    3. Not for sure who is in need of CHISM, don't even know if it is a surname or given name you're hunting. But from Casey County marriages there were two grooms listed from there, the numbers at the end stand for book and page number. As both of these are from book one all it would give is who married the couple. 1. [KYCASEY-L] Caney Fork Baptist Church by Ada Delk Edwards
    2. dorothy vaughn
    3. This is copied from The History of Casey Counry Churches 1798 - 1985 by Paul Patton. I made a copy of the Caney Fork Church only , maybe this may be of interest to someone. Caney Fork Baptist Church by Ada Delk Edwards In 1904,C.P. Brown and his wife Mary made a deed to W.T. Wilson, J.T. Wilson and J.J. Long as Trustees of the Caney Fork Baptist Church. The sum was of $1 and for the further consideration of assisting the neighborhood in the erection of a church for the use of the Baptists, the Methodists, the Christians, and the United Brethren. The parcel of land described in the deed of conveyance was diagonally across the road from the Caney Fork Cemetery and contained 1/2 acre. The deed, dated Sept.10, 1904 and filed Aug.28,1906 is recorded in deed book 26,page 620. Prior to this there was a log building which served as a school and a church located to the John B. and Sallie Edwards farm which is presently owned by Pallas Wesley. The seats in the building were made of spilt logs. The first building on the land obtained from G.P. and Mary Brown was built by the community and served, as the deed provided, as a community church. This building was used for about 20 years. When the congreation decided to replace this building, Mr. Bud Cochran was hired to be the chief carpenter and to oversee the construction of the building. Members of the church and neighbors donated labor and materials. During the construction of this building, a brush arbor was built and hundreds of people came to the revival which was held. Seats from the old church were used along along with boards placed on blocks of wood to accommodate the crowds. Horses and buggies filled the wooded area. Aunt Sallie Atwood lived about four miles from from the arbor and being 80 years old,she drove her horse and buggy beside the arbor every night to hear singing and preaching. The brush arbor was used for Sunday services as well as the revival while the church was under construction. John T. Brown, a Separate Baptist preacher and a member of Caney Fork Church was the leading spirit of the church throughout his life. He was superintendent of Sunday School and song leader for many years. In later years, Bro.Brown's grandson, Cleavie Edwards served for a number of years as song leader, teacher and superintendent. Through the years of it's existence the church was served by the following minsters: J.P. Campbell, Tom Zachery, Bro. Toms, J.T.Brown, W.H.Patton, N.T.Patton, Tom Lawhorn, ArvilOverstreet, John Caudill, Elmer Stevens, Dave Sharp, Jim Brown, Tom Atwood, Arvil Allen, Clell Warren. Harry Franklin and Oris Bailey. For years there was a strong Sunday School with large attendance, Among the teachers were Hazel Brown and Theda Phillips. Music was always an important feature of worship. During the ministry of W.H.Patton there was a large youth choir who would ding choruses during every service, especially at the revivals. The C.A. Langford family well known gospel singers, were a part of the Caney Fork congreation. There were many outstanding revivals. Some of the best remembered by W.H. Patton,N.T. Patton, Harry Franklin and a Bro.Maddox. In later years interest in the Caney Fork Church began to wane and people drifted to other congrations. Regular services ceased to be held during the 1950's. The building fell into a sad state of repair. The last funeral conducted in the old church was that of Vertie C. Edwards in July 1961 with Bro. Wilmer Ellis officiating. Sometime around 1965, Bro.W.H. Patton and a group from the West Side Christian Church in Liberty came to Caney Fork and held a few services on Sunday afternoon but there was not sufficient interest in the community to reorganize either the Sunday School or church. These were the last services to be held at Caney Fork. *- J.T.[John Thomas] Brown is the Father of Sallie Brown Edwards wife/of John B Edwards ,his grandson Clevie Edwards/son of John B & Sallie Edwards and Vertie C Edwards wife/of Cleavie Edwards. The Brown and Edwards families are my husband, Marshall Vaughn's family.

    1. [KYCASEY-L] Evan Thomas, Casey County after 1850
    2. ELLWYN WORLEY
    3. Annette Smiley posted that Evan Thomas of Casey County was her gggrandfather. My grandfather said he was an orphan and said he was reared by Evan Thomas but in 25 years of research I have not found any evidence of either, although both may be true. Negatives are difficult, if not impossible, to prove so it may never be proven that he did not live with Evan Thomas. His name was Charles but may have been called Thomas with a last name of Worley, Sandifer or Ross and was born 24 June 1849, near Liberty. Does anyone have any information to prove or disprove these suppositions? Will love to hear from you. Ellwyn L Worley ELWorley@Worldnet.att.net 828 W Westview St Springfield, MO 65807-4646

    3. Poplar Springs Baptist Church During the growing years of 1916 -1918 the Dry Ridge community was rapidly growing. Families such as the Pittmans, Weddles, Roys, Yadens,Penningtons,Lanes,Gossers,Hastes,Wilsons,Clements,Gilpins and Passmores decided to meet together in groves to worship the Lord. In 1921 , the residents decided to start the building of a Baptist church. Oscar Pittman donated the land for the church to be built on and and also the ground for public buring. The men within the community donated logs and their time to build the one-room, weatherboard building. The bell, which still hangs inside the church, was donated by the Clear Branch Church at Gilpin on KY 501. The church was organizied on Sept.25, 1921, with 16 people. The group called the church Poplar Springs because of a spring close by that was surrounded by poplar trees. In 1954, a new brick church was built to replace the old one that had been badly damaged and torn down due to a storm. An addition of Sunday school rooms and a basement was made in 1972. Just recently, a new addition to the front of the church was completed. The church has a membership of around 200. Some of the later pastors were T.M. Browning, Dan Flannery, Delbert Newsone, George P. Anderson, Shirly Carman and Doug Wesley.C.B. Carman is the current pastor.

    1. [KYCASEY-L] PRICE - PUCKIT - BROWN of Casey Co.?
    2. Margy Miles
    3. Hello; I am looking for the family of my gg grandfather, Henry H. PRICE (1830-1913). I have searched high and low for this family for several years. I believe that he may have had Casey Co. connections. The first record I can find ANYWHERE of him is his marriage record in Pulaski Co., KY in 1858.....he married Margaret ALSIP. He reported at that time that he was a widower, this was his 2nd marriage. He was 28, she 16. I have Henry's death certificate which says his parents were James and Betty P_____. Betty's maiden name is there but almost unreadable. It looks like PUCKIT. Henry's first son was named James. There is an old statement on file in Pulaski Co. by a minister who states that he solemnized rites of matrimony on 13th (18th?) day of Dec., 1850 between Henry Price and Sarah BROWN. I do not know if this is my Henry, but have never found this couple on Pulaski records. Maybe they were in Casey Co. after marrying? Any clues at all will be gratefully accepted and if you have an interest in the Pulaski Co. Prices, some of whom moved on to Mo., I am happy to share what I have with you.
