I'm looking for the answer to two questions regarding the email below: 1. Does anyone know about a Casey Co. location called "Neeley/Neely Gap"? 2. Does Nov. 4, 1862 have any significance in the civil War history of Casey Co.? Read the whole email below and thanks for any help given! A researcher wrote; I have a wonderful old walking stick which has been in my family for many years. It is inscribed with date "Sour Wood Cut at Neeley Gap Casey County KY Nov 4, 1862". My Grandfather had it for as long as I can remember. He died in 1972 in West Texas and I have had it since. I never asked him the story behind it and how it came into his possession. Alas. I think there were some major Civil War happenings in your area at the time, but this stick may be unrelated to the war. Is there still a Neeley Gap? Combest. two of the Henderson boys married two of the Combest girls. From what I understand , they ran away together and then probably married. The first Brackett's to settle in Casey County were Gale and Cathrine (Powell) Brackett. both were born in Bell County, Ky. Gale from Stinking Creek and Cathrine from Four Mile. Gale was the son of John and Easter (Gamble/Gambrell) Brackett. John and Easter are burried in the back right corner of the Singleton Cemetery just north of Eubank, Ky. They had three sons ; Thomas- married Lucy powell, sister to Cathrine.,Gale and Abraham Lincoln(Linc). Gale and Cathrine had eleven children; Lloyd,Elsie,Speed Farmer,Maude,Amanda Otis ,Lee, Earl ,Molly,Garner and Paul. Thomas' family settled in Lincoln then Garrard County. Lincoln went Indinapolis, In. both of them had large families from what I understand. There were four or five girls in the John brackett clan; Sally-married a Epperson in Pulaski,Co.,Amanda and two or three others that I can't remember.If I could find the information I have about this I could give you birth and probably death dates. In having a sign painted I added Wilhelm out of respect for some of the Wilhelm family. My great-great grandpa Henry A. Matherly has the big homemade stone mad by his son Israel Sanford Matherly.Henry was married (I think)four times. Two of his wives are burried on eighter side of him. One was a Ross and the other a Wickersham.My great grandpa Israel Sanford Matherly isburried at the foot of his dad Henry. Sanford has a monument. There are (I think) six Wilhelms burried on the left side of the cemetery. They only have field rocks for markers. James Wilhelm, just down the road from the cemetery may help you with his family. The land was donated to the Southern Baptist Church and Cemetery by Henry A. Matherly. A church was never built so my great grandma Narcissus Casey Matherly deeded it to the Casey County Board of Education for the Chestnut Level School.Hope this helps.....Keith
