text editor to do this, a word processor will add characters. If it won't file with the .ged extension let it save it however it will then go into your folder and change the name of the file there to "whatever.ged".
