Pg 10 Liberty Church of Christ The Liberty Church of Christ began at Walnut Hill. Herbert and Ethel Russell gave land for a building site. The church eventually considered a different location to reach a greater number of souls.Liberty was chosen as some of the members lived there. By unanimous consent, they agreed to buy a lot on Liberty Bypass. Two lots were purchased from Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Sharp. The buildong at Walnut Hill was sold, the cost going as a down payment on the two lots. Money was borrowed from the Casey County Bank to finance the cost. Construction started on the building in 1958, and they were out of debt by 1965. The carpentry work was done by Herbert Carman of Calvary Ridge. Church members did as much of the work as possible.Paul Carmicle did the brick laying,Gilbert Russell did the electrical and plumbing work,Elbie Tarter did the painting, and the ladies did their part. Rosie Blevins,Gladys Carpenter and Ethel Russell made the baptismal garments. Herbert and Ethel bought a table at an antique store for a communion table. Ethel bought a communion tray and crocheted a large, lacy doily for it. Rosie Blevins furnished a beautiful clock. Three coats of gym finish were put on the floor. Seats were bought from a furniture store in London Ky. When the church moved the three miles to Liberty,Herbert Russell was forced to cancel his radio program at Columbia WAIN Radio Station, to devote his time and finances to the Lord's work at Liberty. Elbie Tarter and Herbert Russell were the elders of the Church of Christ at Liberty, as they had been at Walnut Hill. The first worship service was held in the new building March 1,1959, with Kelly Ellis of Danville the speaker, followed by a week's meeting. Preachers who later held revivals were Alvin Holt, Bill Bass, James F. Thomas, Carman Watson, Orville Brooks, Carney Morgan, Rea Pennock, Carlos Tarter, J.D. McDonald,Lloyd Russell, Zenas Eubank, Danny Grider, Mark Eubank, V.W. Boland, Sam Dick and Harry Cobb. The elders preached three sermons a week, twice on Sunday, at 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday night; did the work of elders and supervised the flock. The church grew and prospered in the Lord. They helped to sponor J.D. McDonald's WKDO radio program for many years and the church continues to do so. Sunday morning attendance ranges from 17-38. Those who teach on Sunday are Kenny Spaw, Bud Cain, or George Stidham. Dewey Todd from Pulaski County preaches once a month. Of those who launched out joyfully to build the church in Liberty in 1958, only three charter members remain today. They are Martha Tarter, Gladys Carpenter and Donie Russell.
