Debbie: Thank you very much for all the time and effort you put into posting Artie's Diary. I have passed them around to my family, and we have enjoyed them tremendously. Lot's of special memories were brought back up for us and it was both interesting and special to share in a part of your family history. I think Winnie and Sweetie were the same gal. Art speaks of Sweetie being ill---and going to see her. She then says that she got Winnie back in the eve. Was Fin married before and possibly had a child that was staying with him---or one of his relative's child. Could Sweetie be a granddaughter of Fin? Sorry, I forget how old Fin and Art were at times. My mother and her sisters talked about "farm depression". One of my aunts was sent to live with her aunt at a very young age. My Great Aunt Stacy could not have children. My Aunt Effie stayed with her off and on for years. Great Aunt Stacy and her husband also took in other children from time to time. Aunt Effie would relate stories that one minute Great Aunt Stacy would be very chipper and happy. When Effie had to go back home, Stacy became very depressed. Aunt Stacy also took in one of her nephews when Aunt Stacy had to leave. She hated to be alone. Uncle George owned a large farm in IL and was always in the field or doing some sort of farm work. According to my mother, this was a common malady among women back then. Art apparently did not like to be alone. Just reading about her company and how much she enjoyed having them, says a lot. Shari

Greetings- I am researching my family tree lines of Yocum and Reed. From my basic research, most of the family lived in Casey County. I live in California, and it is hard to do research here for Kentucky. I am looking for information that links the following ancestors: * Henry Yocum b. 1753 Mercer, Virginia - d. December 1816 Casey County, Kentucky * Eleanore Yocum (Henry's daughter) b. abt. 1775 Mercer County, Kentucky- d. 26 December 1815 married to Benjamin A Reed (1772-1810) 3 April 1792 Lincoln County, Kentucky * David Reed (Eleanore and Benjamin's son) b. 1801 Garrard County, Kentucky - d. abt. 1871 Casey County, Kentucky married to Pauline Ellis 11 January 1821 in Casey County, Kentucky * David Reed (David and Paulin's son) b. 1 March 1835 Casey County, Kentucky - d. 20 April 1919 married to Ann Burns 10 Feb. 1858 in Casey County, Kentucky * Stephen H. Reed (David and Ann's son) b. 26 December 1859 in Kentucky - d. 5 October 1886 married to Amanda Ellis 13 March 1877 in Casey County, Kentucky * Hugh Van Winkle Reed (Stephen and Amanda's son) b. 11 October 1879 in Casey County marred to Mary Lee Wash I you all have any information proving the links between these family members or information about the Yocum or Reed families, I would be interested in hearing from you! Thank you in advance for any information or advice that you can give. Sarah Ziker
Hi Barbara, Ditto on all that stuff. My grandmother was the sweetest person I've ever met. She worked so hard and never complained. She lost two first children and one son later when the baby was one week old. The little boy younger than Dad died of just a simple scratch on his leg. He was 3 and I didn't know any of this till Dad told me when I was about 55. One of my Aunts made us 3 girls a new dress in one day and we had our pictures made in them. I don't think she even had a pattern. We left for Michigan the next day. Yep, lots of wonderful Memories. Judy
My grandmother had a glass butter churn. I use to beg to turn the handle. It looked like fun. Foolish me! I gave up after about 7 turns, The lady across the road had a wooden churn. She use to set on her porch and churn. And yes! I remember shelling peas. That looked like fun too until I had to do it. I can remember getting as far from the back yard as possible when my grandmother made lye soap. My brothers and I never came home for lunch. We had tomato's in the garden and apples in the orchard to fill our bellies and a creek out back to wash the juice off. Aw! Sweet memories. Barbara

I had forgotten that ladies use to do their washing in Monday and ironing on Tues. Does anyone remember what was done on the rest of the week? I think baking was one. I notice that Artie writes Warsh for Wash. In recent years, my son makes fun of me for saying WARSH not WAASH. My grandparents were from midwest and they raised me. Guess that's where I got it. I have my husband's maternal grandmother's diary from the 40's also. This woman was always doing something. Mostly she sewed and crocheted. Like my own grandmother, she was never still. Barbara
