    1. [KYCASEY-L] Belton Notes
    2. Pat Brooks
    3. For someone who might be interested: Verbal memories of Lorene Murphy Noel Clarence Belton's father was Atterson Belton. Atterson Belton had a store across the Gum Lick Creek and Road from where the old church was located. That is where the town of Atterson got it's name. Later, Atterson was moved up the creek to where it crossed the creek. (the remains of a few buildings are still there). Atterson had a grist mill, two stores, a post office, and a saw mill. Clarence Belton had a son named Vitus and daughters named Vatus and Ada. They are all buried at Gum Lick Cemetery except for Vatus. Vitus Belton's daughter is Juanita Belton Wethington who now lives on Ky Hwy 1859 in Liberty. Clarence Belton married Lula Wethington, Vitus married Elsie Heistand. Elsie was Thornton Heistands daughter. Thornton Heistand's wife was Lottie (Charlotte) Wethington. Abner Belton married Amanda (Mandy ) Woodrum. They had a boy named Edgar and they called him Buck. He died in France during WWI of pneumonia. They also had a daugter Myrtie. Myrtie Belton married Conrad Belton the son of Oscar Belton. They also had a son named Sherman who married Alice Wethington, and a son John who married Mae Earls. Clarence Belton and Oscar Belton were brothers. They also had a sister named Sarah who married Robert Earls. It was Robert Earls that donated the land for the old Gum Lick Church which was a Union church. Oscar and his wife Nannie Overstreet had children: Conrad, Leila, Pauline who married B.H. Crowe, and Gene (Eugene) and anothr girl named Lottie. Pauline and B.H. Crowe donated the land for the Gum Lick Christian Church. Oscar and Nannie's house is still standing it is up on a bank near the Gum Lick Church. Oscar was called "Mr Boy Belton" by most everyone that new him. Abner Belton's home was on what is now Abner Hill road, just a turn off up the hill over Gum Lick Road. The home is still standing and is where Rose and Jim Peyton now live. The barn that stands behind the house is really a neat old English style barn. Very unusual looking for this area. Under the layers of siding on the house, I believe it is still an old cabin. There was another Belton, Quimnton Belton who had a farm on Chicken Gizzard Rd now Hwy 1859. This is the next road over from Gum Lick Road and is connected by the Abner Hill Rd. Quinton Belton at one time owned the farm, part of which is now owned by Bennie Noel. Abner Belton owned one of the first cars in this part of the country. They all attended Gum Lick Church and he was a leader in the church. "He did not like Sunday School being called Sunday School". They are both buried in the Gum Lick Cemetery which was at one time called the Belton Cemetery. The old school (Gum Lick School) was just up the hollow in front of the old church. The new school built in 1941 is still standing, located on Gum Lick Road near where Sherman Belton's house Stood. His old house burned about six years ago. It was on the corner of Gum Lick and Abner Hill Road.
