    3. Hello Everybody, There were many responses to my last posting and some included questions about what gedcoms are. Others wanted to know if they could recieve the gedcom without contributing. I will attempt to answer both questions now. A gedcom is a text file which has a certain order to it which can be used by family tree programs to place peole and events together in a comprehendable way. It can be used to trade info between two different family tree programs. In other words it is the common laungage of family tree programs. Almost all programs use their own format when they are in their native operations but most can import or export the same information as a gedcom. A gedcom can then be combined with your own info without retyping. It is simply(or not so simply) merged with your own file. I am only familar with Family Tree Maker but in it I open my main file normally and then click on open and under that choose as file type gedcom. Then select the gedcom you want and choose append as the method of merging. If you want to save the gedcom as a new independent file such as a Family Tree Maker file, choose save and you will convert the gedcom to a program file which your family tree program can use. Now, lets talk about the people who want the combined file but who have not contributed any info. I think all contributors would want whatever info you have even if it is small. But I will not be selfish because I hope that when you are satisfied with your file you will contribute it in the future. I have noticed in looking at the files that have come in that there is much Casey Co history but also some from Russell Co., Adair Co. Taylor Co. Lincoln Co and Pulaski Co. There will be alot from Va. and NC since many of the Casey forebears were from these places. I hope that this project will help many people and that Casey Co. history can be brought closer together because of it. I grew up in Lanhamtown and attended church at Middleburg Baptist Church. My parents families were generally from the Walnut Hill/Pricetown area and includes surnames such as Witt,Thompson, Allen, Bell, Henson, Minton, Morgan, and many more. Best Wishes, Larry Witt 3271 Hwy. 39 Somerset, Ky. 42503

    2. Thanks. I feel strange that, suddenly after I wrote, I am getting all sorts of postings. Coincidence? I have more names in Casey than any other one county; yet, never see any of them. As a friend said, "I think my family tree was cut up and used for kindling". So, we are e-mailing again. 3. Jenny, Which published Census do you have? Mine is by "Bicentenial Heritage Corporation, 1979". It shows: Family 359 BUTT, Ambrose 67 M Farmer 200 VA Sophia 56 F MD Sophia G. 12 F KY 1 (1= Persons over 20 YOA who cannot read or write) 12 YOA would mean her mother gave birth at 44 and her father was 55. (My dad was born when his mother was 36 and his father 61. There must be something in the Casey County water!) The "1" would imply that she was over 20. The 1841 tombstone would mean she was 9 at the time of the 1850 Census. I've run into this with some of my Census research, too.
