I am so sorry, her name is Shirley "Sweetie" Smith.
Hello, Here is a story about Jonathan Hooker and his bride Scarlett, who died in the plane crash yesterday in Lexington. There is a mention of a Shitley "Sweetie" Smith who was a friend of the bride's family, and she lives in London, Ky, and I wondered if she could possibly be the Sweetie in Artie's diaries. _http://www.topix.http://www.thttp://www.topixhttp://www.topixhttp://www.t_ (http://www.topix.net/content/kri/0071564701366382801128717453680182828577) This was such a terrible tragedy. How many of us are going to start jotting down the events of our daily lives in a diary? With the things going on from one end of the globe to the other, it should be interesting reading in 100 years or so. Shari
I hated to see them end, too. Judy
Hi Deb, being from Casey Co ,I have enjoyed reading Artie's diaries so much and was sorry to see them end. They brought back a lot of memories and I was lots of people whose names I recognized. Thanks so much for sharing them and all the time you spent doing so. Mona
Deb: I have a group picture of my grandmother and some classmates at the Gum Lick school, but I will have to find it. When I do I will scan it. Barb Farris McCormick
I have so enjoyed reading these diaries, I haven't found any relatives except maybe Mrs Les Sanders. Maybe the Wethington she mentioned today, but that is something I would have to inquire on. I'm so sorry you don't have the rest of them, I'm sure she still wrote on her everyday life. And she lived a very long time. Thank you so much: Barbara Farris McCormick
Thanks, Deb, for sharing Art's diary. It was fun to read and to learn "personally" about their every day lives. I noticed that she wrote quite often about my great-grandfather and step-grandmother, Coy and Annie Davis in the early entries, but towards the end, not a word about them. Coy and Annie lived til 1982 and 1987 - makes me wonder if they had "words" or just got busy with other friends as we all do from time to time. Thanks again! Sheree
Hi Kathy, My grandfather also grew up in Gilpin, KY, as well as many other relatives. Which family lines are you researching? Perhaps we have some ancestors in common. Sheree
My son lives in Liberty and his wife bought a book at the library that has old schools and pictures of teachers and students. I found my grandmother's brothers pictures from 1911-1914 in it. I believe it is titled A History of Casey County. Norma
Deb, I just wanted to tell you how much I have enjoyed all these articles and will reallymiss reading them daily. They did take me back in time. Thank you so much for using your time to post them to the list. Norma
Deb, I, too, wish to add my thanks for putting Art's diary on the mailing list. I hope we will learn who Sweetie was. She must have been a very special child in the lives of Art and Fin. Shari
Debbie. I also am enjoying the diary. I have also wondered if there were any pictures of all the schools of Casey Co. Ky. My husbands father always said he went to school # 5 He was born in Gilpin Ky. When he was getting his social security he had to have his aunt say how old he was and how long he new him etc. because his birth certificate was lost. I was just wondering if there were any pictures of that school or any info on all the children that went to that school. Thanks again for the diary it has been a real enjoyment and very infornative. I was also wondering if there were any books on the midwives of Casey Co. Ky. Kathy --------------------------------- Get your email and more, right on the new Yahoo.com
In a message dated 8/24/2006 6:40:06 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, sharuck@charter.net writes: I think Winnie and Sweetie were the same gal. Art speaks of Sweetie being ill---and going to see her. She then says that she got Winnie back in the eve. Was Fin married before and possibly had a child that was staying with him---or one of his relative's child. Could Sweetie be a granddaughter of Fin? Sorry, I forget how old Fin and Art were at times. My mother and her sisters talked about "farm depression". One of my aunts was sent to live with her aunt at a very young age. My Great Aunt Stacy could not have children. My Aunt Effie stayed with her off and on for years. Great Aunt Stacy and her husband also took in other children from time to time. Aunt Effie would relate stories that one minute Great Aunt Stacy would be very chipper and happy. When Effie had to go back home, Stacy became very depressed. Aunt Stacy also took in one of her nephews when Aunt Stacy had to leave. She hated to be alone. Uncle George owned a large farm in IL and was always in the field or doing some sort of farm work. According to my mother, this was a common malady among women back then. Art apparently did not like to be alone. Just reading about her company and how much she enjoyed having them, says a lot. Shari Shari, I was thinking about my own family when I read the diaries and things were so different when I was growing up. My mother had a big family and we would travel to Kentucky and Michigan and Indiana and Illinois to see them from Lima, Ohio. When we all lived close, then we would visit each other almost every day. It was so different back then and families were so close. I think that families today are close too, but we have so much going on with both parents working and the children having school activities and homework. Also, we seem to be more selfish today than people were years ago. Today most people would not just drop in and visit a relative and years ago they would and we were happy to have the company. I miss those days. Today we have to call to make sure they are going to be home and it is so hard to plan anything because of the hectic schedules that we have. Charlotte Miller
Debbie, Thank you so much for sharing her diaries with us. I hope that you can find the rest of them someday. She sure had a busy and fulfilling life and it makes ours look bland compared to hers. All the hard work she did and you could tell that they had much love between them. Thank you, Charlotte Miller
Thanks for all the response about the Diary ....I am so glad that they were enjoyed by so many....Now I am on another train of thought...........I am trying to find a picture of Dogwood Gap School or maybe it was called Shucks Creek.......(guess I should ask my Mom) also Maybe the kind of pictures that show all the kids taken together. In the books of Casey County I have never seen any of this area of the County and I am sure there had to have been some.........Thought that I would ask Thanks Debbie Lee Cooper Indiana
Deb - I have a few pictures of that sort, but am not sure which schools they are. I'll dig them out and let you know. Jackie
Thanks for sharing the diaries with us, Deb. Know it was hard work, but it was so much fun to read and it got things stirred up on this list again. Jackie
Thank you so much for sharing them with us!! I was just musing with someone offline on how I dreaded reading an entry where one of the principal "cast" had died or heaven forefend, it end where you said she had died. I've enjoyed this a lot!! Candace Rose
